This is a photograph from the 6th annual running of the Meath Spring Half Marathon and 10KM Road Races and Fun Runs which were promoted and hosted by Bohermeen Athletic Club at Bohermeen, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 12th of March 2017 at 11:00. The half marathon consists of a 11KM and 10KM repeated loop around the roads of Bohermeen and Oristown. The 10KM race just completes the 2nd part of the half marathon. The finish line is on the running track within Bohermeen Community Center. The course is a fast fair course with a few small hills. Last year the course was 'reversed' which just meant that the traditional course changed to accomodate the large number of participants and the narrow country roads on which both the race participants and race traffic must both share before, during and after the race. Most runners agreed that this made the course much faster as a result. There was almost a total of 1,000 participants in both races.

The other great variable in road racing - the weather - was dry, clear but rather windy. At several parts of the course there was a stiff headwind which made these sections that bit more difficult. Temperatures were around a seasonal 10C for this time in March in Ireland.

Bohermeen AC is steeped in Irish athletics history since 1927 and it is this experience and exceptional community spirit and volunteering which has made this event today so successful. Having now organised the event for six years running it is certain that the event will continue to grow and expand become one of the mainstays on the Irish athletic club road racing calendar for many years to come.

This race takes place about one month after the Bewley's 10 Mile Road Race in Trim (just down the road from Bohermeen). Indeed these races truly kick-start the whole road racing season of fixtures amongst the clubs in Meath who are now famous for the quality and standard of the road races staged and organised.

The race is supported by substantial local sponsorship from businesses in the local area. McNally Logistics and Transportation are the main sponsors of this year's event. The company specialises in national and international haulage.

Timing and event management was provided by http://www.myrunresults.com/. Their website is here [www.myrunresults.com/] and will contain the results to today's race.

I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

You can download this photographic image here directly to your computer or device. This version is the low resolution web-quality image. How to download will vary slight from device to device and from browser to browser. Have a look for a down-arrow symbol or the link to 'View/Download' all sizes. When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

I would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

An African Oradour...

Barlonyo (also Bar Lonyo, meaning "field of wealth" in Luo) is a village in northern Uganda near Lira town. Here follows the text of the remembrance book for the massacre of 2014, made by residents themselves.

The survivors perform regularly an re-enactment of what happened in their village. The pictures were made in November 2016, at the same time while the International Criminal Court (ICC) was starting the trials of the main suspect of the massacre, former LRA commander Dominic Ongwen.

THIS MEMORY BOOK IS BASED ON DOCUMENTATIONS OF THE MASSACRE CONDUCTED BY THE JUSTICE AND RECONCILIATION PROJECT (JRP), IN ADDITION TO FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSIONS HELD BY COLLABORATIVE TRANSITIONS AFRICA (CTA).

Barlonyo martyr village

Before the War

Since 1986, a civil war has taken place between the Government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Before the war the Langi people of Lira district and the people of Barlonyo made a living by farming and taking care of the livestock.

Barlonyo means “place of wealth”; a piece of land where people can be wealthy with hard work. Previously, life around Barlonyo was characterized by hunting, fishing, traditional dances and storytelling, and the cultivation of crops, small businesses and cattle rearing,

The civil war lead to the creation of displacement camps in Lira and disrupted their way of life.

After a government offensive called “Operation Iron Fist” in late 2002, Lira district became even more insecure. The LRA began attacking civilians in Lira district and as a result, nearby civilians in Lira voluntarily created Barlonyo camp between September and November 2002. Barlonyo is 26 km north of Lira town and sits next to the River Moroto.

In the afternoon of 21 February 2004, over 300 people were murdered in less than three hours and thousands were displaced to neighbouring camps.

This book is to remember and honour the lives of those who were killed and affected by the massacre. It is also meant to recognize how Barlonyo has moved forward after the massacre, and to memorialize their story so the next generation in Barlonyo does not allow such an atrocity to happen again.

Timeline of massacre events:

Times are approximated based on eye-witness testimony

5:00 pm

300 LRA gather in the fields outside of Barlonyo to receive attack instructions from Okot Odhiambo. According to one soldier who participated in the raid, Odhiambo told the LRA soldiers: “I have received order from the high command of the LRA. You are to kill every living Thing. Kill the old people, kill the adults, kill the government soldiers, and abduct all the young children and boys.”

Several civilians spot the rebels and try to alert the camp. The LRA becomes suspicious of the civilians who had run Back to the camp and they started to shoot in their direction. The rebels fired an RPG (Rocket-Propelled Grenade) toward the detach. At this time one person is shot.

5:30 pm

The LRA, headed by 7 fighters, splits into 3 groups. One group attacks the militia detach and sets it on fire. 28 soldiers and some of the family members were in the barracks and all were killed in the attack. The groupe attacking the detach then continues on the main camp.

The camp residents did not realize that the detach was being attacked and were doing activities such as bathing, cooking, drinking and playing cards when the LRA arrived. The other two groups surrounded the main camp and begin massacring civilians and abducting others. There were over 300 LRA rebels with 100 guns, a bomb, two J2s, Ak-47 and clubs and sticks. A small gap of fighters on the western side of the camp allows some civilians, Amuka and LDU to escape. Some hide in the bushes and others run to Ogur.

7:30 pm

After the massacre was over Odhiambo blew his whistle, gathered the rebels under a tree, and tied all of the new abductees to the tree. At least 24 people were kidnapped and taken to carry looted goods or serve in the rank and file of the LRA. They marched their captives, most laden with heavy food stuffs and luggage to the river Moroto (3 km away).

8:30 pm

Several people struggled to cross the deep river and were punished for their caution. One woman spilled millet as she stumbled, and was promptly chopped to death with a panga. Twenty people were killed by the LRA at the River Moroto by smashing their heads and stabbing them with bayonets. The group carries on into Okwang.

By the end of the massacre over 300 residents of Barlonyo were shot, mutilated with pangas, beaten to death with sticks or pierced with bayonets. Many others were burned to death after following instructions to enter their homes. Those who tried to escape were killed. No one was spared and after only three hours, the LRA retreated from the camp.

Remembering the dead:

There is a cement mass grave and memorial statue commemorating the massacre of Barlonyo camp. As seen above, the official government record claims that only 121 were massacred at Barlonyo even though the death toll was over 300 people according to community members and the camp commanders list. The actual number can never be known, as many lost were young children or left no one to account for them.

Every year a prayer ceremony takes place on 21 February to remember the massacre. Representatives from the government attend and the entire community comes together to pray for the massacre victims: “The prayer ceremonies are good because people from other places come together. It makes them know people love them, council them, it makes them normal.”

Some survivors hold on to some of the possessions of los friends and family members as a way of remembering them. For those who did not have their hut burned down, objects such as ID cards, cooking pots, and clothing are a way to remember their lost loved ones.

A group of Barlonyo community members performs dramatic performances about the massacre to both visitors and the people of Barlonyo. The performances are done by a local youth group as a way of bringing people together and coping with the massacre. “It makes them remember what happened here. It helps them with their trauma… It’s not just for the sake of playing but bringing people together.”

As the Barlonyo community moves on after the massacre, men and women are worried about poverty, hunger and sickness in their daily lives. One Barlonyo resident said: “We ne3ed institutions at Barlonyo to remember. Hospitals, security, education, better memorials.”

Not only can institutions serve as a memorial to the massacre, but they can help the Barlonyo community recover from their experiences and flourish in the aftermath of the civil war. The needs described on the next page were based on a series of conversations with the people of Barlonyo.

. Boreholes – we need more water, the stream is dirty

.Children with disabilities needs to be able to go to school

. A better health centre

. “Churches, schools, youth centres”

. Support for the EVI’s remaining in Barlonyo

.Sensitization centers/programs

.Agriculture projects that increase productivity

. “Repair the roads”

.Income generations activities

.Graves were not cemented properly

.We need a fence to protect the memorials

.”A child cannot afford the cost of books.”

.Compensation for the killed should come from the government

.”NGOs and the government should supply these things.”

Today the people of Barlonyo are returning to their ancestral homes. They focus on cultivating their gardens, providing for their families, and educating their children.

Without fulfilling community need, like provision of hospitals and schools, the community will continue to face many challenges. “We want our children to know the impact of the massacre.”

“It is important to remember the past while also looking towards prospects for the future. The Barlonyo community needs to remember their past while having the opportunity top provide for the next generation of Barlonyo. The task before Barlonyo today is to thrive in the villages while giving respect to the loved ones they have lost. Many people explained the importance of memory to them as a way for the children to know their ancestors, as well as a lesson so that a tragedy like Barlonyo never happens again.

It is becoming so that they cannot remember really… We need to remember the massacre and to give it to our children so that they can remember our beloved ancestors.

It is with this spirit of remembrance alongside the need to move forward that characterizes Barlonyo and the aftermath of the massacre today.”

Survivors of the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency in Lira District have appealed to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to hold part of the trials of former Joseph Kony's LRA commander Dominic Ongwen at Barlonyo site where the rebels reportedly massacred 300 people in 2004

“We felt no guilt. On the contrary, we felt proud to be able to contribute to the British war effort. I’m proud of what we did!” ~ Fritz Lustig

During World War II a select group of German generals were held by the British in what must have been, and probably is, the most luxurious POW camp in history. Imagine men who were so arrogant that, in spite of their known brutality, thought that they were being held in comfort and style because of their position. In fact, in letters to home, they often boasted at how stupid the British were.

The generals were allowed to have personal servants, just as they were accustomed to. That ate fine food and were permitted to have wine at dinner. As many as 59 German generals occupied the Trent Park facility during the war.

A welfare officer – almost like a concierge – drove into London once a week to do personal shopping for the generals. His name was Lord Aberfeldy. Colonel Thomas Kendrick, the MI6 overseer of Trent Park amused the generals with occasional garden parties. While their cohorts were wreaking havoc on the European continent and slaughtering millions of Jews, these generals laughed at the inordinate hospitality of the Brits.

It turns out that the joke was on the Germans. MI6 came upon the idea of making the generals comfortable on the principle that, if they were comfortable and properly arranged, they would talk amongst themselves and might possibly reveal secrets that would otherwise have taken hours upon hours of tedious interrogation.

MI6 was right. Trent Park was packed with audio surveillance devices. Fritz Lustig was one of about 100 Germans who were loyal to the British cause who was sitting at a listening station, completely unbeknownst to the generals, transcribing every conversation. Lord Aberfeldy was a pseudonym for an MI6 agent. Colonel Kendrick especially enjoyed the garden parties, never revealing for a moment his fluency in German.

Mr. Lustig, who is now 93 years old and living in London, is one of only a few remaining listeners. Lustig’s family tree was Jewish, so he immigrated to England in April 1939. He knew he would not be Aryan enough to escape Hitler’s Final Solution. Although he had been born in Berlin, he said, “We listeners didn’t feel that the prisoners were our fellow countrymen any more. We knew of all the horrible things that were happening in Eastern Europe with the killing of the Jews. And we knew that would have happened to us if we had stayed in Germany.”

Who would have thought that some of the most important decisions in a World War would come from a mansion in which German POW’s were maintained in high style? The Germans certainly didn’t. God moves in mysterious ways. God’s foolishness would still be wiser than the cumulative wisdom of all men who ever lived. In His wisdom He chose a German of Jewish descent to help reveal to the world the atrocities of the Holocaust. It is the same wisdom that He used to choose Israel as the nation through which He chose to reveal Himself and to be a blessing to all mankind.

Pray with us for the peace of Jerusalem. (Psalm 122:6) God still loves them. He always will. And He will redeem them at just the right time.

Mirko Basaldella (1910 Udine - 1969 Cambridge USA) is an Italian painter and sculptor. He was one of the protagonists of the renewal of post-war Italian sculpture. Its proximity to the Roman school contributes to the fact that his research focuses at first on classical mythology and he rediscovers working methods that go back to ancient Greek sculpture. Between 1939 and 1945 he was deeply moved by Cubism. A series of trips to the Middle East and the transfer to the United States in 1957 contributed to the creation of works inspired by Eastern culture. Mirko's sculpture is steeped in myths that are never recognizable or told, but rather remembered emotionally. His statues are a concentration of visceral force, stability and primordial expressivity, with the aim of reaching the essence of things and human nature. The three-dimensional shape thus becomes an emotional concentration and, conveyed to the viewer, it appears as a magical revelation.

Title of the work: Lion of Damascus

This work can be admired in the Middelheim open-air museum in Antwerp: www.middelheimmuseum.be/en

The sacrifices made by 'The Few' as well as 'The Many' in the Battle of Britain 75 years ago, have been remembered at a national service in St Paul's.

Entitled Leading the Nation's Thanks, the service on Tuesday 15 September 2015 organised with the Royal Air Forces Association paid tribute to all the men and women who contributed to help win the Battle.

The Mission style depot was built in 1909 to served the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad. In 1946, the building was remodeled to into a Santa Fe "style" station. An outstanding feature the building is the eight-sided, one and-a-half -story track-side tower. The station served passengers until 1971. In 2018, the building was the home to the local Chamber of Commerce and the Bartlesville Development Corporation. The building is located in the Bartlesville Downtown Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property.

He contributed greatly to the liturgy of the Synagogue Service. His most famous works were composed during his tenure as musical director at the Neue Synagoge in Berlin and his melodies form a substantial part of synagogue services around the world today.

The Weißensee Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery located in the neighborhood of Weißensee in Berlin, Germany. It is the second largest Jewish cemetery in Europe. The cemetery covers approximately 42 ha (100 acres) and contains approximately 115,000 graves. It was dedicated in 1880.

The land was bought by the Jewish community of Berlin (German: Jüdische Gemeinde zu Berlin), comprising - besides congregants of orthodox and reform affiliation - mostly observants of mainstream Judaism (in today's term described at best as conservative Judaism). The old Jewish cemetery in Große Hamburger Straße, opened 1672, had reached its full capacity in 1827. The second cemetery in Schönhauser Allee, opened in the same year, reached its capacity in the 1880s, offering only few remaining gravesites in family ensembles mostly reserved for widows and widowers next to their earlier deceased spouses. Weißensee Cemetery was designed by renowned German architect Hugo Licht in the Italian Neorenaissance style. It was inaugurated in 1880. The surrounding walls and main building (where the archives are kept and the cemetery is administered) were constructed with a distinctive yellow brick. A second building (built in 1910) was destroyed during World War II.

The grave plots are arranged into 120 different sections, each with its own geometric shape. The lavish way in which the more well-to-do individuals and families interred here chose to fashion their mausoleums using the latest art nouveau designs is very apparent.

Photo from John Fulkes's collection. John Fulkes 1949 - 2004

Michael Spencer, Head Teacher of Lord Williams’s, where John had taught since 1975, contributed the following tribute:

John Fulkes was someone who always put everyone else before himself. He was a deeply loved man who inspired young people to do great things. Generations of students passing through the school owe a great deal to John Fulkes. He developed their love of literature, motivated them to great deeds on the sports field, helped to sort out their tangled lives and, most of all, supported them in the belief that they could go on to achieve their potential in the world. In this foreword to the Sixth Form Year Book, he says: "…the school is summed up in so many of you – young people with energy and enthusiasm yet caring and sensitive all-rounders, able to cope, stand on your own feet and get things done for yourselves and your community."

John Fulkes believed that every young person had the potential to be successful. He never gave up on any individual. In that sense he was the embodiment of the school motto: Sic Itur Ad Astra…A Tous Venaunts – translated as ‘Thus the way to the stars..for all-comers.’ He dedicated his life to young people.

John Fulkes was born and bred in Thame (13.06.49), the only child of Mr and Mrs G Fulkes, who ran the bakery and post office in Park Street. He attended the John Hampden Primary School before moving to Lord Williams’s Grammar School as a pupil in 1959. He then went on to study English and English Literature at Trinity College, Oxford before training as a teacher at Nottingham University.

After teaching for four years at Sutton Manor High School in Surrey, John Fulkes joined the staff at Lord Williams’s School as an Assistant English Master, in 1975. Norman Lilley, a former Science Master and Head of House at the school, remembers John Fulkes as a pupil and said that his desire to come and teach at his former school was partly in gratitude for all that it had done for him as a pupil and that this was a way of giving something back. John Fulkes became Head of Sixth Form (where he was know affectionately by the students as ‘JF’) in 1985.

He was a single man whose life revolved around his passions of education, cricket, drama and literature, Lord Williams’s School and the community of Thame. Following a period of a few years as a Town Councillor in the 1980s, he became Mayor of Thame in 1985. He was a great advocate of the community and was a driving force in developing Lord Williams’s School as a community school. He ran the school 1st XI cricket team for many years and nurtured successive generations of young talent. He was ahead of his time in forming links between school and the local club and County Cricket Associations. John was Chairman of Thame Cricket Club at the time of his death, having been a key figure in the club ever since he returned to Thame to teach. He was extremely influential in Oxfordshire cricket and was a member of the Oxfordshire Cricket Board. He was a team manager of the Oxfordshire U14 County Cricket XI, and both Secretary and Treasurer of the Oxfordshire Youth Cricket Committee. He was a qualified umpire and would also frequently be seen mowing the field or preparing the pitch. John Fulkes also organised all Oxfordshire Schools County Cricket competitions.

His love of drama and English Literature was manifested in his teaching and his active participation in drama activities. He regularly participated in the Crendon Mystery Plays and in the past had produced many plays at Lord Williams’s Lower school. As a pupil in the school he played the lead role in the World Premier of a Noel Coward play, directed in the school by Gerard Gould.

Mỹ Tho, the capital city of Tiền Giang Province in Vietnam, is a vibrant hub of culture and commerce. Nestled in the Mekong Delta region, it boasts a rich history dating back to the 1680s when it was founded by Chinese refugees.

Today, Mỹ Tho is a mosaic of bustling markets, educational institutions, and technological advancements. The city's diverse population includes the Kinh majority and minority groups such as the Hoa, Cham, and Khmer, contributing to its dynamic social fabric. With its scenic river views and famous rice noodle soup, hủ tiếu Mỹ Tho, the city continues to charm visitors and locals alike.
