This is a photograph from the Father Murphy AC 5 Mile Road Race, Fun Run, and Walk was held in Kildalkey, Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland on Easter Sunday 20th April at 12 noon.

This is the fourth successive year when the race has been staged in Kildalkey with races previous to 2011 held in the neighbouring parish village of Ballivor. The routing is a modification on the two previous years. This race combined an open 5 mile race and the annual Meath 5 mile road race championship.

 

The weather was almost perfect, if a little breezy, for almost 200 runners, joggers, and walkers participating in the event. There were some great post-race refreshments available for competitors in the Kildalkey Community Center afterwards. Well done to everyone involved - from the members of Fr. Murphy AC, to the neighbouring clubs in Co. Meath - all of whom helped to continue to fine tradition that this race has built up over the past number of years. Fr. Murphy AC was formed in 1970 from the amalgamation of several smaller local clubs and now offers some very fine facilities to the people of this part of Co. Meath.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

 

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

 

     ►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

     ►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

     ►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

     ►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

  

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. About the archive:

The Nicholson Museum holds over 1800 glass-plate negatives taken by Woodhouse while in Greece in 1890s and early 1900s. A small portion of the archive also includes photographs of his family in the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia. The collection documents important archaeological sites, significant landscapes of the Greek mainland, contemporary buildings and the people he met along the way. His archive is a rich resource capturing many sites pre-archaeological excavation and before modern industrial development. Some of the photographs were published by Woodhouse in his book 'Aetolia: its geography, topography, and antiquities' published in 1897. His desire to capture Greece on 'film', was simply put in his introduction: "History only attains its full value by borrowing actuality from geography and topography". The archive shows his love not only for the sites but also for the people and spirit of Greece.

 

About the project:

We are asking you to contribute to our documentation of this collection and assist us with the identification of the hundreds of different monuments and places in Greece. The title of each photograph will include the museum registration number (NM2007.##.##) and may already include a place name where museum staff or Woodhouse himself have titled the image.

All of our flikr contributors will be acknowledged when the collection is published through our online collections at the completion of the project.

Great Dixter Gardens, East Sussex, UK: These historic Grade 1 gardens, which surround a medieval manor house, are truly inspirational. They have the most amazing, vibrant, and imaginative planting schemes I have ever seen in a garden anywhere! The level of visual detail and ‘complexity’ in the planting schemes is awesome: with so many different plants all contributing to the overall picture. I often stand for many minutes in this garden just ‘taking in the scene’. The more I look, the more I see and the more I appreciate the level of planning and effort that has gone into creating this visually dynamic country garden.

 

Although all the plants look very natural growing together, as though they have almost planted themselves in their growing positions, to get a garden looking this good with such exuberant colors and dense planting requires a very high level of maintenance indeed.

 

The attention to planting detail at Great Dixter even goes down to the superb arrangements of plants in containers located at strategic points throughout the garden. These are a fantastic combination of plant varieties, forms, colours, textures - and with brilliant use of foliage too.

 

Considering the gardens are built around a medieval English manor house (parts of which date back to the 15th century), the visitor could assume Great Dixter was just another conventional English garden. Whilst the garden structure (much of which was originally designed by the celebrated architect Edwin Lutyens ) has many conventional elements such as topiary, box and yew hedging, garden rooms, etc., the planting schemes developed by the late Christopher Lloyd are far more dynamic than the Gertrude Jekyl ‘muted palette harmonious approach’. In fact, some of the colour combinations in this highly influential and innovative garden are quite shocking, but most of the time they work really well and bring a great energy, vibrancy and life to the garden.

The gardens are situated near the village of Northiam, about ten miles north of the coastal town of Hastings and to the north-west of the picturesque ancient town of Rye.

Dadès Gorges (French: Gorges du Dadès) is a gorge and lies in the Atlas Mountains, Morocco. Berbers built many kasbahs in vicinity of gorges with defence purposes. These many kasbahs with combination of natural beauty contributes to high tourist attractivity in recent years.

Georgia will continue to contribute to international efforts in addressing large movements of migrants and refugees - regardless of our small size or our own security challenges. - was a key note message in the speech delivered by H.E. Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia at a High Level Meeting on Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters today. Prime Minister also noted that 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was launched one year ago, from that very UN tribune, with a pledge that "no one will be left behind".

"With this statement the UN Member States committed to address the consequences of a migrant crisis which was already leaving millions stranded. Yet forced displacement has since then only increased, with a staggering 300 million international migrants, refugees and internally displaced persons registered this year. Against this backdrop conflicts and insecurity in parts of Africa and the Middle East continue to drive mass exodus, and the death toll of migrants crossing borders continues to climb. Millions globally are still at risk of being left behind" noted the Prime Minister of Georgia.

 

Head of the Government of Georgia stressed that burden of forced displacement has not bypassed Georgia.

Since the early 90s, Georgia's regions of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia have witnessed several waves of ethnic cleansing under occupation by the Russian Federation. Approximately 400 000 persons have been forcibly displaced - when Georgia's entire population makes up only 4 million. Prospects of their safe return are grim with ongoing creeping annexation and installation of barbed wire fences along the occupation line. Meanwhile, ethnic Georgians in the occupied territories continue to suffer from daily discrimination. It is simply not possible to turn a blind eye to this, and to what is going on worldwide" added the Prime Minister of Georgia.

 

As noted by the Head of Government, Georgia has already received more than 4 000 asylum seekers from various parts of the world, e.g Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Egypt, and Somalia. Georgian Universities offer educational programmes for students from displaced communities. "We are committed to continuing our assistance in the educational sphere, together with interested partners, including donor countries or organisations that can provide financial support to this initiative" added the Prime Minister of Georgia.

 

In his opinion, International Organisation for Migration, Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and other international agencies have made immense efforts to alleviate the plight of victims. But the gravity of the situation requires a coordinated political response - the situation now is unprecedented. "We need to address the root causes of forced displacement to ensure the situation does not get out of control. We need to be proactive rather than reactive, prevent escalation of conflicts and preclude further waves of displacement. The question is: where do we start? Violation of international law is one of the root causes of conflicts. If we make sure that all actors abide by the law and strictly observe their commitments, we can start moving towards a more peaceful world. We can start preventing crises and the mass exodus that ensues from the millions affected. At the Istanbul World Humanitarian Summit this May we committed to promote a new approach and support the emergence of safe, dignified, and durable solutions for refugees and internally displaced persons. The right to safe return is a basic human right and it must be guaranteed, irrespective of political differences" concluded the Prime Minister of Georgia.

This is a photograph from the 5th annual Braveheart 5KM Trail Run which was held in the wonderful historic grounds of Trim Castle, Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland at 20:00 on Friday 13th June 2014. This unique event is staged along the banks of the Boyne and will take in many of the medieval sites of the town through the Porchfields. The heritage trails of Trim are an excellent leisure resource, and always prove popular with runners. Trim Castle, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, was constructed over a thirty-year period by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter. Hugh de Lacy was granted the Liberty of Meath by King Henry II in 1172. This race is the envy of many in Ireland as it is an opportunity for runners to run in one of the world's most historic castles. This year over 600 runners took part. Congratulations to everyone in Trim AC for staging an incredible night of racing. The beautiful summer's evening made the event one which was raced in the most perfect of settings.

The race is run completely within Porchfields in Trim. Views of Trim Castle dominate the race from almost all vantage points. The race starts close to the Yellow Steeple and proceeds clockwise around the upper field of Porchfields. The route then goes right down to the River Boyne and use the pedestrian underpass under the R154 to access the easterly field in Porchfields. The race then proceeds to complete a full loop of this field. Part of this loop is on grass and then remainder of the loop joins the tarmac walkway along the Boyne. The route then brings runners back under the road to the westerly field in Porchfields where another loop is done before heading up-hill towards the finish beneath the Yellow Steeple.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

 

     ►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

     ►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

     ►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

     ►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

An African Oradour...

  

Barlonyo (also Bar Lonyo, meaning "field of wealth" in Luo) is a village in northern Uganda near Lira town. Here follows the text of the remembrance book for the massacre of 2014, made by residents themselves.

The survivors perform regularly an re-enactment of what happened in their village. The pictures were made in November 2016, at the same time while the International Criminal Court (ICC) was starting the trials of the main suspect of the massacre, former LRA commander Dominic Ongwen.

Barlonyo martyr village

 

Before the War

  

Since 1986, a civil war has taken place between the Government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Before the war the Langi people of Lira district and the people of Barlonyo made a living by farming and taking care of the livestock.

 

Barlonyo means “place of wealth”; a piece of land where people can be wealthy with hard work. Previously, life around Barlonyo was characterized by hunting, fishing, traditional dances and storytelling, and the cultivation of crops, small businesses and cattle rearing,

 

The civil war lead to the creation of displacement camps in Lira and disrupted their way of life.

  

After a government offensive called “Operation Iron Fist” in late 2002, Lira district became even more insecure. The LRA began attacking civilians in Lira district and as a result, nearby civilians in Lira voluntarily created Barlonyo camp between September and November 2002. Barlonyo is 26 km north of Lira town and sits next to the River Moroto.

In the afternoon of 21 February 2004, over 300 people were murdered in less than three hours and thousands were displaced to neighbouring camps.

This book is to remember and honour the lives of those who were killed and affected by the massacre. It is also meant to recognize how Barlonyo has moved forward after the massacre, and to memorialize their story so the next generation in Barlonyo does not allow such an atrocity to happen again.

5:00 pm

 

300 LRA gather in the fields outside of Barlonyo to receive attack instructions from Okot Odhiambo. According to one soldier who participated in the raid, Odhiambo told the LRA soldiers: “I have received order from the high command of the LRA. You are to kill every living Thing. Kill the old people, kill the adults, kill the government soldiers, and abduct all the young children and boys.”

 

Several civilians spot the rebels and try to alert the camp. The LRA becomes suspicious of the civilians who had run Back to the camp and they started to shoot in their direction. The rebels fired an RPG (Rocket-Propelled Grenade) toward the detach. At this time one person is shot.

  

5:30 pm

 

The LRA, headed by 7 fighters, splits into 3 groups. One group attacks the militia detach and sets it on fire. 28 soldiers and some of the family members were in the barracks and all were killed in the attack. The groupe attacking the detach then continues on the main camp.

 

The camp residents did not realize that the detach was being attacked and were doing activities such as bathing, cooking, drinking and playing cards when the LRA arrived. The other two groups surrounded the main camp and begin massacring civilians and abducting others. There were over 300 LRA rebels with 100 guns, a bomb, two J2s, Ak-47 and clubs and sticks. A small gap of fighters on the western side of the camp allows some civilians, Amuka and LDU to escape. Some hide in the bushes and others run to Ogur.

 

7:30 pm

 

After the massacre was over Odhiambo blew his whistle, gathered the rebels under a tree, and tied all of the new abductees to the tree. At least 24 people were kidnapped and taken to carry looted goods or serve in the rank and file of the LRA. They marched their captives, most laden with heavy food stuffs and luggage to the river Moroto (3 km away).

 

8:30 pm

 

Several people struggled to cross the deep river and were punished for their caution. One woman spilled millet as she stumbled, and was promptly chopped to death with a panga. Twenty people were killed by the LRA at the River Moroto by smashing their heads and stabbing them with bayonets. The group carries on into Okwang.

 

By the end of the massacre over 300 residents of Barlonyo were shot, mutilated with pangas, beaten to death with sticks or pierced with bayonets. Many others were burned to death after following instructions to enter their homes. Those who tried to escape were killed. No one was spared and after only three hours, the LRA retreated from the camp.

  

Remembering the dead:

 

There is a cement mass grave and memorial statue commemorating the massacre of Barlonyo camp. As seen above, the official government record claims that only 121 were massacred at Barlonyo even though the death toll was over 300 people according to community members and the camp commanders list. The actual number can never be known, as many lost were young children or left no one to account for them.

 

Every year a prayer ceremony takes place on 21 February to remember the massacre. Representatives from the government attend and the entire community comes together to pray for the massacre victims: “The prayer ceremonies are good because people from other places come together. It makes them know people love them, council them, it makes them normal.”

 

Some survivors hold on to some of the possessions of los friends and family members as a way of remembering them. For those who did not have their hut burned down, objects such as ID cards, cooking pots, and clothing are a way to remember their lost loved ones.

  

A group of Barlonyo community members performs dramatic performances about the massacre to both visitors and the people of Barlonyo. The performances are done by a local youth group as a way of bringing people together and coping with the massacre. “It makes them remember what happened here. It helps them with their trauma… It’s not just for the sake of playing but bringing people together.”

 

As the Barlonyo community moves on after the massacre, men and women are worried about poverty, hunger and sickness in their daily lives. One Barlonyo resident said: “We ne3ed institutions at Barlonyo to remember. Hospitals, security, education, better memorials.”

Not only can institutions serve as a memorial to the massacre, but they can help the Barlonyo community recover from their experiences and flourish in the aftermath of the civil war. The needs described on the next page were based on a series of conversations with the people of Barlonyo.

Today the people of Barlonyo are returning to their ancestral homes. They focus on cultivating their gardens, providing for their families, and educating their children.

 

Without fulfilling community need, like provision of hospitals and schools, the community will continue to face many challenges. “We want our children to know the impact of the massacre.”

 

“It is important to remember the past while also looking towards prospects for the future. The Barlonyo community needs to remember their past while having the opportunity top provide for the next generation of Barlonyo. The task before Barlonyo today is to thrive in the villages while giving respect to the loved ones they have lost. Many people explained the importance of memory to them as a way for the children to know their ancestors, as well as a lesson so that a tragedy like Barlonyo never happens again.

 

It is becoming so that they cannot remember really… We need to remember the massacre and to give it to our children so that they can remember our beloved ancestors.

It is with this spirit of remembrance alongside the need to move forward that characterizes Barlonyo and the aftermath of the massacre today.”

“We felt no guilt. On the contrary, we felt proud to be able to contribute to the British war effort. I’m proud of what we did!” ~ Fritz Lustig

 

During World War II a select group of German generals were held by the British in what must have been, and probably is, the most luxurious POW camp in history. Imagine men who were so arrogant that, in spite of their known brutality, thought that they were being held in comfort and style because of their position. In fact, in letters to home, they often boasted at how stupid the British were.

 

The generals were allowed to have personal servants, just as they were accustomed to. That ate fine food and were permitted to have wine at dinner. As many as 59 German generals occupied the Trent Park facility during the war.

 

A welfare officer – almost like a concierge – drove into London once a week to do personal shopping for the generals. His name was Lord Aberfeldy. Colonel Thomas Kendrick, the MI6 overseer of Trent Park amused the generals with occasional garden parties. While their cohorts were wreaking havoc on the European continent and slaughtering millions of Jews, these generals laughed at the inordinate hospitality of the Brits.

 

It turns out that the joke was on the Germans. MI6 came upon the idea of making the generals comfortable on the principle that, if they were comfortable and properly arranged, they would talk amongst themselves and might possibly reveal secrets that would otherwise have taken hours upon hours of tedious interrogation.

 

MI6 was right. Trent Park was packed with audio surveillance devices. Fritz Lustig was one of about 100 Germans who were loyal to the British cause who was sitting at a listening station, completely unbeknownst to the generals, transcribing every conversation. Lord Aberfeldy was a pseudonym for an MI6 agent. Colonel Kendrick especially enjoyed the garden parties, never revealing for a moment his fluency in German.

 

Mr. Lustig, who is now 93 years old and living in London, is one of only a few remaining listeners. Lustig’s family tree was Jewish, so he immigrated to England in April 1939. He knew he would not be Aryan enough to escape Hitler’s Final Solution. Although he had been born in Berlin, he said, “We listeners didn’t feel that the prisoners were our fellow countrymen any more. We knew of all the horrible things that were happening in Eastern Europe with the killing of the Jews. And we knew that would have happened to us if we had stayed in Germany.”

 

Who would have thought that some of the most important decisions in a World War would come from a mansion in which German POW’s were maintained in high style? The Germans certainly didn’t. God moves in mysterious ways. God’s foolishness would still be wiser than the cumulative wisdom of all men who ever lived. In His wisdom He chose a German of Jewish descent to help reveal to the world the atrocities of the Holocaust. It is the same wisdom that He used to choose Israel as the nation through which He chose to reveal Himself and to be a blessing to all mankind.

MVRDV developed a strategy to gradually redevelop the historic structure and add a new volume dedicated to Modern Art. Inside the new structure a series of activators are collected, being released in summer activating the district. New Holland Island as curatable space, the informal and contemporary inside the monumental city, a cultural Trojan Horse. The historic buildings are treated with upmost respect as imposed by the UNESCO environment and economically upgraded in a gentrification strategy comparable to organic urban renewal on a larger scale.
