The Pitt Community College Continuing Education Division closed out a successful short-term training program last month that led to students gaining portable industry credentials they can take to the workplace.

“’Project Tool Up’ was a great success this year,” said PCC Industrial Instructor/Coordinator Zack Cleghorn. “It’s a program that really helps the community by exposing people to the higher education system and by giving them the skills and certifications needed to work in today’s manufacturing centers.

“I am fairly confident that what we did here impacted these people’s lives and set them on a path for success.”

According to Cleghorn, the 12 students that participated in “Project Tool-Up” earned Lean Six Sigma (Yellow Belt) and OSHA 10 certifications. He said they also completed manufacturing-focused courses in problem-solving, shop math and workplace communication.

Cleghorn said a session on resume writing was also part of the training and added that representatives from six local businesses interviewed participants at the conclusion of the program.

PNCA presents The Big Draw. October 25, 2014. The Big Draw includes activities for ages 4-99 including drawing with pencils and pastels, with vegetable colors and threads and drawing as observation and as performance. As the event unfolds, our individual and collaborative drawings will intersect our Campus Commons in myriad lines and shapes. Come and reframe the expectations of drawing with your mark-making at The Big Draw.

The 2014 Big Draw will run from October 1st to November 2nd across the UK and in twenty other countries, with 280,000 people expected to join in over 1000+ events. The Big Draw offers thousands of enjoyable drawing activities, which connect people of all ages with museums, outdoor spaces, artists, designers, illustrators - and each other. These events are for those who love to draw, as well as for those who think they can’t!

At PNCA, in addition to traditional drawing materials, join us for non-traditional mark-making including 3D drawing, Giant Crayons drawing, needle & thread images, drawings that move, and our event’s centerpiece, the Big World Drawing. There will also be a Zine Factory hosted by Sarah Wolf Newlands’ Freshman Inquiry classes, “Work of Art,” from Portland State University.

PNCA President Tom Manley and Powell's CEP Miriam Sontz discuss the impact of PNCA and Powells on the creative and economic development of the City of Portland with participants of the 2014 Portland Creative Camp.

Portland Creative Camp is a series of weekly workshops for emerging to mid-career professionals from Japan offered in collaboration by PNCA's Continuing Education Department and Freedom University, Tokyo. Program participants are interested in changemaking that is personally meaningful, professionally sustainable and impactful at the community level. They come to Portland and PNCA for ideas and inspiration that they take back to and apply to their contexts in urban and, for some of them, rural Japan. Portland Creative Camp introduces the participants to art and design strategies as well as to innovative initiatives in the Portland metro area via small organizations and large businesses, public and private institutions.
