The Chinooks continue to blow, it's 50 degrees at my house this morning...unheard of in January in Fairbanks.
The winds continue to make for wonderful sunrise shots. Further, it's easy to get up before the sun this time of year as it doesn't rise until after 10 am.
Continuing the lab theme, I have a falcon tube (basically plastic screw top test-tubes) containing ethanol. Main uses of ethanol in a molecular biology lab are sterilizing equipment and precipitating DNA. We're also fond of drinking the stuff, although generally while not in the lab, and usually not neat.
Continuing on from my series at the Acropolis, the clouds changed direction again so I captured the Parthenon from this angle. It looked like there as smoke billowing out from the top! Almost scary.
If anyone is wondering whether this is HDR, its not. Just a little post editing work in iPhoto on my Mac.
... Falmer throughout... keeps pulling him further he feels from the path to find the bow.....

Kim was stoked to be talking to the original Uhura, Nichelle Nichols, who was in the audience to view the premiere of Star Trek Continues. Kim told me, "Did you see that?"
Some of the few organized sports being play in the country are in Iowa, where high school baseball and softball is underway with some restrictions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. I captured some photos of Lincoln High School taking on Dowling Catholic High School at Principal Park, home of the AAA Iowa Cubs.
Look t the Original size of this photo to see the sharp detail of rocks, vegetation, & yet another very steep portion of the overall climb.
The ridge continued their impressive start to the season with a 5-0 win against Bacup which sees them up into 3rd in the league. Goals from Tom Ince (2), Morrison, Hart and an own goal.
This is about 10 miles away from Iao Valley (www.flickr.com/photos/52544814@N00/14419287660/). Such a vast difference between the north-east part of the West Mountain and the south-east part.
Obviously we are not in rain forest territory here.
This trail was quite old (about 200 years old) and used to be how the Hawaiians crossed the mountain to get to the west/desert side of the island (where Lahaina is, the town where I started my holiday with July 4th celebrations).
It gains ~1600 feet in 2.5 miles. I almost didn't do it as I set aside my final full day on Maui for relaxation (I rented a condo directly on the beach and intended to spend all day there reading and sipping Mai Tais). I am glad that the urge to climb took over me. This was a great hike.

Georgia will continue to contribute to international efforts in addressing large movements of migrants and refugees - regardless of our small size or our own security challenges. - was a key note message in the speech delivered by H.E. Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia at a High Level Meeting on Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters today. Prime Minister also noted that 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was launched one year ago, from that very UN tribune, with a pledge that "no one will be left behind".
"With this statement the UN Member States committed to address the consequences of a migrant crisis which was already leaving millions stranded. Yet forced displacement has since then only increased, with a staggering 300 million international migrants, refugees and internally displaced persons registered this year. Against this backdrop conflicts and insecurity in parts of Africa and the Middle East continue to drive mass exodus, and the death toll of migrants crossing borders continues to climb. Millions globally are still at risk of being left behind" noted the Prime Minister of Georgia.
Head of the Government of Georgia stressed that burden of forced displacement has not bypassed Georgia.
Since the early 90s, Georgia's regions of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia have witnessed several waves of ethnic cleansing under occupation by the Russian Federation. Approximately 400 000 persons have been forcibly displaced - when Georgia's entire population makes up only 4 million. Prospects of their safe return are grim with ongoing creeping annexation and installation of barbed wire fences along the occupation line. Meanwhile, ethnic Georgians in the occupied territories continue to suffer from daily discrimination. It is simply not possible to turn a blind eye to this, and to what is going on worldwide" added the Prime Minister of Georgia.
As noted by the Head of Government, Georgia has already received more than 4 000 asylum seekers from various parts of the world, e.g Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Egypt, and Somalia. Georgian Universities offer educational programmes for students from displaced communities. "We are committed to continuing our assistance in the educational sphere, together with interested partners, including donor countries or organisations that can provide financial support to this initiative" added the Prime Minister of Georgia.
In his opinion, International Organisation for Migration, Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and other international agencies have made immense efforts to alleviate the plight of victims. But the gravity of the situation requires a coordinated political response - the situation now is unprecedented. "We need to address the root causes of forced displacement to ensure the situation does not get out of control. We need to be proactive rather than reactive, prevent escalation of conflicts and preclude further waves of displacement. The question is: where do we start? Violation of international law is one of the root causes of conflicts. If we make sure that all actors abide by the law and strictly observe their commitments, we can start moving towards a more peaceful world. We can start preventing crises and the mass exodus that ensues from the millions affected. At the Istanbul World Humanitarian Summit this May we committed to promote a new approach and support the emergence of safe, dignified, and durable solutions for refugees and internally displaced persons. The right to safe return is a basic human right and it must be guaranteed, irrespective of political differences" concluded the Prime Minister of Georgia.

I was in a Tim Hortons line-up, and I saw this W900 approaching. Out comes the zoom lens. Bad idea, because I only got a piece of the truck in each picture! Well, here's the series.
After an age the flywheel has finally been removed to paint the rest of the engine, and to paint the inside of the flywheel. Here is the picture of flywheel having just been given a quick coat of red oxide

Overall impression. Splendido continues its splendid reign over Canadian cuisine. With much focus of the restaurant team likely on the newest member of the Spelendido family (Nota Bene opening the week after), I was afraid that the dining room would lack a bit of the usual attention and polish. Although not full, the staffs present were attentive and accommodating (don't expect snooty attitudes, but a friendly warm greeting), kind enough to make dietary substitutions and mixing and matching the current tasting menu with other fantastic menu offerings (and one created just for the evening) to suit our table's interest in trying out the restaurant's wears. Featuring many Canadian focused dishes (and wines – oh how I was spoiled with the recent bombardment of old world/French wines), the restaurant's fare may not be able to compete with its US neighbours for refined hotel styled cooking, but it is a wonderful representative of top notch Canadian cuisine. I have a bias for the rich and eclectic source of products that are produced from this country, including game, wild fruits, vegetables and plant products. Each experience at Splendido convinces me more that Splendido's kitchen is probably our country's best in producing Canadian fare using purely Canadian ingredients. The components in each dish were notably fresh and top notch; their pairings on the plate, safe – which may also be the only criticism – things are too safe. But Splendido is not known to be experimental or innovative, just refined and uncomplicated, in other words, good. Oh Canada indeed.

Actually I added more after this photo. I want to get more red and turquoise back into it.
That's what's so nice about acrylics, you can just add another layer if you lose something that you liked!
You are not alone.
You are not a solitary seed,
rashly tossed about the wind.
You are one branch of a thousand.
Tied and tangled and twisted
to a towering tree that
stretches beyond this
stifling atmosphere.
You are a part
of something that
continues to climb.

Henry can hear footsteps in the distance.
Soles clipping the pavement with each step. Henry waits, the rythm on the steps cannot keep up with the speed of his racing heart.
"A customer! I have a customer..." he whispers under his breath as he sees him approach "...my very first customer. One customer to use my tables. And they said, I was wasting my time...I have a customer!"
Like a deer in headlights, he is frozen, watching his man...closer and closer.
The footsteps get louder and louder as the customer approaches. Henry's hands begin to tremble, the excitement is almost to much.
The tables are perfect, Henry knows that but this is a customer...How about that!
Within a few feet, Henry welcomes his guest "Hello Sir...Wel..." but stops short.
The footsteps are now getting quieter before fading...as his "guest" walks past. Henry goes back to dressing his tables lunchtime has nearly past.

Continuing my stroll on 19 May 2018. This was the view south from Chesnut Grove to Chesnut Road, and the new Protheroe House.
My photo shows some good news: Haringey Council (or its contractors) have repaired the bollards
Why are they needed? The central section of Chesnut Road is gated, with cars and other vehicles excluded so people can walk, stroll, push buggies, cycle, dawdle, and hang-out. Without worrying very much about speeding cars, trucks and motorbikes.
Without this restriction the road would become just another through route between High Road Tottenham and Park View Road and Tottenham Hale station.
From time to time the gates and bollards are damaged.
Continuing my Christmas theme for this week, we see here another advertisement from the Enlarged Christmas Number Woman's Pictorial of 1st December 1928. I guess that must have been a very expensive gift that only the most well-off could afford back then. In the 1930s my grandfather bought my grandmother a "Hoover" upright cleaner; this had a light to gently illuminate the floor as it went about its duties. The cleaner never broke down and I guess it might still work if I plugged it in and tried it - yes, that's right, I still have it!
