It was a cold cold evening, yesterday. During the waiting, I could see the grass slowly turn white. By the time the two freight trains had passed, my tripods were covered with a thin frosted layer.
The first train, hauled by a Traxx locomotive, looks like a train from Antwerp to Dourges. The second one is the most intriguing though. Description of the load was “big white containers”, and indeed: it was a train full of big white containers. We can only guess about the most secret content. Would it have been booster shots, nuclear waste, fireworks, mouth masks… or Christmas balls?

Westbound containers re-enter Canada after a brief trip through the United States seen here passing the Canada Customs Sprague Port of Entry. This train was the afternoon/evening's first westbound after a mid-day work window. An eastbound manifest passed here roughly and hour and half prior to the westbound's arrival, so I would guess the two trains met around Graceton, Minnesota or the Ernst, Ontario siding on the Fort Frances Subdivision (my guess is the latter).
Fascinating operation for this train to arrive into southeastern Manitoba. This train likely started the day in Ranier, Minnesota and crossed into Fort Frances, Ontario on the CN Rainy Subdivision and sat for the work window to wrap up before setting out west on the CN Fort Frances Subdivision. Next, it traveled 70 miles to Rainy River, Ontario and crossed the Rainy River itself into Baudette, Minnesota. Forty-five miles later the train returned to Canada by crossing the international border here near Buffalo Point, Manitoba.
Nice to finally see the Manitoba side of the international border and see both east and westbound traffic. This visit to Manitoba completed my coverage of the railroad crossing between Minnesota and the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario.

SN: Cycas Revoluta, Cycadaceae Family
This Palm has its origin in the Ryukyu Islands in Southern Japan. Although called Palm it doesn't belong to the Palmaceae family. Nowadays is disseminated all over. Produces a center of future leaves looking like a cabbage. It is quite attractive.
The Sago Palm is one of the most widely grown houseplants in the world because of its attractive, easy-care habit. It's a cycad, not an actual palm. The thick, shiny-green fronds have a slightly cascading appearance and they arise from a stout, brown, textured truck. When it’s container-grown, it performs well in any bright, sun-filled indoor space. This slow-growing evergreen plant is moderately cold hardy (to zone 8) and it’s native to southern Japan. Easy to care for, it prefers a well-drained potting mix or sandy soil when planted outside in southern zones. Sago Palm makes it easy to add a touch of greenery to your indoor living space.

I can't recollect seeing any other pictures of a container train to Dover Town and this is in the very early years of the concept in the UK. This London - Paris Freightliner service began on 22 April 1968, initially with an ER class 47 throughout to Dover but this changed to a SR class 33 from 6 May 1969. Poor loadings saw the service finish the next summer after a brief two year experiment. The train was loaded onto the 17.30 Dover - Dunkirk ferry for an eventual arrival in Paris at 02.58.
The green Slim Jim doesn't have far to it's destination recorded in some very difficult light, looking straight into the sun albeit with most of the scene in heavy shadow. Hence the bad glare at the top. Fortunately a lot of work in Photoshop has corrected most of the deficiencies of the original transparency.
