This giant container ship glided almost silently through the fog over the river Elbe. I was only able to research the ship's name with the help of the register of ship calls in the port of Hamburg

It was the danish Container ship Maersk Edith

Her length overall (LOA) is 397.71 meters and her width is 56.55 meters.

A year ago when I took this there wasn't a whole lot to see through the holes in the hoarding but from visualisations the MVRDV Container extension to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen looks like it should be a very photogenic addition to Rotterdam's architecture.

From Wallpaper website : "Rotterdam based architects MVRDV are working on a building that is neither a museum nor an art storage facility; rather a typology that merges the two. The Collection Building is a new type of cultural venue, where visitors are taken through a museum’s art collection, while it is being exhibited within state-of-the-art conservation spaces.

The project is planned as an extension of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, located in Rotterdam’s well known Museumpark cultural district.

The centuries-old establishment currently keeps its art collection in storage in the museum’s basement, but it has been in constant danger of flooding. MVRDV’s response lies in the design of a structure that acts as an art depot that is open to the public, located only a few metres from its predecessor. Sanne van der Burgh, the project leader, compares it to a ’backstage’ or a ’working’ museum experience."

66 533 hauls a heavy train of containers towards Turves between March and Peterborough with a Felixstowe to Doncaster service.

Whilst a neighbours house was being repaired after being damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes their belongings were put in a container. This was put on the grass outside their house. The underneath of the container had different levels and also bits of wood were put down, so it did not sit directly on the grass. With the different light levels the grass was either green or yellow.

After several years in which cross-border rail traffic was extremely scarce, in mid-2021 container trains started operating between Sofia, Bulgaria and the port of Thessaloniki in Greece. In 2022 this service was reinforced with another shuttle from Dragoman which became the first one ever to utilise the intermodal terminal in Dragoman, more than 10 years after its construction was completed. Both lines are operated by the state railway companies - BDZ Cargo in Bulgaria and TrainOSE in Greece.

On the photo locomotive 43 544 of BDZ Cargo is seen with the train from Dragoman as it runs through the station of General Todorov, shortly before completing its journey in Kulata - the Bulgarian border station with Greece

A house made of three stacked containers with doors and windows carved into it. I experimented with a lot of angled connections for both the exterior and interior. It turned out really well.

The sun is going down and it's time for those two container freights to depart from the Port of Burgas.

The Macro Mondays theme for this week is "Container" Kodak started using metal canisters about the time when Kodachrome was introduced in 1936; they were phased out in the ’70s. This canister with slip on lid and embossed letter was in use in the 1940's. Background is a National Geographic Magazine from March 1945. My birthday issue.

I do like container growing. And I love my sempervivums and sedums and alpine plants. ...maybe I have a premonition of a retirement project.
