Carsten Mueller from German Consulate

Visits Engro’s Plants & CSR Projects

Karachi, Mar 11, 2016: During a recent visit by Mr. Carsten Mueller, Consul & Deputy Head of Mission, German Consulate was taken on a tour of Engro’s various plants and facilities located in the interior of Sindh. He was accompanied by Mr. Wajid Hussain Junejo, Head of Procurement & Materials Management at Engro and Director of the board of German Pakistan Trade & Investment.

Carsten Mueller was initially taken to the flagship fertilizer business of the group located in Daharki where he had the opportunity to witness the world’s largest single train urea project and 5th largest Ammonia Urea facility across the globe. Following this the Consul & Deputy Head of Mission was taken to the Sahara Welfare Society which runs schools, medical centers and skill development centers for girls of the neighboring areas so as to help better their standards of living and further Engro’s philosophy of deploying inclusive business models for the communities that hosts their plants and facilities.

Engro Foundation’s flagship CSR project at Ghotki “Technical Training Center,” also runs in the same area, where boys from the surrounding villages receive various skills training such as Mechanical, Electrical, Welding, Machining and Chemical trades. The first batch that graduated from the center achieved 100% employment. After his tour of the training center, Mr. Carsten Mueller was taken to Engro’s state-of-the-art power plant located in Qadirpur. The Qadirpur plant is one of country’s first ‘green power plants’ since it uses permeate (flare) gas to produce 217 MW power whilst reducing carbon emissions by decreasing the flare at the gas field.

During his visit Mr. Carsten Mueller stated: “I did not expect the countryside of northern Sindh to be so welcoming. I am extremely surprised, by what Engro in its variety of companies has set up in the region. The working environment is world-class – an aspect I could not have imagined. Corporate Social Responsibility is what creates a world of better living for the people you are dealing with. What Engro Corporation’s team has shown me during this trip, starting from Sahara School to the Women Empowerment Initiative in Sukkur, was tremendously amazing. All of this is only possible because of the personal involvement of the Company’s people.” Mr. Carsten also took the opportunity to thank Engro Corporation for providing him with a better understanding of the Company, the work it does and the Pakistani people.

During his trip Mr. Carsten Mueller also visited Engro Foods Sukkur plant and was given a presentation on Engro Foundation’s WELD (Women Empowerment in Livestock Development) project which trains the local women to earn their livelihood through livestock development. Some of the beneficiaries of the project were presented with iPads by Mr. Carsten Mueller.

The trip concluded with a visit to the “Engro Thalassemia Center” at Sukkur which has now been converted to a general hospital serving need-based patients on a self-sustained basis.

In the end Mr. Carsten thanked Engro and Wajid Hussain Junejo for organizing such a marvelous trip and rated Engro as one of the World Class organizations brightening the name of Pakistan around the globe.

Karol Badyna's statue of Polish hero, Jan Karski, was unveiled in front of the Polish Consulate on November 11, 2008--Poland's Independence Day. The statue depicts Karski sitting on a bench, on 37th Street and Madison Avenue, which was renamed Jan Karski Corner, playing chess.

Jan Karski (real name: Kozielewski, 1914-2000) was a Polish Catholic World War II resistance fighter and scholar at Georgetown University. In 1942 and 1943 Karski reported to the Polish government in exile and the Western Allies on the situation in Poland, especially the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto and the extermination camps.

At the unveiling, attended by former Mayor Ed Koch and other Polish dignataries, a letter from one of his favorite and most famous students--President Bill Clinton--was read.

Home of the Consulate General for the Phillipines. Starting from close to the 'Plaza de España', the wide, tree-lined 'Avenida de Palmera' runs north-south and is home to some of the most architecturally impressive private residences in the city - though many have now been taken over as embassies and/or consulate buildings. Seville, itself, is the capital of Andalucia and with a population of over 700,000 is Spain's 4th largest city. Situated on a plain of the River Guadalquivir, it has a history dating back to 200BC when legend has it that it was founded by Hercules. Originally it was known as 'Hispalis' under the Romans and 'Isbiliya' when under the control of the Moors. The high point in its history, not unsurprisingly, followed the discovery of America in 1492. It is a truly wonderful city to visit although in the summer months it gets very hot with temperatures routinely in excess of 40° C (104° F). Indeed, Seville, is generally regarded as the hottest city in Europe so avoid in July and August! There's so much to see in the city, starting as most visitors do with a first view of the city's emblematic 'Giralda', the bell tower of the cathedral, one of the largest in the world. There's the Alcázar Palace and gardens - perhaps not rivalling the Alhambra in its scale and architectural beauty - but not far off! Other treasures include the 'Casa de Pilatos', the 'Torre del Oro', the Ayuntaminto (Town Hall), the 'Archivo General de Indias' (where the historical records of the American continent are kept), the 'Museo de Bellas Artes' (Museum of Fine Arts) which is the second largest picture gallery in Spain. and, of course, many beautiful and revered parish churches, convents and numerous palaces. But for all its magnificent monuments, architecture and fascinating history, Seville is universally admired for being a joyous town; with 'Sevillanos' known for their wit, sparkle and vitality - hardly surprising given its association with Carmen, Don Juan and Figaro! 'Sevillanos' are great actors and put on an extraordinary performance at their annual 'Feria de Abril', a week-long party of drink, food and dance which takes place day and night in more than a thousand especially constructed tents. But above all it allows the men to parade on their fine horses and the women to dance in brilliantly coloured gypsy dresses. Immediately before that is Holy Week, or 'Semana Santa', a religious festival where hooded penitents march In long processions followed by huge baroque floats on which sit images of the Virgin or Christ, surrounded by cheerful crowds. Both of these events are 'must-sees' with the proviso that hotel bookings in the city should be made many months (if not years) beforehand and an acceptance that large, boisterous, always enthusiastic crowds are very much the order of the day. Wandering the tiny side streets of Seville, particularly the Jewish quarter, the 'Barrio Santa Cruz', and the vibrant (former gypsy) quarter of 'Triana', is a delight too; especially when sufficient time is set aside to sample some traditional tapas, drink some locally produced manzanilla (fino sherry) or listen to some impromptu flamenco. Seville has everything and then some! There are plenty more photos of Seville and other Spanish towns/locations if you take a look at my 'Albums' page, www.flickr.com/photos/36623892@N00/sets/ - thank you.

I've passed this building on University Avenue a bajillion times and had zero clue it was the US Consulate. Ick. What kind of 1970's-style bunker building is this?! Seriously functified.

Poland, officially the Republic of Poland is a country located in Central Europe. It is divided into 16 administrative subdivisions, covering an area of 312,696 square kilometres (120,733 sq mi), and has a largely temperate seasonal climate. With a population of nearly 38.5 million people, Poland is the fifth most populous member state of the European Union. Poland's capital and largest metropolis is Warsaw. Other major cities include Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk, and Szczecin.

Poland is bordered by the Baltic Sea, Lithuania, and Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast to the north, Belarus and Ukraine to the east, Slovakia and the Czech Republic to the south, and Germany to the west.

The history of human activity on Polish soil spans almost 500,000 years. Throughout late antiquity it became extensively diverse, with various cultures and tribes settling on the vast Central European Plain. However, it was the Western Polans who dominated the region and gave Poland its name. The establishment of Polish statehood can be traced to 966, when the pagan ruler of a realm coextensive with the territory of present-day Poland embraced Christianity and converted to Catholicism. The Kingdom of Poland was founded in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented its longstanding political association with Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin. This union formed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest (over 1,000,000 square kilometres – 400,000 square miles) and most populous nations of 16th and 17th century Europe, with a uniquely liberal political system which adopted Europe's first written national constitution, the Constitution of 3 May 1791.

With the passing of prominence and prosperity, the country was partitioned by neighbouring states at the end of the 18th century, and regained independence in 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles. After a series of territorial conflicts, the new multi-ethnic Poland restored its position as a key player in European politics. In September 1939, World War II began with the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, followed by the Soviet Union invading Poland in accordance with the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. Approximately six million Polish citizens, including three million of the country's Jews, perished during the course of the war. The Polish People's Republic proclaimed forthwith was a chief signatory of the Warsaw Treaty amidst global Cold War tensions. In the wake of the 1989 events, notably through the emergence and contributions of the Solidarity movement, the communist government was dissolved and Poland reestablished itself as a presidential democratic republic.

Poland has a developed market and is a regional power in Central Europe, with the largest stock exchange in the East-Central European zone. It has the sixth largest economy by GDP (nominal) in the European Union and the tenth largest in all of Europe. It's one of the most dynamic economies in the world, simultaneously achieving a very high rank on the Human Development Index. Poland is a developed country, which maintains a high-income economy along with very high standards of living, life quality, safety, education, and economic freedom. Alongside a developed educational system, the state also provides free university education, social security, and a universal health care system. The country has 16 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 15 of which are cultural.

Poland is a member state of the Schengen Area, the United Nations, NATO, the OECD, the Three Seas Initiative, the Visegrád Group, and guested at the G20.

Toe-tappin’ entertainment was provided courtesy of the youthful Bow Valley Fiddlers. The Hon. Jason Kenney, Canada’s Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, thanked Consul General Lochman for her work to further U.S.-Canada relations. The Greek Consulate General, formerly known as the George and Sarah Rives House or the 67-69 East 79th Street House, was built by Carrére & Hastings in 1907-1908. Modeled on the late 17th century townhouses built on la place Vendôme in Paris, this house was commissioned by the lawyer, statesman (he was assistant Secretary of State), and historian George Rives and his second wife, Sarah. Rives was an active supporter of New York's prominent institutations, sereving on the boards of Colombia University, the New York Public Library, the New York Hospital, and the New York City Rapid Transportation Commission. In 162, Greek architect Pierre Zannettos altered the top two floors of the house and added a sixth story.

The George and Sarah Rives House was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1981.
