Thalidomide casualties offer spare limbs to German Consulate - London 02.10.2013

Thalidomide survivors protested outside the German Consulate in London's Belgrave Square against the German government's 42-year long protection of Grünenthal GMbH - manufacturer of Thalidomide - from prosecution by any victims of the infamous drug which was administered to pregnant women as a cure for morning sickness, but which caused terrible birth deformities in over 10,000 babies worldwide, many of whom died agonising deaths.

The German government passed a special law in 1971 which gives the drug manufacturer immunity from any prosecution by victims of Thalidomide, even though Grünenthal's victims have needed a lifetime of support which has instead been paid for by taxpayers of the countries in which they were born.

Though various Grünenthal senior officials have verbally apologised over the past few years, the company still refuses point blank to pay compensation for the enduring human misery they have caused, and it is alarming to hear that Thalidomide is now being dished out in Brazil as an effective treatment for Leprosy. Though Thalidomide is proving to be very effective, the problem is that unscrupulous doctors and pharmacists in Brazil are not ensuring women are not pregnant before issuing the drug. As a consequence, the horrors of Thalidomide has been unleashed on the favelas, and Grünenthal know they will continue to be unfairly protected by their government.

Grünenthal has never paid a penny of compensation to its victims in Australia, Sweden, Canada or the United Kingdom.

Seit 1985 Aufenthalt in Deutschland. Seit 1994 lebt Natalia Murariu in Köln.

Lost boy at Lebanon protest, in front of US Consulate #1

This was perplexing. I saw this boy standing alone- it seemed to me he might have lost his family. The guards at the US consulate were completely ignoring him. I asked the police what he was doing there- they said they didn't know. I suggested he might be lost- they were indifferent. I asked if they'd even talked to him- NO. And were obviously not going to. It's funny- I thought this situation to among their duties as police. I was always told as a child, "If you're ever lost or in trouble, find a policeman. "I expect he was told the same.

I photographed the boy from beyond the "no go" area where he was standing. One of the cops said to me something like, "You sure pick your battles" (whatever that implies), then criticised the protest group for including their children, this in spite of the fact that it was a very orderly and peaceful march.

I asked if I could get a close-up of the boy, ostensibly to render the "Lebanon" inscribed on his cap visible in my photo, but to also ask him if he was OK. He appeared to be, and seeing this is Toronto and I am a complete stranger, I thought it best to leave him in their "safe company".

I believe that the inclusion of so many children was a poignant and affecting reminder that OVER ONE THIRD of the civilian deaths in the recent bombing of Lebanon by Israel ARE CHILDREN. Boys and girls like these ones. Innocent victims, suffering pointless and unnecessary deaths. Thousands more lie maimed and suffering - the luckier ones in hospitals, while the rest remain unable to reach help. This is a humanitarian crisis of utmost urgency. These children who march want to be seen- to remind us of those whose plight we are overlooking.

La Maison Fenwick, first and oldest American Consulate General, has occupied this site for most of its history since 1790 in Bordeaux. Photo taken June 2004.

The building long ago took the name of the American occupant and chief tenant in 1790, Joseph Fenwick. He became the first US Consular General in 1790 and was from a family with Maryland and South Carolina connections.

The marker, in French and English, reads:

"Here lived Joseph Fenwick, who became the first American Consul in Bordeaux in 1790."

"This plaque, unveiled by Mayor Jacques Chaban-Delmas on November 26, 1990 commemorates the Bicentennial of the U.S. Consulate in Bordeaux, the oldest American consulate in the world."

Charleston merchants were very familiar with Bordeaux in 1790. It had been one of the major points of entry for South Carolina comodities for decades. Carolina gold rice, sea island cotton and raw indigo dye were highly valued products to be traded in major European markets. The profits were used to buy manufactored goods and finished products in the latest styles for resale in Charleston and other American markets. International trade required stable and reliable contacts in order to maintain the confidence between sellers and buyers, in addition to keeping up the reputation of the goods traded. It was very logical that America's first consulate would be established in a port as important to 18th and 19th century Europe as the port of Charleston was to the new American republic.

Unlike Paris in 1790, Bordeaux was still a stable and conservative business environment as the French Revolution was just beginning. The turmoil in Paris and the value of keeping trade opportunities open underscored the importance of the presence of a permanent representative to oversee American interests at a chief point of entry into the country. Bordeaux would eventually experience the violence of the Red Terror but its trade relations with other important ports around the world survived, largely undesturbed, well into the 20th century. The fame of Bordeaux wine and a world demand for it to match, probably helped to keep those trade routes the preferred ones for many foreign brokers, factors and merchant ship captains.

The US consular's offices in Bordeaux would be the first of many such consulates to be established by the US in places around the world other than national capitals. The importance of this one is that it was the first. It also is the one that has remained opened longer than any other. Just as importantly, the Hotel de Fenwick, Joseph Fenwick's former residence and offices still in use, is a reminder of the historic relationship that has always existed between the US and France...even when our governments have been less than agreeable.

Note: According to a reference found on the website, eDiplomat.com, the history of this American Consulate has been on hold since 1976. The story of this and other US Consular offices is recounted in Consular Tales, an online record. The reference states: Consular Tales was inspired by the closing of the American Consulate General in Bordeaux, as a budgetary decision by the Clinton Administration in 1996. This was our oldest American Consulate General, opened by President George Washington in 1790. The mission was only closed briefly twice in its long history, when war between France and the United States seemed possible at the end of the eighteenth century, and then again during the Second World War, during the Nazi Occupation.
