Chinese construction worker, Nassau, Bahamas

They all called me 小姑娘 or “Young miss". This group of workers is by far the most cheerful lot since I started visiting construction sites and photographing workers around Shanghai.

“Come and take my picture!” the elder man, seen above, waved me over when he spotted me. A female worker paused from hauling debris and joked that I should take a photo for him to send home to his wife. “Show her how hard he's working!” she cackled, slapping her knee at her own joke.

This particular building was part of a key thoroughfare that connected one live neighborhood to the main street. Residents on their way out of the alleys had no choice but to walk through all the unsightly and dangerous activity. To get the worker’s attention, they would raise their fist and yell angrily at them to stop hammering so they can pass through, often shielding their head from debris dust coming down like a heavy mist.

So while some of the workers were having a light laugh, a handful of older residents at the end of the alley were scowling endlessly at the whole affair. For they knew that not only was their peace permanently interrupted, but their houses were next to suffer the hammer’s end.

Here are a couple photos from a construction themed shoot I planned. I had really wanted to try this type of rim lighting and when I found two male friend/models I pounced on the opportunity to dress them up as construction workers!!! The best part of the shoot was watching them making a fool of themselves spread Canola Oil on themselves for the *shine*.

Strobist Info:

Two portable speedlights (Nikon SB25, Canon 580EXII) each positioned to the left and right, behind the model. Each speedlight is gobo'ed to protect the camera from lens flare. Key light is created with giant reflector in front of the models.

The labour involved in construction Industry in India by the migrant work force is lowly paid and with low or no safety precautions.....Elevated risk for a living.

Common scene in Banasree Residential area, where a huge number of construction works are going on for a decade.

BEIJING,6MAY98 - A Chinese construction worker strolls past a picture of American-Austrian movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger on display along a Beijing roadside May 6. American films enjoy tremendous popularity in China, where movie tickets to western films can command more than triple the ticket prices than that of domestic films, about 50 yuan ($6.00).

From a small town outside of Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, he looked perfectly airbrushed to be the face of the upcoming Shanghai Expo: the proud craftsman behind the city and its successes.

Dusty and dignified in his work clothes and helmet, he had a look as genial and warm as Premier Wen Jiabao, now affably known among Chinese people as “Grandpa Wen”.

His pride and joy was his daughter who, now at 23, is studying real estate at the Zhejiang University of Technology. That would make her the first university educated offspring in the family.

It’s funny how life comes full circle. The father is helping to demolish old buildings to make way for new ones, while his daughter is studying for a license to eventually sell the gleaming new buildings her father had helped build.

Two giant cranes lift one of 10 girders into place during the February 2012 weekend closure on SR 520. The girders will support the new Bellevue Way overpass.

The busiest construction weekend yet saw crews tackle installation of girders and concrete deck panels at four overpasses along the State Route 520 corridor from Feb. 24-27, 2012. All lanes of the highway were closed so crews could move more than 4 million pounds of massive concrete girders for new lidded overpasses above the highway at Bellevue Way Northeast and 84th Avenue Northeast. Concrete deck panels were installed at Evergreen Point Road and 92nd Avenue Northeast during a chilly weekend that saw heavy rain, hailstorms and plummeting temperatures.

So, why not try to observe and learn(!) something?

One last major project for the year involved adding new maintenance free fascia and soffits to the house. Having some handsome young construction workers doing the job was a side bonus!

December 4th 2020

This summer the region installed sidewalks and repaved my street. Walking around and talking pictures, I discovered that there are a lot of nice guys beneath those hard hats. Here is one of them. I believe this is my favourite picture of all those I took during the construction process this summer

It was super windy in the city yesterday. The warmth of the sun was very welcome. I think this guy was taking a break to enjoy it.

I am pretty sure the tones I wound up with in this were inspired by Damiec's gorgeous redscale film balloon photo.

Not much room for error there. A moment off balance could suddenly lead to lifetime injuries or death. If the developer weren’t so cheap he might let this worker use a cherry picker (small folding crane with controls for the worker in the bucket at the end, used by all the power line workers). iPhone 8+ photo.

There is a lot of construction going on in this old and quaint neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta. Only time will tell how this will impact the current residents and the local economy.
