We met by the tap - he was in cleaning mode, equipped with a new mop. The wrinkles around his eyes have seen many smiles, I have no doubt, even though life for construction workers in Shanghai is no laughing matter. A brilliant smile, a blue T-shirt and energy beautify his being.

An ALCAN (Alaska) Highway construction worker uncovers permafrost in this early 1940s photo from the U.S. Public Roads Administration FWA. Caption: “Chopping permanent ice uncovered in August on the ALCAN Highway. Melting of such ice when the insulating cover is removed is one of the problems solved.”
To say that the permafrost problem was “solved” at that time was premature. Many stretches of the Alaska Highway to this day still have significant roadway upheavals caused by permafrost.
This photo was most likely purchased by Bill for his album of scenes along the Alaska Highway. In 1943 he was a civilian worker constructing the ALCAN Highway in British Columbia and Yukon.

Here are a couple photos from a construction themed shoot I planned. I had really wanted to try this type of rim lighting and when I found two male friend/models I pounced on the opportunity to dress them up as construction workers!!! The best part of the shoot was watching them making a fool of themselves spread Canola Oil on themselves for the *shine*.
