I was at Mass General in August on the day the last beam was raised for a new building at the hospital. The workers had gathered for the ceremony and many signed the beam. The mayor arrived, had his picture taken, and he too signed the beam before it was hoisted to the top of the building. A few short speeches were made and those who watched were quiet and contemplative. It was, in the scheme of the city, a relatively small celebration, but it marked the efforts of many individuals over a period of time. I thought of the nameless workers who built the monumental cathedrals in the world, most of whom never saw the end of projects that went on for decades and even centuries. We marvel at what they made with little more than brute force at their command and list their creations as wonders of the world. By contrast, I doubt this building will ever be seen as anything very special by future generations. Called "The Building of the Third Century" it has "green" attributes. I see it as a pleasant and unremarkable building wedged between other unremarkable buildings on this crowded hospital campus. The work of those who built it, though, has dignity and grace. I was glad to be a witness.
