De dijk is aangelegd als zeewering nadat de oorsrponkelijke duinen weggeslagen waren. Door erosie kalven de duinen langs de kust steeds verder af, de dijk steekt daardoor steeds meer uit in zee.

The dike was built as a seawall after the primal dunes were washed away. Because of erosion the dunes decrease in size, therefore the sewall sticks more and more out into the sea.

O edifÃcio situado entre a muralha fernandina e o Largo Primeiro de Dezembro está a ser renovado desde 2016, esperando-se que em 2018 volte a retomar a função de Centro de Saúde da Batalha / Unidade de Saúde Familiar Rainha D. Amélia, abandonada em 2008. Apesar de recentemente ter albergado serviços de saúde, uma instituição de cariz social, e outros organismos públicos, este edifÃcio (que é Património do Estado) nasceu na primeira metade do século XV como Real Mosteiro de Santa Clara, mais conhecido por Convento de Santa Clara.

Nederland, Friesland, Gemeente Wonseradeel, 28-04-2010; begin van de Afsluitdijk vanuit Friesland, met Kornwerderzand, gezien naar het westen (naar Noord-Holland).
Aanleg van de dijk vormde onderdeel Zuiderzeewerken, initiatief van ingenieur Cornelis Lely.

Road work ... for most parts of our trip the roads were well maintained, but there were also some rough parts. We think the roads got a major upgrade recently that's still going on.

Actually, I can't tell whether that's a hoarding, a hut, or a storage container. Definitely zebra-striped, though.
I Geo-Tagged these photographs so that you can identified where I visited. My photographs show a very narrow road that one needs to walk from Laughanstown Tram Stop to get to the old church and graveyard at Tully. As you can see from my photographs some people are are using the area as a rubbish dump. There are signs of extensive construction work under way in the area but some elements have the appearance of a stalled project.
If you visit this road take care as there is a surprising amount of traffic.
Laughanstown: The spelling of this name has varied considerably over time, and in some periods was almost indistinguishable from Loughlinstown, the name of which also varied. The spelling Laughanstown was adopted and fixed at the
time of the original Ordnance Survey in the 1830s. However, the evidence suggests that the name used locally was Lehaunstown, and this was noted by the Boundary Survey in the 1820s. Local usage did not change as a result
of the Ordnance Survey’s attempt to impose a new spelling.
