London Heliport (ICAO: EGLW), previously called Battersea Heliport and currently known officially as the Edmiston London Heliport for sponsorship reasons, is London's only licensed heliport. The facility, which was built by W. & C. French and opened on 23 April 1959, is located in Battersea on the south bank of the River Thames, 3 NM (5.6 km; 3.5 mi) southwest of Westminster Bridge and between Wandsworth Bridge and Battersea Railway Bridge. Prior to the official opening, the first aircraft to land at the heliport on 8 April 1959, was a Westland Widgeon Series 2, owned by Westland Aircraft.

 

The heliport, once owned by Westland and then Harrods, is a very small site, making use of a jetty to provide a helipad for take-off and landing, and onshore parking for three to four aircraft, depending upon their size. The heliport provides landing, parking and refuelling services between 08:00 and 21:00 (flights are permitted between 07:00 and 23:00), albeit parking is normally restricted to smaller helicopter categories.

 

Flight conditions and procedures at the heliport prescribe a circuit height 1,000 ft (305 m) above the Thames, in an extended figure-of-eight over the water, to seek to minimise noise pollution for residents in the area and to constrain flight operations to over the river, away from the built-up area. Ground running of rotors is restricted to a maximum of five minutes for the same reason.

The day starts at 7:30 am with a 40-minute drive to the Punta Bandera dock to take a boat on Lago Argentino to Upsala Glacier, a large valley glacier on the eastern side of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Its higher portion lies in a disputed territory between Chile and Argentina. The glacier terminus is at Upsala channel of Lago Argentino. The Upsala Glacier is well known for its rapid retreat that has been ongoing since the glacier was first documented in 1810. The glacier showed almost continual recession up until 1999. The acceleration in ice motion during the two decades preceding 1999 may have been augmented by the release of backstress when the glacier retreated beyond the islands in Brazo Upsala. Another period of even faster retreat started in 2008. As of 2018 Upsala Glacier has retreated to such degree that it no longer constrains its tributary Bertacchi Glacier. The boat then drops us off at the Estancia Cristina, an Argentine cattle and sheep ranch located inside Los Glaciares National Park in Santa Cruz Province. It is here that we take a 4x4 for 45 minutes up a mountain, stop and continue up for another 20 minutes, reaching the summit around 12:30 pm. The ranch was founded in 1914 by Joseph Percival Masters, an Englishman who came to Patagonia with his wife in 1900; Estancia Cristina is named for Masters' daughter Cristina. Located on the coast of Brazo Cristina, a northern channel of Lago Argentino, Estancia Cristina still keeps the history of the Masters family alive. Its lodge has 20 rooms distributed over 5 buildings and it his here that we had lunch followed by a presentation of the traditional Mate, an Argentinean tea and a tour of the ranch. We then take the boat back to Punta Bandera and arrive back at the hotel at 8:00 pm.

Question: Your thoughts on the news that the US is planning a war against China by, or before, the end of this decade?

 

Answer: I don't think the US is planning to war against China, but here's the so now we're getting into a fine line here. We are preparing to fight China there's no doubt about that.

 

General Berger, The comedy of the Marine corps, is all but acknowledged that he is restructuring the Marine corps so that he can get resources adequate to the task of waging amphibious operations against China in the South China Sea.

 

That's become his mission. I mean he's taken serious, he got rid of tanks. He got rid of military police. He got rid because he said we're getting rid of all the legacy stuff that we don't need and were going to restructure reimagine warfare so we can fight the Chinese in this new environment. But that's the way he explains that is what he's been tasked to do.

 

If you read the National Security strategy and the National defense strategy, it instructs the Marine corps to be prepared to carry out specific operations in the South China Sea against the Chinese opponent. If you're the comedy of the Marine corps, it's not that you're you believe that's going to be War. That's your job. Your job is to answer and he said for years we have failed to meet our duty because we're married to legacy systems and we're like, well Marines always had this, "do we need it today?"

 

I mean there was a time when they had horse cavalry. We always had horse cavalry but we don't need them anymore so we got rod of horse cavalry.

 

Now, Marines have tanks, maybe we don't need them. Maybe tanks isn't what we need when we're fighting the Chinese in the South China Sea.

 

The Air Force has been given certain requirements to do certain things so I think the army too. Everybody has been told to prepare for the potential of a conflict but official US policy actually constrains us from doing this even though Joe Biden has set at least four times recently that we will come to the aid of Taiwan if attacked by China.

 

We actually can't plan for that because that would be a violation of the one China policy and all the different continued contingencies that are attached to that.

 

So I can't say that will actively planning for a war. What I can say is that people are preparing for war and then we have some idiots like General Minahan, the commander of air mobility Commander Air Force general who just straights out writes a memorandum and says his gut feeling, I mean not a professional intelligence assessment. It's my gut feeling that we're going to be at war with China to come 2025.

 

Okay General. It's not your mandate. You don't get to make that assessment. It's the defense intelligence agency's job. Your job is to put people on airplanes and flying from point A to point B. But then he turns around he says he's and I want all my people who are supposed to qualify on pistols I want you to take a pistol and fire a clip.

 

Clip, really, General, clip? It's called magazines. We don't call them clips. But clip into your target 7 meters and aim for the head? What's the last time you qualified General because that's not how you qualify turn around you don't empty a magazine into the head. But my point is you have this kind of irresponsible rhetoric that it makes people begin to think that maybe the United States is in fact planning for war against China but you know every time we war game it in Newport, Rhode Island where the naval war college is, we lose.

 

We think our ships are going to actually be able to approach Taiwan, none of our ships will make it anywhere near Taiwan, they will be sunk several hundred kilometers short of Taiwan by the Chinese missiles that are very accurate and cannot be shot down anything we have. Our airplanes won't get anywhere close because of Chinese air defense etc. The Chinese are going to swamp Taiwan with millions of men hundreds of thousands of men coming in before we can even begin to mobilize. You know, our war plan for Korea involves us mobilizing between 400 and 900,000 personnel and then shipping them over to to the Korean peninsula. We have a war plan for that. We don't have a war plan for Taiwan because legally we're not allowed to have one so we have no troops earmarked. It's not like you can say let's take the Korean War plan and just shift that to Taiwan. The problem is all those forces are earmarked for Korea where there's a real threat called North Korea up there. That means we have nothing left for North Korea. We can't fight a war against Taiwan right now. I'm just telling you straight up, we can't do it. If any general that thinks we can should be institutionalized for being insane.

De la nada vida a la nada muerte is the largest of his Running V paintings—a set of large, monochromatic striped pictures whose titles derive from colloquial Spanish expressions. The length and mellifluous sound of this work’s title, which literally means 'From life nothing to death nothing,' coincides with the rising and falling visual cadences of the painting. The two-dimensional surface, which appears as if it might continue into infinity, consists of 20 parallel lines and seems to alternately project from and recede into the wall. Although Stella’s rigorously calibrated surface, immaculate execution, and use of monochromatic gold pigment temper this painting, they barely constrain its kinetic exuberance." (exhibit text)

MDC-T PORTSMOUTH BRANCH hold first Meeting for 2018

 

The MDC-T Portsmouth branch held its first branch meeting for the year 2018 on Saturday 26 January 2018.The meeting occurred in the wake of an avalanche of political events and developments in Zimbabwe. This kind of meeting is a branch calendar event which takes place after every two months. All branch members are expected to attend. The purpose of a branch meeting like this is to among other things, conduct party business which necessarily include collection of membership subscription, plan and organise party activities such as fund raising and awareness demistrations etc. Important reports such as the Chaimans and Treasurer's are also presented during this meeting.

 

There was a vibrant debate on the subject of sustainable growth of the party. This took place.immediately after the Chairman's opening address. Contributing speakers included Mr Banda, Mr Waretsa, Mr Piyo Choga(Chairman) , Mr Kaziboni, the Mrs Zvarevashe and Mrs Mbofana.All the speakers explored possible ways of how to grow our party. Mr Matewu was also afforded the opportunity to contribute on how to grow and improve our party membership in the diaspora

 

Mr Choga presented the Chairman's branch report which depicted a fairly healthy state of affairs in terms of subscriptions, membership and recruitment. He still encouragef members to maintain the momentum as regards subscription payments.

 

The Treasurer's report was delayed because Mr Masunda(treasurer) would attend the meeting later.

 

Mr Matewu presented an exhaustive report on the current situaition in Zimbabwe as regards the challenges, constrains and progress on the Biometric Voter registration exercise and the the MDC Alliance coalition.

MOUNT EGERTON

Aubrite-anomalous

(Metal-rich, light-REE-enriched)

 

The first fragments of this unusually metal-rich, unbrecciated enstatite achondrite were found by an Australian prospector, with subsequent recoveries bringing the total combined weight to ~22 kg. Mount Egerton is a very weathered meteorite containing minor amounts of Si-bearing metal both as a host phase and as inclusions within a predominant brown-stained enstatite phase. The meteorite is composed primarily of cm-sized enstatite crystals with inhomogeneously distributed FeNi-metal composing ~21 wt%—a large abundance for any aubrite. Minor abundances of diopside and various sulfides are present (Cr-bearing troilite, brezinaite, alabandite); notably, Mount Egerton contains no feldspar (Watters and Prinz, 1980).

 

The metal in Mount Egerton exhibits a very fine pseudo-octahedrite pattern upon etching due to the presence of the Fe–Ni–P-silicide perryite. Perryite only occurs in highly reduced meteorites in which pure magnesian silicates are incorporated in a low-Ni metal host. Small realms of schreibersite are present in the metal phase. In contrast to the metal in the main-group aubrites, the metal in Mount Egerton exhibits a mostly chondritic highly siderophile element (HSE) pattern similar to that of enstatite chondrites, particularly that of EL chondrite metal (van Acken et al., 2010; Humayun, 2010; van Acken et al., 2012). Although it has been suggested that Mt. Egerton might represent a sampling of the core–mantle boundary of the aubrite parent body (Watters and Prinz, 1980), the unfractionated composition of the metal nodules are inconsistent with an origin from a differentiated core (Barrat et al., 2016). Conversely, the siderophile element pattern (enriched in compatible siderophiles) of Mount Egerton metal suggests that it could represent a residue formed from crystallization of a high degree partial melt (van Acken et al., 2010; Humayun, 2010).

 

The metal in Mount Egerton and the anomalous iron meteorite Horse Creek (as well as the anomalous irons LEW 85369, LEW 88055, and LEW 88631) has been described as being compositionally similar (i.e., having complementary HSE patterns in metal) to metal in the anomalous enstatite achondrite NWA 2526, a partial melt residue (after ~20% partial melt extraction) containing ~10–15% metal (Keil and Bischoff, 2008; Humayun et al., 2009; M. Humayun, 2010). Along with the similar partial melt residue Itqiy, these meteorites might share a common origin on an E chondrite-like parent body unique from the Shallowater, EH, EL, and main-group aubrite parent bodies (Keil and Bischoff, 2008). Horse Creek is composed of Si-bearing (2.5 wt%) metal with a perryite component; this is similar to the Si content in host metal in Mount Egerton of 2.03 wt% which also contains perryite. Mount Egerton and Horse Creek also have similar W-isotopic compositions which is unlike that of other aubrites (Barrat et al., 2016). The close similarities shown by Mount Egerton and Horse Creek (and some other aubrites) in trace element abundances, compatible siderophile element enrichments, and Si content of metal, have led some to conclude that Horse Creek is genetically related to aubrites.

 

Precise trace element and isotopic analyses of a broad sampling of aubrites was conducted by Barrat et al. (2016). They ascertained that all aubrites in the study have identical O-isotopic compositions (considering a degree of contamination in Cumberland Falls and Larned) with a high level of Δ17O homogeneity, consistent with an early stage of extensive melting on the aubrite parent body(ies), possibly involving a magma ocean. However, both Mount Egerton and Larned exhibit significant light-REE enrichments compared to the other aubrites, which have light-REE depletions. In addition, the negative Eu anomalies in pyroxenes from Mount Egerton and Larned are less extreme than in the other aubrites. A further difference between main-group aubrites and the Mount Egerton and Larned aubrites can be seen in the siderophile element contents of metal; as described above, these two meteorites contain metal that is much less fractionated than that in other aubrites. In consideration of these differences, Barrat et al. (2016) concluded that Mount Egerton, Horse Creek, Larned, and possibly NWA 2526, likely represent a separate parent body from that of the main-group of aubrites.

 

In their study of iron meteorite exposure histories, Welten et al. (2008) found that Horse Creek exhibits a complex exposure history consisting of two stages. During the first stage of irradiation, which involved high shielding at a depth of ~60 cm in an object >2 m in diameter, cosmogenic noble gas data indicate a CRE age of 100 (+40/–30) m.y., placing it at the high end of the aubrite range. A second stage irradiation lasting ~1 m.y. occurred at a depth of 5–10 cm on a 30–50 cm diameter body. The investigators argue that the cosmogenic radionuclide and noble gas data for Horse Creek are consistent with that of debris ejected by a minor impact on a km-sized near-Earth object (NEO), which was followed by its rapid delivery to Earth. A possible source object for the Horse Creek meteorite is the Earth-crossing asteroid 3103 Eger, itself possibly derived from a larger main belt object.

 

Current spectral studies link the aubrites to a few near-Earth Apollo asteroids, specifically 3103 Eger and 434 Hungaria (Kelley and Gaffey, 2002). These two high-albedo, iron-free asteroids are composed of an enstatite-like silicate, and are of the appropriate size to make them primary candidates for the aubrite source body. Further evidence has been compiled that is consistent with 3103 Eger being the aubrite source body. For example, the time of day in which aubrites have fallen constrains the orbit to one similar to that of Eger. In addition, the long cosmic-ray exposure age of aubrites is consistent with a stable residence on a near-Earth asteroid that has a long-lived orbit, similar to that of Eger. Moreover, the orbital parameters derived for Norton County match those of Eger better than all other orbits. Asteroid 3103 Eger was probably once a member of the Hungaria family of asteroids located in the innermost asteroid belt at 1.9 AU. It was subsequently ejected into an Earth-crossing orbit. Notably, the asteroid 2867 Steins has recently been studied by the Rosetta spacecraft. It was found to have an albedo and spectral properties consistent with those of an aubrite in having an abundance of CaS or oldhamite (Abell et al., 2008).

 

Mount Egerton has a cosmic-ray exposure age of 28 (±4) m.y., which is among the lowest of all the aubrites. Cosmogenic production rates indicate that it also had a small pre-atmospheric diameter of ~60 cm. Continued searches of the area have resulted in the recovery of thousands of additional small fragments of this aubrite for researchers and collectors alike. The specimens shown above are a cm-sized 2.7 g metallic fragment similar in composition to the iron meteorite Horse Creek, and a 1.2 g fragment of enstatite silicate devoid of all metal.

For the current VPC photo challenge -- "the exposure triangle." As stated, the challenge is to balance the exposure triangle (ISO, aperture, shutter speed) with at least one of the three set manually. Since I almost always shoot in aperture-priority mode already, I decided to constrain myself further by shooting in manual mode.

 

For this little photo session I was hoping to just train myself to pay attention to my camera's light meter, thinking I would mostly get pictures that were horribly over/under-exposed, but I was pleasantly surprised ... this image is straight out of the camera, and I am very pleased with how it captured the shades of blue in Pip's coat.

 

So, my thought process in taking this picture:

 

ISO was left at 100, since it was a nice spring day there was no reason to go any higher

 

Aperture was my next decision -- I was using my 70-300 zoom lens because I was thinking the dogs would mostly be running around chasing each other and I'd need the long lens when they were half a pasture away from me. Thinking I'd mostly be shooting action, I chose a mid-range (somewhere around 5) aperture for fast shutter speeds but not such shallow depth of field that the dogs would "run out" of the field of focus. It turns out that this range was nice for a bit of background blur with the lens zoomed in and Pip sitting near the minimum focus distance.

 

Shutter speed was pretty slow -- 1/60 sec? Wasn't really paying attention to the actual value so much as the light meter, where I was aiming to over-expose by half a stop or so. This resulted in a good exposure for Pip while the background is quite overexposed.

 

I can hardly believe that Pip sat still long enough for me to work all this out :-)

the recipe is

 

7 oz Flour, 5oz butter (if available unsalted);1/2 oz caster sugar, 21/2 oz ground blanched almonds.

Vanilla sugar to roll the cooked biscuits in. I use caster sugar in which a vannila bean or 3 has been stored for at least a week in an airtight container. I have about a pound on hand as I top it up with sugar as used.

Knead all the ingredients together, after softening the butter so it is pliable. ( i am lazy and actually melt it).

Hand roll the whole mass into about a 4-5 cm piece. Slice of about 2 cm pieces and form these by hand into a long bit, which you then carefully form into a horseshoe shape. Place thes on an ungreased tin and bake at about 210C for about 10 -15 mins until they are pale Beige. Cool them slightly on the tray and then roll them carefully in the vanilla sugar. Constrain yourself and let them cool, before eating them.

As this recipe makes only about 15-17 bikies, I usually double the recipe.

Using eDiva’s Ultrasonic Skin Scrapping Spatula with very light pressure applied on your skin, it inputs effective vibrations to constrain clogged oil and dirt out of the pores clearing out the blackheads from the surface and leaving you with a clean and fairer skin.

Patterns in the layering can also serve as a record of climate, further constraining the type of environment in which this feature formed, and shedding light on the history of this stunning landscape.

The line immediately south of New Mills Central packs in a series of civil engineering structures worthy of a restrained space model railway. This is because the river valleys of the Goyt and the Sett did constrain engineering choices. Looking south towards New Mills South Junction from Church Road - The Co-op occupies the site of the former Midland Railway Goods Shed and sidings in New Mills.

When under time constrains and/or wanting to keep travel costs under control, one can always find ways to connect with nature within a short distance from urban centers. Here, with past year’s images I am sort of giving a heads up as to what one might discover along the Rideau Canal.

Angela’s ability to maintain respect for traditions while defining her own take on Filipino-American lifestyle reminds me of a pioneer. In this collection of photographs, she looks either at a distance – looking past norms that could be constraining – or directly at the viewer – respectfully but reasonably contending practices.

In the photo where the viewer sees her back, she points up, asking the viewer to consider holistic circumstances.

In the photos where she is taking a definite step forward, her hands are either closed, palms open, or pointing, representing decision-making in life. Decisions require positions of reflection as well as a period of experimentation before either resuming a previous position or shifting into a new one; hence the center of mass balancing positions in the lunges.

The last group of photos represents a restful period where she is standing, with arms up, as if stretching or testing the environment. Pioneering is never finished but periods of rest are also constructive for future pioneering.

Such pipe bridges are common features of railways but are rarely modelled.

Unlike his early work, Richardson used a symmetrical arrangement for the Courthouse. This view shows that he did not similarly constrain himself on the Jail.
