The human brain consumes roughly 20% of the sugars we consume, despite being roughly the size of your fist. Thus, energy metabolism constrains the development and functional capacity of the brain. In addition, defects in metabolism are found in many brain disorders. The study for which this image was made utilized computational models of human brain metabolism to better understand metabolic defects in Alzheimer’s disease. This study demonstrated that metabolism was significantly impaired in even seemingly healthy cells in brain regions that are more susceptible to damage in Alzheimer’s disease.
Moreover, this study was able to identify a gene which may explain why some cells die in Alzheimer’s disease why others do not. Thus, brain metabolism shapes and places limits on human brain function in health and disease.

For the current VPC photo challenge -- "the exposure triangle." As stated, the challenge is to balance the exposure triangle (ISO, aperture, shutter speed) with at least one of the three set manually. Since I almost always shoot in aperture-priority mode already, I decided to constrain myself further by shooting in manual mode.
For this little photo session I was hoping to just train myself to pay attention to my camera's light meter, thinking I would mostly get pictures that were horribly over/under-exposed, but I was pleasantly surprised ... this image is straight out of the camera, and I am very pleased with how it captured the shades of blue in Pip's coat.
So, my thought process in taking this picture:
ISO was left at 100, since it was a nice spring day there was no reason to go any higher
Aperture was my next decision -- I was using my 70-300 zoom lens because I was thinking the dogs would mostly be running around chasing each other and I'd need the long lens when they were half a pasture away from me. Thinking I'd mostly be shooting action, I chose a mid-range (somewhere around 5) aperture for fast shutter speeds but not such shallow depth of field that the dogs would "run out" of the field of focus. It turns out that this range was nice for a bit of background blur with the lens zoomed in and Pip sitting near the minimum focus distance.
Shutter speed was pretty slow -- 1/60 sec? Wasn't really paying attention to the actual value so much as the light meter, where I was aiming to over-expose by half a stop or so. This resulted in a good exposure for Pip while the background is quite overexposed.
I can hardly believe that Pip sat still long enough for me to work all this out :-)

the recipe is
7 oz Flour, 5oz butter (if available unsalted);1/2 oz caster sugar, 21/2 oz ground blanched almonds.
Vanilla sugar to roll the cooked biscuits in. I use caster sugar in which a vannila bean or 3 has been stored for at least a week in an airtight container. I have about a pound on hand as I top it up with sugar as used.
Knead all the ingredients together, after softening the butter so it is pliable. ( i am lazy and actually melt it).
Hand roll the whole mass into about a 4-5 cm piece. Slice of about 2 cm pieces and form these by hand into a long bit, which you then carefully form into a horseshoe shape. Place thes on an ungreased tin and bake at about 210C for about 10 -15 mins until they are pale Beige. Cool them slightly on the tray and then roll them carefully in the vanilla sugar. Constrain yourself and let them cool, before eating them.
As this recipe makes only about 15-17 bikies, I usually double the recipe.
COSMOS-Web: An Overview of the JWST Cosmic Origins Survey
We propose the COSMOS-Web Survey, an ambitious treasury program to map a contiguous 0.6 deg^2 area with deep NIRCam imaging in 4 filters and a 0.2 deg^2 deep MIRI survey in parallel. COSMOS-Web will accomplish the following science goals that simply cannot be done with any other existing or currently planned survey:
I) revolutionize our understanding of reionization's spatial distribution, environments, and drivers at early stages by pioneering the detection of thousands of galaxies in the epoch of reionization (EoR, z=6-11),
II) identify hundreds of the rarest quiescent galaxies in the first 2 Gyr (z > 4) to place stringent constraints on the formation of the Universe’s most massive (M*>10^10Msun) galaxies, and
III) directly measure the evolution of the stellar mass to halo mass relation (SMHR) out to z~2.5 and its variance with galaxies' star formation histories and morphologies.
COSMOS-Web is designed to leave no stone unturned for deep, wide extragalactic surveys – eliminating cosmic variance and resulting in an order of magnitude more early Universe galaxies than all other Hubble+Webb surveys combined, thus significantly constraining the shape of the bright end of the UV luminosity function and mapping the early cosmic web. It will be the primary legacy dataset from Webb for the extragalactic community by providing quick public releases of multi-band, high-resolution near-IR imaging of half a million galaxies (and an unprecedented 32,000 in the midIR) thus enabling innumerable legacy science projects.
Conducting this next level ambitious survey now is crucial given the finite lifetime of Webb and the need to plan swift follow-up of its unique discoveries.

Original caption: This striking view of layered sediments on Mars was captured by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter’s Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System, CaSSIS, on 2 October 2018. The image, which covers an area 25 x 7 km wide, focuses on a layered mound in Juventae Chasma, just north of the iconic Valles Marineris.
The features in the chasmata around Valles Marineris have been well studied by Mars orbiters, including ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). The CRISM instrument on MRO detected a significant amount of sulphates at the base of the mound shown in this image – a composition that points to the presence of water in the distant past.
The new image from CaSSIS reveals the beautiful sedimentary layers in high resolution, allowing scientists to explore the correlation between colour as seen by the camera, and composition as determined by previous measurements to better understand how these minerals were deposited in the area. Patterns in the layering can also serve as a record of climate, further constraining the type of environment in which this feature formed, and shedding light on the history of this stunning landscape.

The line immediately south of New Mills Central packs in a series of civil engineering structures worthy of a restrained space model railway. This is because the river valleys of the Goyt and the Sett did constrain engineering choices. Looking south towards New Mills South Junction from Church Road - The Co-op occupies the site of the former Midland Railway Goods Shed and sidings in New Mills.
When under time constrains and/or wanting to keep travel costs under control, one can always find ways to connect with nature within a short distance from urban centers. Here, with past year’s images I am sort of giving a heads up as to what one might discover along the Rideau Canal.

Angela’s ability to maintain respect for traditions while defining her own take on Filipino-American lifestyle reminds me of a pioneer. In this collection of photographs, she looks either at a distance – looking past norms that could be constraining – or directly at the viewer – respectfully but reasonably contending practices.
In the photo where the viewer sees her back, she points up, asking the viewer to consider holistic circumstances.
In the photos where she is taking a definite step forward, her hands are either closed, palms open, or pointing, representing decision-making in life. Decisions require positions of reflection as well as a period of experimentation before either resuming a previous position or shifting into a new one; hence the center of mass balancing positions in the lunges.
The last group of photos represents a restful period where she is standing, with arms up, as if stretching or testing the environment. Pioneering is never finished but periods of rest are also constructive for future pioneering.

There were about five chipmunks running all around me as I sat on a boulder in the sun today. They are sure grateful that the warmer weather is finally coming to Colorado. At one point, I looked down at my side and one was sitting there watching the others along side me - guess he thought it was funny, too! Constraining myself on the number of pictures I am uploading....not sure who was having more fun - me or them!
There's a patch of flowers by the front door that don't bloom until the first frost - they provide some welcome color as the leaves all fall from the trees and the season turns grey.
I went to photograph these last night when it was raining but I didn't have the patience to let my camera and lens get soaked. I cheated this evening and dribbled some water on them to get the water drops. I wish the focus point was 1/2 inch closer to the center of the flower, but otherwise this came out OK. I'm back to using flashlights with towels over them for lighting (how inelegant). A funny thing is that looking at the photo it appears the petals are fore-shortened in the front and back (creating a little bit strange perspective since the center of the flower remains fairly round), but this untrue to an extent, looking at the flower straight on, those petals really are shorter.
I'm kind of looking for negative space/darkness for the current PCA, which I'm finding very difficult. I'm also forcing myself to shoot with the 17-35 because I started to get perhaps a little too much into the wide angle mode, and I was kind of getting gimmicky with it so, I want to constrain myself so I think about composition more.
They say Flickr is all pictures of flowers and puppies so, at least I'm keeping the status quo.
The "opposition effect" can be seen in this image of Saturn's B ring. The
bright spot occurs where the angle between the spacecraft, the Sun and the
rings is near zero. Studies of the opposition effect on Saturn's rings may
help scientists constrain some of the properties of ring particles, such
as their sizes and spatial distribution.
Another recently released image from Cassini also shows this interesting
effect of viewing geometry (see PIA07543).
The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft
wide-angle camera on June 26, 2005, at a distance of approximately
478,000 kilometers (297,000 miles) from Saturn. The image scale is 3
kilometers (2 miles) per pixel.
The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European
Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages
the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. The
Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and
assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space Science
Institute, Boulder, Colo.

I bike on the playa when I saw this sculpture. I realized that relationship is about freedom and love. The first one allows the second to express itself.
In the desert, when you leave 40,000 people on their own, with no financial constrain and gentleness as main way to relate to each other’s...a lot of things happen.
I've been pretty inactive in photography for sometime now. Lots of reasons/excuses. And I really need to catch up on my 52 weeks so here I am self reflecting in my sleep, to wake up and just try.
Not really satisfied with the composition, didnt come out as I intented but did have a few technical constrains to work with. I might do another one with similiar concept way down the road. Already have a few ideas on how I can improve.

The dark albedo area corresponds to the dark blue streak. It begins at a splat that is likely yellowish white like it's neighbors. And look at those other splatty features as well! The large flat-floored crater at the upper right ("Brachiopod Crater") that has a small indent from another impact is pretty distinctive in the global map mosaic and other images of Vesta. I've been using that as a identification feature. It is pretty average looking in the false-color image. But look at the detail around the large crater south of it. WOW! Lotsa different stuff corresponding to different materials (composition, grain size, etc.)
Also note that the grooves do not show up in the false-color image. They blend with the "average terrain" (thus constraining the ring hypotheses).

Original caption: The protostellar object OH 339.88-1.26, which lies 8 900 light-years from Earth in the constellation Ara, lurks in this dust-filled image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. Winding lanes of dark dust thread through this image, which is also studded with bright stars crowned with criss-crossing diffraction spikes. The dark vertical streak at the centre of this image hides OH 339.88-1.26, which is an astrophysical maser. A maser — which is an acronym for “microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation” — is essentially a laser that produces coherent light at microwave wavelengths. Such objects can occur naturally in astrophysical situations, in environments ranging from the north pole of Jupiter to star-forming regions such as the one pictured here. This image comes from a set of Hubble observations that peer into the hearts of regions where massive stars are born to constrain the nature of massive protostars and test theories of their formation. Astronomers turned to Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 to explore five intermediate-mass protostars at infrared wavelengths. The Hubble observations were supported by other state-of-the-art observatories including ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. ALMA is composed of 66 moveable high-precision antennas which can be arranged over distances of up to 16 kilometres on a plateau perched high in the Chilean Andes. Further data were contributed by the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), which is a telescope that — until recently — operated out of a converted 747 aircraft. MDC-T PORTSMOUTH BRANCH hold first Meeting for 2018
The MDC-T Portsmouth branch held its first branch meeting for the year 2018 on Saturday 26 January 2018.The meeting occurred in the wake of an avalanche of political events and developments in Zimbabwe. This kind of meeting is a branch calendar event which takes place after every two months. All branch members are expected to attend. The purpose of a branch meeting like this is to among other things, conduct party business which necessarily include collection of membership subscription, plan and organise party activities such as fund raising and awareness demistrations etc. Important reports such as the Chaimans and Treasurer's are also presented during this meeting.
There was a vibrant debate on the subject of sustainable growth of the party. This took place.immediately after the Chairman's opening address. Contributing speakers included Mr Banda, Mr Waretsa, Mr Piyo Choga(Chairman) , Mr Kaziboni, the Mrs Zvarevashe and Mrs Mbofana.All the speakers explored possible ways of how to grow our party. Mr Matewu was also afforded the opportunity to contribute on how to grow and improve our party membership in the diaspora
Mr Choga presented the Chairman's branch report which depicted a fairly healthy state of affairs in terms of subscriptions, membership and recruitment. He still encouragef members to maintain the momentum as regards subscription payments.
The Treasurer's report was delayed because Mr Masunda(treasurer) would attend the meeting later.
Mr Matewu presented an exhaustive report on the current situaition in Zimbabwe as regards the challenges, constrains and progress on the Biometric Voter registration exercise and the the MDC Alliance coalition.
