Cardamom refers to several plants of the similar genera Elettaria and Amomum in the ginger family Zingiberaceae. Both genera are native to India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bhutan; they are recognised by their small seed pods, triangular in cross-section and spindle-shaped, with a thin, papery, outer shell and small black seeds. Guatemala is the biggest producer and exporter of cardamom in the world, followed by India. Some other countries, such as Sri Lanka, have also begun to cultivate it. Elettaria pods are light green, while Amomum pods are larger and dark brown.
It is the world's third-most expensive spice by weight, outstripped in market value only by saffron and vanilla.
Cardamom has a strong, unique taste, with an intensely aromatic, resinous fragrance. Black cardamom has a distinctly more smokey, though not bitter, aroma, with a coolness some consider similar to mint.
It is a common ingredient in Indian cooking and is often used in baking in Nordic countries, such as in the Finnish sweet bread pulla or in the Scandinavian Christmas bread Julekake. In the Middle East, green cardamom powder is used as a spice for sweet dishes, as well as traditional flavouring in coffee and tea.
In South Asia, green cardamom is often used in traditional Indian sweets and in masala chai (spiced tea). Black cardamom is sometimes used in garam masala for curries. It is occasionally used as a garnish in basmati rice and other dishes.
Green cardamom is broadly used in South Asia to treat infections in teeth and gums, to prevent and treat throat troubles, congestion of the lungs and pulmonary tuberculosis, inflammation of eyelids, and digestive disorders. It also is used to break up kidney and gall stones, and was reportedly used as an antidote for both snake and scorpion venoms. Amomum is used as a spice and as an ingredient in traditional medicine in systems of the traditional Chinese medicine in China, in Ayurveda in India, Pakistan, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Among other species, varieties, and cultivars, Amomum villosum cultivated in China, Laos, and Vietnam is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat stomach problems, constipation, dysentery, and other digestion problems. Tsaoko cardamom, Amomum tsao-ko, is cultivated in Yunnan and northwest Vietnam, both for medicinal purposes and as a spice.

Anna was home sick today. We had a rough night and I knew something was wrong so I took her to the pediatrician this morning. She has strep throat. While I was there, I told them about Anna's upcoming MRI and abdominal ultrasound (Tuesday) which is happening because of her abnormal blood test and bone scan results from our visit with the endocrinologist in December. Morris was badly hurt sometime in his life before he came to HART. Here what his foster mom said in an email to me: "The right hip is fractured at the femoral neck. That has to be resolved first and foremost. This is critical as his bone is currently stabbing him on a regular basis. The left hip was previous fractured at the femoral neck but has healed at an awkward angle. Not critical, but will need to be fixed at some point. His pelvis was fractured at some point and has healed improperly, causing it to be narrower. He *could* have constipation issues in the future, though he does not seem to now."

HART was approached the week before Christmas 2010 about taking in a litter of kittens. These kittens were living outside under a shed. No further information was necessary. Of course HART would take them!
It became very clear very quickly that one of the little boys, Morris, had some funky things going on with his hind end. He got around just fine, but his gait was weird and he didn't look quite right when standing. When it came time to have Morris neutered, HART asked the veterinarians to take a look at what was going on with his hind end. Fearing neuropathy, the foster mom waited anxiously for the results. The news she got was far more heartbreaking than neuropathy.
At some point in Morris' life, before he was found living under the shed with his siblings, Morris had both hips and his pelvis broken. His pelvis has healed, though narrower than it should be, and one of his hips has healed, though the joint is not in the socket with bone, it is held in place with muscle only. His other hip is still broken. Every time Morris walks, his bone stabs him, causing him significant pain. Each time he comes towards human companionship, the pain in his hip causes him to retreat, associating the pain with humans.
At this point, the doctors are recommending a double femoral head osteotomy. While Morris will be immobilized briefly, in the long run, it's better to have both hips operated on at the same time as it will help him heal and regain normal use of his legs. His surgery will cost approximately $3000, including after care. HART wants to help Morris have a long and pain free life. Can you help us reach that goal?

Curly dock is an alien species from Europe.
The species name, crispus, means "curly" in Latin. The word "dock" describes the solid part of an animal's tail, and "to dock" a tail means to remove it. Doberman Pincher and Cocker Spaniel's tails are commonly docked. Undesirable plant species (weeds) are also called dock, perhaps because people would "dock the weeds" by cutting and removing them.
The plant has been used since 500 B.C. and has many medicinal properties, most of which are based in the plant's roots. A poultice of the roots has been used to treat iron-deficiency anemia for centuries. It's also a blood purifier and liver decongestant because the poultice stimulates the liver to produce bile. It remedies constipation while strengthening the colon, was employed to treat syphilis, and the powered roots were used as a tooth powder.
Curly dock acts as an astringent to treat wounds and bleeding. Application of a dock compress helps with skin irritations and rubbing the leaves on your skin can relieve the itchy symptoms of a stinging nettle rash.
The seeds were once roasted and used as a coffee substitute (hence the name Coffee-weed).
A wild riot of colour as thousands celebrate London's Gay Pride Parade 2011. London 02.07.2011
This Saturday July 2nd 2011 saw the explosion of colour and fabulous carnival/cabaret fancy-dress which is the annual Gay Pride parade passing through the packed London streets as many Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender groups representing special interest campaigning groups, trade unions, the armed forces, police service, christian groups and several of London's gay bars and clubs celebrated their sexuality and diversity, watched and cheered on by tens of thousands of enthusiastic members of the public.
The days celebrations were purposefully snubbed by London mayor Boris Johnson much to the anger and irritation of many, since Mr. Johnson is expected to show support for all Londoners. However, his greatest opponent in the upcoming mayoral elections, former London Mayor Ken Livingstone was to be seen - as always - at the head of the parade, accompanied by human and gay rights activist Peter Tatchell.
Gone was the nervous tension of the original trail-blazing Gay Pride marches of the late 1970's and early 80's, as a new generation of gay people enjoy far greater public acceptance of their lifestyle in what feel like more enlightened times. What is taken for granted now was fought for in the past by courageous activists and their political supporters who wanted to see an end to the homophobic bigotry and institutionalised discrimination which used to be the universal public position towards them.
Having said that, there was a demonstration set up at the bottom of Waterloo Place by a group of so-called Christians from the Baptist Church - some of whom looked like they had been time-warped directly from the 1950's, complete with emotional constipation - who spent the entire afternoon insulting and demeaning all gay people and anyone who accepts homosexuality as a part of the enormously wide spectrum of human sexuality by cherry-picking snippets from the Bible completely without proper context, and generally showing themselves up to be nothing more than a bunch of hate-filled bigots who hilariously claim to love the people they were standing there belittling.

After the parade made its way from Portland Place to Trafalgar Square, the marchers and bystanders alike dispersed into Soho for some serious street partying which lasted late into the night. There was a main stage in Trafalgar Square which hosted a long rosta of minor-league pop and dance acts during the afternoon, though oddly this year there were no big-name headliners, and another Dance Stage in Soho Square which featured a great line-up of club DJs.
