1912 postcard of Bishopbriggs Cross. It seems like half the population has come out to pose for the camera. Some of the children have their bare feet. There's a hillarious message on the other side, from Steven, saying he can't find a girlfriend in Scotland and complaining he's got terrible constipation! I hope he didn't use that in his chat-up line. Or maybe he did, hence the result!
Everlax is the ideal support for our body, because it prevents our bowels to become lazy and that excess fat to accumulate in adipose tissue also helps to strengthen our nerves intimately linked in the digestive processes and related nerve problems like colitis and some cases of heartburn. Everlax tones the liver, which results in bile secretions are adequate for proper digestion.
It is used as an aid to the treatment of:
· Constipation
· Digestion lazy
· Obesity
· Colitis nervous
· Digestive Disorders
Ingredients: Spirulina Algae, Boldo, passionflower, manrrubio, cuachalalate, cascara, prickly pear, papaya.

In the aftermath of the first rain of the season, the parklands near my home are an inviting area to shoot a test roll from my newly CLA'd Kowa/SIX. This machine has a reputation for superior optics and I am not disappointed.
Legend has it that when the first rains soften the parched earth here, mythical ghouls that haunt the local forests surface from the depths. It seems that I have timed my arrival with their emergence!!
This image was taken with a Kowa/SIX medium format film camera using Fujicolor Reala 100 film, scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

This lovely little pic is probably from the 1920s-1930s. It's from a little medical booklet I sold recently.
Best Probiotic Help for Treatment of Irritable Bowel, Digestive Health, Constipation, Problems with Digestion Disorders, IBS Illnesses or Diarrhea after Eating.
As strange as it may seem, John D. Rockerfeller’s Standard Oil Company, known for its dominance in the oil industry, ventured into producing a petroleum product marketed as a remedy for constipation. The product was made by boiling crude petroleum to remove lighter oils, packing what was left in small bottles, and selling it as “Nujol.”
Mineral oil could cause diarrhea and that property of Nujol made it a laxative. But was it safe? Without test results, the ad features bold claims about the product, such as;
“Nujol removes poisons from the system, and gives the tissues of the body a chance to build up and resist disease. . . Nujol is not habit forming . . .
“It is especially fine for young mothers, as it is not absorbed into the system, and therefore in no way affects the child . . .”
Ah, the reassuring trifecta of early advertising: eliminating invisible "poisons," being "non-habit forming," and, of course, safe for everyone—including expectant mothers. It’s fascinating how ads from that era leaned heavily into these comforting claims to ease any hesitations about trying their products. This ad uses visual and rhetorical appeals to sell not just a product but a lifestyle or philosophy.
“The Athlete’s First Principle is to Keep His System Clean.”
The use of what looks like an ancient Greek statue evokes a sense of classical ideals, health, and strength, which aligns well with the message they were promoting. Pairing that with the bold statement about the athlete’s principles gives it an air of authority and timeless wisdom – perfect for convincing consumers back in 1917.
There are plenty of bold claims about not letting your body absorb poisons because anything from a headache to the most serious illness may result from such absorption, as “your doctor will tell you." Statements like that were quite the persuasive tactic, leaning on the authority of medical professionals to bolster trust, even when the science was a bit hazy. The fear of “absorbing poisons” cleverly played on anxieties about health, suggesting that constipation was the lurking villain behind every ailment, from minor discomforts to life-threatening conditions.
The combination of scare tactics about toxins and health risks with the promise of a simple solution like Nujol must have made the ad incredibly persuasive at the time. Nujol was sold as a laxative for many years. A court case from 1927 mentions that by the end of 1927, the company had invested significantly in advertising and had sold millions of bottles. Nujol is still used today as a lubricant laxative to help soften stool and make bowel movements easier.

These have been cropping up all around the Bay Area, including a couple with end-o'-the-world electronic countdowns. Wonder who's paying for this? Maybe they haven't bothered with the mortgage or insurance bills.
I'm still surprised somebody hasn't graff'd a toilet under that poor guy's butt.

These water bottles were much in demand for reasons other than feminine hygiene. Much of the population was chronically constipated. One look at any cookbook from that era will tell you why.
In 1900, life expectancy in the US was about 47 for a man and 50 for a woman. Bad diet was a big factor for those low numbers.

A wild riot of colour as thousands celebrate London's Gay Pride Parade 2011. London 02.07.2011
This Saturday July 2nd 2011 saw the explosion of colour and fabulous carnival/cabaret fancy-dress which is the annual Gay Pride parade passing through the packed London streets as many Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender groups representing special interest campaigning groups, trade unions, the armed forces, police service, christian groups and several of London's gay bars and clubs celebrated their sexuality and diversity, watched and cheered on by tens of thousands of enthusiastic members of the public.
The days celebrations were purposefully snubbed by London mayor Boris Johnson much to the anger and irritation of many, since Mr. Johnson is expected to show support for all Londoners. However, his greatest opponent in the upcoming mayoral elections, former London Mayor Ken Livingstone was to be seen - as always - at the head of the parade, accompanied by human and gay rights activist Peter Tatchell.
Gone was the nervous tension of the original trail-blazing Gay Pride marches of the late 1970's and early 80's, as a new generation of gay people enjoy far greater public acceptance of their lifestyle in what feel like more enlightened times. What is taken for granted now was fought for in the past by courageous activists and their political supporters who wanted to see an end to the homophobic bigotry and institutionalised discrimination which used to be the universal public position towards them.
Having said that, there was a demonstration set up at the bottom of Waterloo Place by a group of so-called Christians from the Baptist Church - some of whom looked like they had been time-warped directly from the 1950's, complete with emotional constipation - who spent the entire afternoon insulting and demeaning all gay people and anyone who accepts homosexuality as a part of the enormously wide spectrum of human sexuality by cherry-picking snippets from the Bible completely without proper context, and generally showing themselves up to be nothing more than a bunch of hate-filled bigots who hilariously claim to love the people they were standing there belittling.
My photos of the Baptists and the crowd's reactions to being assaulted by the pious abuse are already uploaded in my set "Baptists preach intolerance at Gay Pride Parade".
After the parade made its way from Portland Place to Trafalgar Square, the marchers and bystanders alike dispersed into Soho for some serious street partying which lasted late into the night. There was a main stage in Trafalgar Square which hosted a long rosta of minor-league pop and dance acts during the afternoon, though oddly this year there were no big-name headliners, and another Dance Stage in Soho Square which featured a great line-up of club DJs.

Morris was badly hurt sometime in his life before he came to HART. Here what his foster mom said in an email to me: "The right hip is fractured at the femoral neck. That has to be resolved first and foremost. This is critical as his bone is currently stabbing him on a regular basis. The left hip was previous fractured at the femoral neck but has healed at an awkward angle. Not critical, but will need to be fixed at some point. His pelvis was fractured at some point and has healed improperly, causing it to be narrower. He *could* have constipation issues in the future, though he does not seem to now."
Morris's surgeries will cost at least $3000, possibly more. Here is a link to his story on the HART web site. .HART is fund raising for his surgery if you would like to help out. Please do! I did
From the HART web:
HART was approached the week before Christmas 2010 about taking in a litter of kittens. These kittens were living outside under a shed. No further information was necessary. Of course HART would take them!
It became very clear very quickly that one of the little boys, Morris, had some funky things going on with his hind end. He got around just fine, but his gait was weird and he didn't look quite right when standing. When it came time to have Morris neutered, HART asked the veterinarians to take a look at what was going on with his hind end. Fearing neuropathy, the foster mom waited anxiously for the results. The news she got was far more heartbreaking than neuropathy.
At some point in Morris' life, before he was found living under the shed with his siblings, Morris had both hips and his pelvis broken. His pelvis has healed, though narrower than it should be, and one of his hips has healed, though the joint is not in the socket with bone, it is held in place with muscle only. His other hip is still broken. Every time Morris walks, his bone stabs him, causing him significant pain. Each time he comes towards human companionship, the pain in his hip causes him to retreat, associating the pain with humans.
At this point, the doctors are recommending a double femoral head osteotomy. While Morris will be immobilized briefly, in the long run, it's better to have both hips operated on at the same time as it will help him heal and regain normal use of his legs. His surgery will cost approximately $3000, including after care. HART wants to help Morris have a long and pain free life. Can you help us reach that goal?
Thank you,
Homeless Animals Rescue Team & Morris

Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder characterized most commonly by cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. IBS causes a great deal of discomfort and distress, but it does not permanently harm the intestines and does not lead to a serious disease, such as cancer. Colon Hydrotherapy has been a proven method for relieving some of the symptoms associated with IBS. Call or stop into the Chambers Clinics today for more information. bit.ly/U53VMj
(St. Ignatius' Bean)
Named for the patron saint of spiritual retreats and exercises, this small tree supplies us with the emotionally and physically supportive St. Ignatius bean. In homeopathic form, this remedy treats a wide range of symptoms that can be caused by emotional turbulence. Loss of a loved one, trauma (even in the not so recent past), homesickness, broken hearts of all shapes and sizes, long, intense study periods, constant stress, in short any strong emotions that, if repressed can set off a wide array of symptoms in the body.
While it can help bring out suppressed emotions, Ignatia is also helpful in the pangs of grief or trauma - the sleeplessness, bellyaches, and waves of pain that can be the companion of turbulent emotions, and to prevent issues soon after - such as colds due to the strain on the immune system. Ignatia colds can start with a lump in the throat sensation and it’s spasmodic cough is set off by a tickle in the throat. If a fever takes over, an Ignatia type may be quite thirsty or itchy with chills. Some other symptoms may be a headache which feels as if a nail is being driven into the skull and the discomfort is made more intense by lying on the painful side. A sour taste in the mouth, hiccups, upper abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting which is somewhat relieved by eating are other Ignatia signs. Women can complain of uterine cramps during menstruation, constipation due to emotional stress and hemmorhoids.
On the emotional side, Ignatia works especially well with silent grief, though it also helps those at the other extreme-constant crying, fear, fright and anxiety. Ignatia types have a sensitive nervous system so it’s not surprising that their bodies react to emotional stress with twitchings, spasms, a lump in the throat feeling, nervous headaches or insomnia. Nervous debility caused fom loss, living in stressful situations, frustration and disappointment or long, intense periods of study can all be soothed by Ignatia.
If you find yourself constantly thinking about painful situations and you sigh deeply and often, this homeopathic remedy might be of help.
As all disappointed loves know, insomnia or nightmares may be your only choice– until Ignatia. Its symptoms tend to be erratic and spasmodic, they may tighten and release often as the body and mind try to restore balance. Its conditions usually feel better for eating and with warmth and worse with emotional disturbance, coffee and cold fresh air.
Whether natural to the individual or induced by emotions, the people who need Ignatia’s support the most are sensitive, idealistic, and sometimes secretive, whose moods may alternate frequently– tears turning to laughter and back again. They may internalize their feelings so well that only their sighs let you know what is beneath the surface. Over time they can become very defensive, touchy, suspicious, jealous and even rude.
