Information on Texas Persimmons can be found here: aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/extension/fruit/persimmons/pe... .

In Ozark folklore, the severity of the upcoming winter is said to be predictable by slicing a persimmon and observing the cutlery-shaped formation within it. (This is "a myth with no bearing on weather forecasting".) In Vietnam, the fruit is a part of Mid-Autumn Festival offering.

In traditional Chinese medicine the fruit is thought to regulate ch'i.

The raw fruit is used to treat constipation and hemorrhoids, and to stop bleeding. Overconsumption can induce diarrhea, but the cooked fruit is used to treat diarrhea and dysentery; the opposing effects of the raw and cooked fruit are due to its osmotic effect in the raw fruit sugar (causing diarrhea), and the high tannin content of the cooked fruit helping with diarrhea. Like the tomato, it is not considered a "common berry", but is in fact a "true berry" by definition.

Khat consumption induces mild euphoria and excitement. A meta-analysis in The Lancet has stated that khat creates a pleasuring effect to the same degree as ecstasy. Individuals become very talkative under the influence of the drug and may appear to be unrealistic and emotionally unstable. Khat can induce manic behaviors and hyperactivity. Khat is an effective anorectic and its use also results in constipation. Dilated pupils (mydriasis), which are prominent during khat consumption, reflect the sympathomimetic effects of the drug, which are also reflected in increased heart rate and blood pressure. A state of drowsy hallucinations (hypnagogic hallucinations) may result coming down from khat use as well. Withdrawal symptoms that may follow occasional use include mild depression and irritability. Withdrawal symptoms that may follow prolonged khat use include lethargy, mild depression, nightmares, and slight tremor. Long-term use can precipitate the following effects: negative impact on liver function, permanent tooth darkening (of a greenish tinge), susceptibility to ulcers, and diminished sex drive. Those who abuse the drug generally cannot stay without it for more than 4-5 days, feeling tired and having difficulty concentrating. Occasionally a psychosis can result. It resembles a hypermanic state in presentation.

Samara (21 months old)

"It was as though Samara was never meant to eat food. Since the day she was born she had difficulty digesting anything that passed her lips.

Samara was a breast fed baby with acid reflux and then when we began introducing solid foods at around 6months old, Samara began producing a number of symptoms that caused us more concern, such as hives, bloated stomachs, cramping, constipation, diarrhea, constant flatulence, crankiness, sleeping difficulties, face and body rashes, swollen tongue and lips, itchy watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, tickly throat, and behavioral changes and these were only the ones I could read.

As you can imagine, having a baby with all these symptoms was a lot of hard work and a constant worry, I hated seeing Samara so uncomfortable and I was starting to pull my hair out about what I could feed her. She lived on a very bland diet of rice and stewed pears as these seemed to be the only foods that were not affecting her. I began to worry she wasn’t getting enough nutrients and what to do when she started refusing to eat pear or rice anymore!

People looked at me sideways when I said she was allergic/ intolerant to most food groups, especially when I said fruit and vegetables. They didn’t understand the symptoms we had to live with.

I couldn’t do this on my own anymore, so I started doing some research and discovered a treatment on the internet. that had helped others with this problem. I was overjoyed to see they had a clinic in Brisbane. I made an appointment and it was the best move I have ever made. Within a couple of visits Samara was able to eat apples and peas! No more hives, no more cries of pain! I couldn’t believe it, and the best thing is the treatment is pain, stress and needle free!

Samara is now 21months old and with the help of AP we have been able to work our way through the long list of foods that were affecting Samara and she is now able to eat and drink anything she wants! She is able to enjoy food again! I don’t know where we would have been without them!"

With newly applied square side advert for a brand of constipation relief!!!

man, read that and tell me what you think. Feel bad for all the poor individuals that had to take that stuff.

FIBERICH is a 100% psyllium seed husk that comes from the crushed seeds of the plantago ovata plant.

Psyllium is a natural fiber grain, not related to wheat, that yields 60 to 70 percent soluble fiber, eight times that of oat bran.

BENEFITS:

PROMOTES A HEALTHY DIGESTIVE SYSTEM.

FIBERICH helps eliminate constipation and regulates bowel movement. It can be used regularly, as opposed to harsh stimulant laxatives which should only be used occasionally. It is helpful in chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis, hiatus hernia and diabetes.

HELPS LOWER CHOLESTEROL LEVELS.

FIBERICH binds with cholesterol secreted in bile acids and excretes it before it is absorbed in the bloodstream. Taken as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.

HELPS YOU STAY FIT.

FIBERICH adds volume to your meals without adding calories, and helps stave of hunger to keep you feeling full longer. Soluble fiber adds bulk to the stomach and absorbs water to form a gel-like substance which produces softer stools.

AIDS IN BLOOD SUGAR MANAGEMENT.

FIBERICH slows down digestion to allow the gradual release of glucose. The slower the digestion of carbohydrates, the slower the increase in blood sugar level because less insulin is needed.

HELPS PREVENT DISEASES.

FIBERICH acts like a "sponge" that has the ability to absorb toxins in the colon by creating a spongy, gelatinous mass in the bowels. By swelling about 35 to 50 times its size and absorbing water, it breaks down and moves toxic waste matter stuck in the folds and crevices of the bowel. The intestines require an adequate amount of bulk in order for peristalsis to occur. This spongy effect stimulates peristalsis, the rhythmic muscular contractions in the bowel that are responsible for the evacuation process. Through this process, a harmful bacterium that survives on human waste passes through the intestines and is eliminated.

Yes, with a little care, piles can be prevented by avoiding constipation. Though piles mostly occur in the third trimester of your pregnancy from week 29 to week 40 (i.e. in the seventh, eighth and ninth month).

To avoid getting constipated,

- Drink plenty of water

- Include ample fresh fruits and vegetables

- Include some high-fiber foods like pears, green peas, beans, lentils, brown rice, wholemeal bread, and chapatis

- Practice the Kegel or pelvic floor exercises to increase circulation around the rectum and increase the strength of the muscles in the vagina and perineum

- Rest your feet on a stool often. Could also repeat the same when in the toilet since this position helps to open the bowels more easily

- Do not withhold going to the toilet for longer periods

- Consult a piles doctor to prescribe a mild laxative

"Kellogg believed that light could cure a whole range of ailments. Bathing in light, he wrote in 1910, had cured England's King Edward of gout. It could help typhoid patients, people who had survived scarlet fever, and diabetics. Light was a treatment for obesity, scurvy, chronic gastritis, hyperpepsia, and constipation, according to Kellogg. He build the first incandescent light bath in 1891 and used light therapy to treat patients for years." www.theatlantic.com

A wild riot of colour as thousands celebrate London's Gay Pride Parade 2011. London 02.07.2011

This Saturday July 2nd 2011 saw the explosion of colour and fabulous carnival/cabaret fancy-dress which is the annual Gay Pride parade passing through the packed London streets as many Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender groups representing special interest campaigning groups, trade unions, the armed forces, police service, christian groups and several of London's gay bars and clubs celebrated their sexuality and diversity, watched and cheered on by tens of thousands of enthusiastic members of the public.

The days celebrations were purposefully snubbed by London mayor Boris Johnson much to the anger and irritation of many, since Mr. Johnson is expected to show support for all Londoners. However, his greatest opponent in the upcoming mayoral elections, former London Mayor Ken Livingstone was to be seen - as always - at the head of the parade, accompanied by human and gay rights activist Peter Tatchell.

Gone was the nervous tension of the original trail-blazing Gay Pride marches of the late 1970's and early 80's, as a new generation of gay people enjoy far greater public acceptance of their lifestyle in what feel like more enlightened times. What is taken for granted now was fought for in the past by courageous activists and their political supporters who wanted to see an end to the homophobic bigotry and institutionalised discrimination which used to be the universal public position towards them.

Having said that, there was a demonstration set up at the bottom of Waterloo Place by a group of so-called Christians from the Baptist Church - some of whom looked like they had been time-warped directly from the 1950's, complete with emotional constipation - who spent the entire afternoon insulting and demeaning all gay people and anyone who accepts homosexuality as a part of the enormously wide spectrum of human sexuality by cherry-picking snippets from the Bible completely without proper context, and generally showing themselves up to be nothing more than a bunch of hate-filled bigots who hilariously claim to love the people they were standing there belittling.

My photos of the Baptists and the crowd's reactions to being assaulted by the pious abuse are already uploaded in my set "Baptists preach intolerance at Gay Pride Parade".

After the parade made its way from Portland Place to Trafalgar Square, the marchers and bystanders alike dispersed into Soho for some serious street partying which lasted late into the night. There was a main stage in Trafalgar Square which hosted a long rosta of minor-league pop and dance acts during the afternoon, though oddly this year there were no big-name headliners, and another Dance Stage in Soho Square which featured a great line-up of club DJs.

Rhubarb originated in the Asian Steps, and the plant was previously known only as a medicine: Rhubarb roots are useful as a cathartic in case of constipation. The leaves are poisonous, but in the 17th century the steals proved to be edible. In Belgium and the Netherlands, rhubarb is grown from about 1900.

As strange as it may seem, John D. Rockerfeller’s Standard Oil Company, known for its dominance in the oil industry, ventured into producing a petroleum product marketed as a remedy for constipation. The product was made by boiling crude petroleum to remove lighter oils, packing what was left in small bottles, and selling it as “Nujol.”

Mineral oil could cause diarrhea and that property of Nujol made it a laxative. But was it safe? Without test results, the ad features bold claims about the product, such as;

“Nujol removes poisons from the system, and gives the tissues of the body a chance to build up and resist disease. . . Nujol is not habit forming . . .

“It is especially fine for young mothers, as it is not absorbed into the system, and therefore in no way affects the child . . .”

Ah, the reassuring trifecta of early advertising: eliminating invisible "poisons," being "non-habit forming," and, of course, safe for everyone—including expectant mothers. It’s fascinating how ads from that era leaned heavily into these comforting claims to ease any hesitations about trying their products. This ad uses visual and rhetorical appeals to sell not just a product but a lifestyle or philosophy.

“The Athlete’s First Principle is to Keep His System Clean.”

The use of what looks like an ancient Greek statue evokes a sense of classical ideals, health, and strength, which aligns well with the message they were promoting. Pairing that with the bold statement about the athlete’s principles gives it an air of authority and timeless wisdom – perfect for convincing consumers back in 1917.

There are plenty of bold claims about not letting your body absorb poisons because anything from a headache to the most serious illness may result from such absorption, as “your doctor will tell you." Statements like that were quite the persuasive tactic, leaning on the authority of medical professionals to bolster trust, even when the science was a bit hazy. The fear of “absorbing poisons” cleverly played on anxieties about health, suggesting that constipation was the lurking villain behind every ailment, from minor discomforts to life-threatening conditions.

The combination of scare tactics about toxins and health risks with the promise of a simple solution like Nujol must have made the ad incredibly persuasive at the time. Nujol was sold as a laxative for many years. A court case from 1927 mentions that by the end of 1927, the company had invested significantly in advertising and had sold millions of bottles. Nujol is still used today as a lubricant laxative to help soften stool and make bowel movements easier.

Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone and is very common among women of reproductive age. Approximately 5% of women don’t know that they have underlying thyroid issues.

Common symptoms:

-fatigue

-cold intolerance

-weight gain

-constipation

-delayed reflexes

Common gynecologic symptoms:

-heavy or irregular periods

-discharge from the breasts

-anovulation (ovulation kit with a consistently negative result and a common cause of infertility).

Cure for Constipation. Says who?

Pebble had to see the vet for dental extractions (five teeth) this week.

During the course of Pebble's dental intervention, we decided to take advantage of the anaesthetic and had abdominal x-rays taken to see whether these would provide a clue as to why Pebble appears to be constipated at times and has a tendency to scoot across the carpet after visiting the toilet for a number 2.

I am now pleased to present the two most expensive images taken this year so far :-)

The vet's verdict on these images was after all inconclusive but he remarked that Pebble has an extraordinary amount of sublumbar muscle.

More on the x-rays and this week's feline veterinary exploits are available here: makedoandmendnovice.blogspot.com/2021/04/pebbles-trip-to-...
