FATAL ACCIDENT AT MATAHURA

A fatal accident, startling in the suddenness of its consequences, occurred on Saturday afternoon last and by which an active and promising life was brought to an untimely and abrupt termination. The victim was Mr W. Potter, of Ohinewai, a young man of 26 years of age, widely known and esteemed. It appears Mr Potter was at the time engaged bringing in a waggon load of green flax from a swamp on the Matahura road, about two miles in from the railway crossing; when on coming down a small hill the horses (four) got a bit restive and in his attempt to restain them he fell off his load, (flax is at all times very slippery), and falling violently on his head he received such a shock that death was almost instantaneous. Mr Hannan Wolter, for whom deceased was working, happened to be riding some litting distance behind the waggon and on seeing what had happened immediately went to render help and found that Potter was insensible, he remained so far a short time and expired. He then rode on to inform Mr W, Hooten, (brother-in-law of Mr Potter) at Ohinewai, and despatched a messenger to Huntly who returned with Dr. Maclachlan at once. On arrival the doctor pronounced life extinct and stated the cause of death. The body was soon removed to Mr Hootens, their sudden and sad bereavement plunging the family into gloom and despondency. An inquest was held at Mr Hooten's yesterday, into the circumstances, Mr R. R. Ralph J.P., acted as Coroner, the jury consisted of Messrs R. Muir, foreman, Salton, Stott, and Zance. Mr Harman Wolter, the chief witness, stated the particulars, as mentioned above, and what he had done after the accident, leaving one of his men in charge of the body while he despatched a messenger for the doctor and hastened to report the matter to the police. Dr. Maclachlan stated that when he arrived at the scene of the accident he found deceased lying on his back, his face being very blanched. He discovered a wound about an inch long on the vertex of the head, and the body was very limp. Death in his opinion resulted from failure of the heart's action caused by a violent shock to the system such as a heavy fall might produce, Robert Waugh, who came to Mr Wolter's assistance, and Mr W. Hooten brother-in-law of deceased also gave evidence. The jury returned a verdict a "Accidental Death." The body will be taken to Auckland to-day for interment.

MR. JOSEPH POTTER.

The remains of Mr. Joseph Potter were interred at Waikumete cemetery yesterday afternoon. Mr. Potter arrived in Auckland by the ship Egmont as far back as 1858, just 54 years to the day of his death. Mr. Potter carried on business for many years in this city, and has resided at Mt. Eden for the last 34 years of his life. During the last few years, Mr. Potter has been pretty well confined to his house, as he had attained the advanced age of 84. In bygone times he was chairman of the Mount Eden Road Board, Domain Board, and School Committee. He was also an active worker in connection with the Congregational Church, being for years deacon of the old High-street Church, afterwards at Beresford-street Church, and up to the time of his death a deacon of Mount Eden Church. He also officiated as superintendent of that Sunday school for a long period. Mr. Potter was predeceased, by his wife 10 years ago. He leaves two sons and five daughters, twenty-one grandchildren, and one greatgrandchild.

A FATAL HONEYMOON.

TWO UNLUCKY WEDDINGS.

SAD FEATURES OF CASES.

DEATHS IN HOSPITAL.

After lingering for nearly twelve months in the Waikato Hospital with a fractured spine, Rowland Hooton, aged 24, died last night. His case was a sad one and pathetic features are associated with it. He had just heen married and was on his honeymoon when a car driven by his wife, ran up a bank and he received severe injuries. Since then his wife has been practically a daily visitor to the hospital and patiently helped to beguile the weary hours. Tragedy descended, however, and his injuries ended fatally. Deceased was an engineer at Putaruru.
