Picture of our house late this morning showing our two styles of air conditioning - open windows, and the air conditioning unit. So far this year, we have used the air conditioning unit once - it's been a cooler than expected summer. The open windows are usually more than enough... The temperatures are supposed to raise a bit, but so far, it doesn't look as if we'll need to use the air conditioner much this year (other than the wind from the open windows - Kitahiroshima is a very windy place).
I need to get out more - my inspiration is at a low ebb ... ;-)

"#3100 was the first air-conditioned transit bus in the country. The bus was designed and built as an experiment. It has other features introduced in the 1950s: a push-type rear exit door, wraparound seating in the rear portion, soft seating, and fluorescent lighting. Model #5106 introduced the air-ride suspension to transit bus service. Air-ride is still the standard. After nearly two decaades of passenger service, this vehicle was assigned to the Transit Police. Bus #3100 was retired from service in the mid-1970s and restored to its original appearance in the early 1990s."

Last spring, the window behind this air conditioner unit was broken, allowing a friend of mine to enter the building. He shot pictures of playrooms still piled up with toys and chairs, even a grand piano. By the time I arrived, however, the window had been replaced, and all the interiors emptied. If I had broken in, I could have gotten pictures of empty rooms, but that would have been far less interesting.

There are over 110 air conditioners in this photograph. There are only two seasons in Singapore. 90 degrees, and above 90 degrees. Hot Hot Hot.
The project begins with a 1980’s home-builder house fronting on lake austin. The original design did not harness views to the lake and Mount Bonnell, nor did it respect the ecological sensitivity of its site.
The challenge was to develop a sensitive and inventive result out of a pre-existing condition. Through the use of glass, steel, detailing and light the home has been adaptively reinvented.
Reflection, translucency, color and geometry conspire to bring natural light deep into the house. A new solarium, pool, and vegetative roof are tuned to interact with the natural context.
Exterior materials and refined detailing of the roof structure give the volume clean lines and a bold presence, while abstracting the form of the original dormers and gable roof.
Further connecting the home to its site, the roof begins to dissolve where a glass clad chimney and slatted wood screen stand in relief against the sky.
