I am visiting this store again, but the store is in a much different condition from when I saw this store back in 2024.
This store officially closed on February 19, 2026, but I decided to go back and see it one last time. This Safeway was the last store in the state to have this decor from the 90's, after another Safeway which I visit last year in Pinole shuttered. The cool thing is since the store is closing, there is no shame snapping a bunch of pics of the store with my phone since I certainly would not be the only person doing so during it's closing sales. I tried to get some angles and extra shots that I didn't get in 2024.
Based on recounts of this location, this is one of the last Safeway's that ever got this decor, since I learned that it had the Safeway Marketplace interior until at least 2001/2002. This Safeway has always been a weird store, since it obviously has never been remodeled to Pre-Lifestyle or Lifestyle, or even got any new Safeway signage after it's logo change, but it would get improvements such as self-checkout and the up-to-date produce displays. It's also interesting that it wasn't remodeled to Pre-Lifestyle instead of this decor for when it was remodeled.
Whether another grocery store will fill it's place, if it becomes just another fitness club, furniture store, or discount store, or if it just sits empty for decades is still up in the air.
The Conditioning House is a Grade II Listed Building.
Built in 1902 as a scientific testing centre for the wool industry after a special act of parliament, it once welcomed nearly 70 per cent of all wool produced in the UK that was taken there for testing.
It was the only Council-run centre for the testing of wool in the country, but, by the late-1980s, it was making losses and was sold by the Council.

Although Mezereon (Daphne mezereum) is a frequent garden shrub it is also a rare native. Pink-purple flowers appear on the twigs early in March (sometimes February) and the leaves appear a month later, usually as the flowers are dying. I found this plant in just that condition, with the flowers withering as the leaves were opening. Its status in Britain is confused by garden escapes but it was found growing in the wild as early as 1752. Remote populations on limestone in northern England are generally considered to be genuine natives, plus a few other populations on chalk in the south. I photographed this individual in Miller's Dale, one of Derbyshire's limestone dales that have European level protection as a Special Area of Conservation.
In the autumn it produces red berries which are highly toxic. The leaves and twigs are also poisonous and simply touching them can cause a skin rash. Its sap used to be used as a cosmetic to add colour to the cheeks but a self-induced facial skin rash isn't especially attractive, so was soon dropped. Also repeated use caused damage to the blood vessels in the cheeks.
Its scientific name is Daphne mezereum. In Greek mythology, Apollo mocked Eros for having a bow and arrow when he wasn't a proper warrior. To punish him Eros shot Apollo with his golden arrow through the heart, which caused him to fall in love, or rather lust with the nymph Daphne. But Eros also shot Daphne with a lead arrow, which caused her to hate Apollo. Apollo pursued Daphne until she begged her father to save her (Her father was Peneus, a river god). He did this by turning her into a Laurel Tree, which Apollo, still in love, cared for and tended. He also used his powers of eternal youth on the tree, which is why (Bay) Laurel leaves do not decay. Apollo also vowed that her leaves would adorn leaders and champions. Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) is a completely different plant to Mezereon. Another scarce British plant is Spurge Laurel, which is also in the genus Daphne. Mezereon is also sometimes known as Olive Laurel.
