A special coolant called a refrigerant functions in a refrigerator the way alcohol works on your skin, except in a refrigerator, the coolant is trapped inside a series of coils. As it makes a circuit through them, it changes back and forth from a liquid to a gas.
Friedrich central air conditioning condensing units and evaporator coils for 1960. This was before the two pole twin cylinder compressor. These condensing units use the Tecumseh "J" series twin cylinder, four pole, internally sprung hermetic compressors. The higher capacity models use the Tecumseh "F" series four cylinder, two pole, externally sprung hermetic compressors. The 7½ ton model uses a Copelametic semi-hermetic compressor.
Mint condition IKEA desk that is perfect for studying or working at home. I'm sad to sell it, but will sadly be moving out of the Bay Area.
Come see for youself - the desk has hardly been used and is in immaculate condition.
Here is what IKEA has to say about it:
"When I designed FREDRIK workstation I wanted to find a solution that could grow with your child and serve as their hub for doing homework, surfing, playing and gaming. It was also important that it could handle a computer and all things that connect to it, like printers, digital devices, cables, etc - even things we still don't know about that might come in the future! I was inspired by what factory assembly lines look like, with everything you need within easy reach. FREDRIK is good for small spaces because it uses height efficiently and you can adjust the shelves to your needs."
First one I have ever seen in this condition in a junkyard. Did not take me long to take all the goodies from this car. I may try to sell the grill assembly if I get a great offer for it.

Two Rolls Royce engines end to end for Sheffield hills!
With chassis made by Dennis in Guildford, Surrey, body built by Alexanders in Falkirk, Scotland and fitted with a Rolls Royce engine to cope with Sheffield's hills, the new bus entered service with South Yorkshire PTE in May 1983, receiving fleet number 2281.
The original livery was South Yorkshire's Tan and Cream. The new bus was allocated to Sheffield's Herries Road garage.
She became Mainline 2281 in June 1993 and was subsequently re-painted into Mainline livery of red and yellow with silver and blue bands above the 'skirt'. The company was sold to its employees on November 18th 1994, becoming Mainline Group Ltd. Mainline joined the First Group in July 1998, becoming First Mainline and then on March 24th 2003, First South Yorkshire.
First Group had embarked on a national renumbering scheme and 2281 became 30430 on February 27th 2003, only to be withdrawn shortly afterwards.
The newly renumbered 30430 passed to Houston Ramm, the Heywood, Lancashire dealer in June 2003, destined for the Barnsley scrap yards - in line with First Group policy not to allow their buses to be sold on for further passenger carrying service.
City Church Sheffield had been looking for a suitable vehicle and First Group gave Houston Ramm permission to sell it to them on condition that it would not be used or sold on as a service bus. The bus was then delivered back to Sheffield in July 2003.
Since then much help has been given by First South Yorkshire at Rotherham and by other volunteers to bring the bus back to a roadworthy condition and to prepare it for its new role. During much of this time it has been housed at the Sheffield Bus Museum at Tinsley.
The aim is to equip the bus with a coffee-bar downstairs and a lounge area on the upper deck. It will then be used in and around Sheffield in connection with the many activities of the church.
And it was!! It was very useful and a great resource too!
Meter instruction sticker had slid down into the film door channel, and will have to be removed, and the battery well lip will need some attention.

Reminds me of the last time these big AC units were here. We actually incorporated them into the show one night(micing them, etc.). Lots of fun.

exploring the tulbagh blockhouse with the clan
this particular block house is in bad condition, raided by locals for corrugated iron roof sheet/ cladding and the internal wooden floors/decking burnt.
117 years after. the ever present destructive monster in man/woman unkind.
photographer's note-
blockhouses were built by the british from 1899-1902 during the anglo-boer war to protect the railway bridges from
boer attacks
the stone is local while the remaining materials were imported from britain. some were constructed entirely from concrete
the block houses could house 20 men with water, munitions and supplies stored on the lower floor. The living quarters were on the middle floor and was accessible by a retractable ladder and the top floor was the lookout deck.
only about 1000 of these blockhouses were built and few have survived
they were very effective barriers and few saw any action.
end of note
*************************************
The building of blockhouses started in March 1900 to protect the railways, in particular the railway bridges. Many of these were impressive structures of stone, with corrugated iron roofs, standing three storeys high and enetred by an external wooden stair in the form of a drawbridge.
These were effective but also time consuming and costly to build. This led to more modest style structures being built in the form of rectangular, signle-storey buildings with a stone wall mounted upon which was a coorugated iron upperwork, this was pierced with loopholes and double skinned, the void between being filled with stones to block rifle fire. Even these structures were slow to construct and a solution to these was sort by Kitchener, he turned to Major Spring R Rice, Officer Commanding 23 Field Company, Royal Engineers based as Middleburg, Transvaal.
Major Rice designed two new forms of blockhouse, the first octagonal and the second, the one that became known as the 'Rice Blockhouse'. circular. This was made of of corrugated iron filled with a stone-filled, loopholed shield above and an earth-filled caisson below, the whole being topped off with a stone roof. When ideally sited the door was blocked approached under cover of a trench and the hillock on which it sat and the lower part of the walls was covered with loose stones for added protection. It was said that trained men could erect such a blockhouse in a single day and the record for erecting one was a mere three hours. It was usually garrisoned by a non-commissioned officer and six men. Outside the immediate area was protected by barbed wire and a barbed wire fence stretched between one blockhouse and the next, hung out with tin cans to make as much noise as possible when disturbed.
The fortifications in cluded numerous other modesl, often ad-hoc designs fashioned to meet the requirements of the location and adjusted to make the best of available materials, but the Rice design was the one that sprang up in huge numbers. By September 1901 the Western Railway blockhouse line from De Aar to Lobatsi, north of Mafeking, was complete, as was the Central Railway system from Naauwpoort to Pretoria and the Delalgoa Railway to the border of Koomati Poort. In addition a box west of Johannesburg and Pretoria and a line south-east to Standerton and Newcastle were operational. In the next three months the line north from Pretoria to Pietersberg was built, the Western Railwasy cover extended south-west to beaufort West and numerous additions made in Transvaal and was now Orange Colony. By May 1902 a line of blockhouses ran from Beaufort West right across Cape Colony to the Atlantic coast and yet more lines had been added elsewhere. By the end of the war there were 3,700 miles (6,000km) of lines with some 8,000 blockhouses manned by 50,000 British troops and 16,000 Africans.

A very special car, the ex-Sid Taylor/Peter Gethin McLaren F5000 M10B - Chevrolet that I photographed at Thruxton in August 1970 is manoeuvred in the paddock by owner Mark Longmore and driver Matthew Wirr. In my opinion it looks in far better condition now than in period :-)

In February 1977 after attending a Ramones concert in Los Angeles, music producer Phil Spector offered to assist in fabricating Rocket to Russia. The band denied his offer, feeling as though the album would not be the same without Tommy Ramone and Tony Bongiovi producing the album. While the band refused his initial offer, they later asked Spector to help with the album because of their lack of popularity and sales. End of the Century would be the first album released without former drummer and producer Tommy. Spector had become infamous through his work with the Beatles as well as solo albums by John Lennon and George Harrison. With these releases, Spector deemed what would become known as the "Wall of Sound," which is dense, layered, and reverberant sound that came across well on AM radio and jukeboxes. These standards are created through instruments performing identical parts in unison, using high-quality overdubbing and echo chambers to aid in the production value. The producer was convinced that the Ramones had talent with lyrics and musical structure, so he intended to promote the band through more advanced methods of sound output.
