"Doing what you like is freedom.

Liking what you do is happiness."

Frank Tyger

The viola is a large family containing 500 species, they are on record in Greece from the 4th century B.C.

Later in Europe, it was discovered that a plant similar to a viola grew in open areas.

The plant found mostly in fields and amongst rocks in the Alps, hence Alpine.

It became known as a wild pansy (French: pensée). It might have been a romantic Frenchman who 'named' it...

A pensée can be a thought or a saying, short or it can be as long as a paragraph, a page, a poem!

Maybe he thought of his loved-one, dried one amongst some book he carried? Juste une pensée... lol.

These delicately fragrant flowers come in a wonderful variety of colours.

The dark centres in some flowers are thought to resemble little faces.

These are a smaller variety that I have in the garden, I could not resist photographing them in the studio...

March, still cold, with hard rain and often stormy winds... interjected by a few sunny days full of hope and promise.

Slowly you see the earth come to life again, the grass turns greener and dashes of colour appear.

Our thick clothing replaced by more vibrant fabrics, boots discarded for daintier shoes.

We begin to feel 'lighter'?

Opulent and blousy. And secrets unfolded...

Those huge heads, so layered, all coming out of this one bud, this bud unfurling and displaying all this beauty... it NEVER ceases to amaze me.

A conceptual art image based on the book and movie, The Polar Express. Edited from an image I made a few years ago in Old Fort, North Carolina. Merry Christmas y'all!!!

Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate, meaning "Fly, thought, on wings of gold"

"Va, pensiero", also known in English as the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, is a chorus from the third act of the opera Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi.

These Tulips seemed to be singing, a gently swaying choir, I heard "Va pensiero..."

I wish you all a very good day and thank you for all your kind words, time, comments and likes. Very much appreciated. M, (*_*)

The Exhibit MUM.

A Hagoromo Intermediate Incurve Chrysanthemum.

Etymological Meaning of the Chrysanthemum Flower

It’s surprisingly easy to remember the scientific name for this flower because it’s Chrysanthemum, the same as the common name for gardening varieties.

However, the exhibition varieties used by florists and arrangers were divided into their own genus known as Dendranthema.

The mums in your yard are likely part of the Chrysanthemum group, while the bouquet sent by the florist contains all or mostly Dendranthema flowers.

Aside from small Latin differences, all Chrysanthemums share a common Greek source for their name.

The words Chrysos, meaning gold, and Anthemon, meaning flower, were combined to reflect the beauty and value of this blossom.

This name carries over the Chinese and Japanese translations, which literally mean gold flower or blossom as well.

From the same plant, it is fascinating to see the differences.

Like people in one family, LOL.

I love them, they last at least 2 weeks in a vase. Beauties.

Alstroemeria, the genus named after the Swedish baron Alströmer who brought them back from a trip to South America in 1753.

Also called the Peruvian Lily or Inca Lily, is a South American genus of about 50 species of flowering plants.

Almost all of the species are restricted to one of two distinct centers of diversity, one in central Chile, the other in eastern Brazil.

Species of Alstroemeria from the Atacama Desert of Chile are winter-growing plants while those of Brazil are summer-growing.

The flower, which resembles a miniature lily, is very popular for bouquets and flower arrangements in the commercial cut flower trade.

Hydrangea, the name, comes from the Greek words "hydro" or water, and "angeion," or vase = water vase, they prefer a lot of water.

A very ancient plant, found in fossils going back thousands of years.

In most species the flowers are white, but in some species (notably H. macrophylla), they are blue, red, pink, light purple, or dark purple.

In these species the colour is affected by the presence of aluminium ions which are available or tied up depending upon the soil’s pH content.

For H. macrophylla and H. serrata cultivars, the flower colour can be determined by the relative acidity of the soil: an acidic soil (pH below 7), will have available aluminium ions and typically produce flowers that are blue to purple, whereas an alkaline soil (pH above 7) will tie up aluminium ions and result in pink or red flowers.

I wish you all the very best and thank you for all your kind words, time, comments, likes and faves.

Spring River Flowers Moon Night…

The river is smooth and calm this evening,

The peony flowers bloom.

The moon floats on the current.

The tide carries the stars.

— Qian Qi (Tang Dynasty)

A romantic flower, this peony starts pink and ends ever so pale.

The Greeks believed they could cure over 20 ailments and were found in every monastery garden.

Peonies have been cultivated for over 2,000 years, more for their medicinal qualities than for ornament.

The Japanese protect the earliest peony blooms from the snow by protecting them with individual small thatched shelters.

Some geishas used to wear special peony colours.

The Chinese name for peony is "sho yu" which means "most beautiful" and they idolised this flower.

The common thread is that the flower always denotes luxury and indulgence.

Went for again for a dramatic lighting, to make them 'different' from other flower images...

My favourite... Lol, thank you for your time and comments, M, (*_*)

ART NOUVEAU... TULIPS and IRIS

Art Nouveau is an international style of art, architecture and applied art, especially the decorative arts, that was most popular between 1890 and 1910.

A reaction to the academic art of the 19th century, it was inspired by natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of plants and flowers.

Also known as Jugendstil.

Art Nouveau took its name from the Maison de l'Art Nouveau (House of the New Art), an art gallery opened in 1895 by the Franco-German art dealer Siegfried Bing that featured the new style.

Found those 'frazzled' tulips, new to me those 'frayed’ edges, new varieties all the time?

And then there was this dazzling Iris!

I loved the combination, frazzle dazzle razzle razzmatazz... all those words kept swirling through my head while I was again experimenting for a good comp and lighting.

A synergy is where different entities cooperate advantageously for a final outcome.

These were definitely a MATCH!

Two Spring flowers, the Blue (Dutch Iris) and pink fringed Tulips.

How can I resist them?

Anthuriums are a fun flower and never fail to provoke a smile.

They look almost unreal!

The flowers are thick, shiny, ribbed and wrinkled, while the leaves are large and glossy, thus very 'reflective', which makes them so much more difficult to photograph well! Yes I do love a challenge!

The flowers are hermaphrodite, containing male and female flowers.

Quite a whimsical flower.

Yet I do love a challenge!

They belong to the Araceae family, which also includes callas and philodendrons.

Their genus name, Anthurium, comes from the Greek words anthos meaning "flower," and oura, meaning "tail."

Anthurium can also be called "Flamingo Flower" or "Boy Flower", both referring to the structure of the spathe and spadix.

ALL IMAGES ARE BEST seen On Black, yours too!

't Was on a cold Sunday, late afternoon.

It had snowed, 't was freezing cold, what little sun there'd been, was fast going down, the light was fading, no more folk around, they'd all gone home to warmth and cosiness.

And me I was still standing, waiting for t'right moment...

You have to read this with a Yorkshire accent, hihi.

Ilkley Moor is very famous, I was standing high on the ridge, in the distance you see the other side of the Dale(valley).

I love snow and cold, when it is that dry crisp air that tastes healthy and reinvigorates you.

This had been it, properly dressed for this occasion, I felt so good.

Aquilegia chrysantha 'Yellow Queen' .

This columbine cultivar is perennial that features large, upward facing, fragrant, bright yellow flowers with long, outward curving spurs.

Flowers grow on a long stem above the leaves and have five pointed yellow sepals and five yellow petals with long spurs projecting backwards between the sepals.

At the center of the flower are many yellow stamens.

Aquilegia comes from the Latin word for eagle in reference to the flower's five spurs which purportedly resemble an eagle's talon.

From the movie: A Clockwork ORANGE...by Stanley Kubrick...

Alex: Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeously made flesh.

It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now.

As I slooshied (=listened), I knew such lovely pictures!

I love Ranunculus, the multi-layered blooms opened beautifully, not always evident, their stems are extremely delicate and do tend to just collapse before the bud can open into a gorgeous voluptuous bloom...

When I first saw this it had such a Japanese feeling?

Crocosmia (Montbretia) is a small genus of flowering plants in the iris family, Iridaceae.

It is native to the grasslands of southern and eastern Africa, ranging from South Africa to Sudan.

The roots of the lowermost corm in a chain are contractile roots and drag the corm deeper into the ground where conditions allow.

The chains of corms are fragile and easily separated, a quality that has enabled some species to become invasive and difficult to control in the garden.

Almost like Strawberries…

They are commonly known in the United States as coppertips or falling stars, and in the United Kingdom as Montbretia.

The genus name is derived from the Greek words krokos, meaning "saffron", and osme, meaning "odor" – from the dried leaves emitting a strong smell like that of saffron (a spice derived from Crocus – another genus belonging to the Iridaceae) – when immersed in hot water.

Raspberries, not only are they delicious but they rank near the top of all fruits for antioxidant strength!

Raspberry derives its name from raspise, "a sweet rose-colored wine" (mid-15th century), from the Anglo-Latin vinum raspeys, or from raspoie, meaning "thicket", of Germanic origin.

The name may have been influenced by its appearance as having a rough surface related to Old English rasp or "rough berry".

OF ORANGE CUPS and YELLOW FROCKS… DAFFODILS

The daffodil serves as the national flower of Wales.

In Wales it is traditional to wear a daffodil on Saint David's Day (March 1).

The flower is a common decoration flower during Chinese New Year.

March 1: The Sharp Days

This was considered the first day of the year in Venice and in Russia until the fourteenth century. It was also the first day of the Ottoman financial year.

The Greeks say that good weather begins on March 1st.

The first three days of March are called Sharp Days: One should not wash clothes (for they will wear out), chop wood (or it will rot) or bathe (for one's hair will fall out).

Various Cancer Societies around the world use the Daffodil as fundraising symbol. "Daffodil Days" are organised to raise funds by offering the flowers in return for a donation.

Overall, I think it sends such a strong sign of hope, that Spring is in the air, the Earth is moving again!

I could not resist photographing those orange and yellow mini trumpets, challenging as they were!

Fuchsia, free, fun, they dance to the tune and rhythm of the wind.

Fuchsia flowers from the garden. So delicate and pretty and in one of my favourite colour-combinations!

Fuchsia is a genus of flowering plants that consists mostly of shrubs or small trees.

The first, Fuchsia triphylla, was discovered on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola (present day Dominican Republic and Haiti) in 1703 by the French Minim monk and botanist, Charles Plumier.

He named the new genus after the renowned German botanist Leonhart Fuchs

The vast majority of garden hybrids have all descended from a few parent species.

Brought these, as they looked ready, only when I looked through the viewer did I spot the bumble bee, it stayed there the whole time, I thought is was dead, but no, it was just gorging on the pollen.

After the shoot, I put it outside and loaded, it flew off in freedom!

Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterised by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae.

Prickles occur all over the plant – on surfaces such as those of the stem and flat parts of leaves.

These are an adaptation that protects the plant against herbivorous animals, discouraging them from feeding on the plant.

Interesting bit: Carduus is the Latin term for a thistle (hence cardoon, and chardon in French), and Cardonnacum is the Latin word for a place with thistles.

This is believed to be the origin of name of the Burgundy village of Chardonnay, Saône-et-Loire, which in turn is thought to be the home of the famous Chardonnay grape variety.

Full on still from the florist.

Only just opening tentatively in the garden.

With a recorded history that dates back thousands of years, it’s not surprising that even the mythology surrounding the origin of the peony has multiple versions.

One legend has it that the peony is named after Paeon, a physician to the gods, who received the flower on Mount Olympus from the mother of Apollo.

And another tells the story of that same physician who was ‘saved’ from the fate of dying as other mortals by being turned into the flower we know today as the peony.

The traditional floral symbol of China, the state flower of Indiana, and the 12th wedding anniversary flower, peonies are known as the flower of riches and honour.

With their lush, full, rounded bloom, peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage.

Have a wonderful day, filled with love and thank you for your visit, M, (*_*)

by Jacques Brel for the music lovers.

It is considered as "Brel's ultimate classic"

The lyrics "Moi, je t'offrirai des perles de pluie venues de pays où il ne pleut pas" ("I'll give you pearls of rain that come from lands where it does not rain") are sung to a theme borrowed from the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 by the composer Franz Liszt.

I had the good fortune of seeing him live and meeting him!

So in love they cannot imagine life without each other.

The red Gerbs are telling me that here.

Again, the flower gave the clues!

Have FUN, I wish you all the very best and thank you for all your kind words, time, comments, faves.

Very much appreciated. M, (*_*)

Nature at its freakiest best?

Most unusual, these bi-coloured Rococo Parrot Tulips, flowers with twisted, irregularly fringed petals.

Even their leaves are wild and 'Baroque'.

They are weird, even a little 'alien'?

Are they ‘monstrous beauty or beautiful monster’

These white and green are the most exotic of the lot though!

Love them or hate them, Parrot Tulips are Spring's grand (bulb) showcase, big and beautiful, they have flamboyant flowers with streaks, ruffles and frayed edges.

Have a glorious day and thank you, M, (*_*)

Hope you do too, thank you for viewing, Magda (*_*)

I bought them in tight buds, and waited... and one just opened ahead of the others!

Timidly they are unfurling, holding the promise for tomorrow!

In Flower-language Iris means faith; hope; wisdom and valour

Iris can mean:

* The sphincter around the pupil of the eye, the iris is the most visible part of the eye, when photographed with a flash, the iris only reacts to protect the retina, and not fast enough to avoid the red eye effect.

* The equivalent device in a camera,

* The messenger of the gods in Greek mythology,

* A variety of flower,

* A female first name.

Hope this makes you smile again, have a good day and thank you for your visit, so very much appreciated, Magda, (*_*)

Cascading gold, the petals of a Gerbera.

Gerbera is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family.

It was named in honour of the German naturalist Traugott Gerber.

It has approximately 30 species in the wild, extending to South America, Africa and tropical Asia.

Colours include white, yellow, orange, red, and pink. The center of the flower is sometimes black.

It is the fifth most used cut flower in the world (after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum, and tulip).

Hope this brings a bit of joy again rather than Angst which I see around me and in so many images, have a good day and thanks for your visit, so very much appreciated, Magda, (*_*)

#AB_FAV_SPRING_🌷

Dicentra's flowering period: April to May, arching sprays of dainty, rose-pink, heart-shaped flowers appear in late spring above fern-like, fresh green leaves.

A single flower of Dicentra spectabilis, about the size of the tip of my thumb, it will never cease to fill me with wonder and marvel at the intricacy and beauty of Nature.

English: Venus's car, bleeding heart or lyre flower

Français : Cœur de Marie ou Cœur-de-Jeannette

German: Tränendes Herz

Nederlands: Gebroken hartje, Mariatranen, bloedend hartje.

Italian: Cuor di Maria

When you look closely you see their hidden tears...Dicentra Spectabilis

Wishing you well and stay safe!

JUGENDSTIL... Tulip

Jugendstil, artistic style that arose in Germany about the mid-1890s and continued through the first decade of the 20th century, deriving its name from the Munich magazine Die Jugend (“Youth”), which featured Art Nouveau designs.

An artistic red Tulip almost like a conductor of the orchestra. AAH imagination is a beautiful thing!

I don't talk to flowers, they talk to me and I gladly listen with my eyes!

Shimmering in silky tones I discovered these, a mix if white and pink I had NEVER seen before!

The petals look 'waxy' but feel silky soft!

The peony was originally introduced as medicine.

In fact, its ancient Japanese name "Ebisugusuri" literally means ‘medicine from China’.

However, due to its beautiful and now mostly double blooms, in time, many decorative varieties were developed. In Japanese society, it was seen both as a medicine and a source of beauty.

THANKS for ALL your comments and visits, so appreciated.

Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*)

It had the stamens with all the pollen amongst the petals. I discover new things still!!

A close-up of a mauve tulip of the double variety with enormous beauty.

Another 'found' treasure of Spring.

We always have a smaller studio in our home, in between things there is time for some of my favourite photography, playing with lights...
