This is the first time that I have visited the house and gardens of Compton Verney. Whilst the art galleries are impressive, it was the gardens that leant themselves to the camera. Here is a picture of the lake with the Bridge from Lancelot "Capability" Brown's landscaping in the background.
This is a print produced from the woodcut, Threshing, done in 1922. In his later years, Nash was well known as an illustrator of poetry collections and books on the countryside, as engravings, water colours or pen and ink sketches, and he continued working right up to his death aged 84 in 1977.
Photographed on most visits as it's hard just to walk on past, this is a closer look at the gable and bell tower on this grand house. It was designed by James Gibbs in 1736-43 as a stable block, later converted into accommodation.
Three Union Pacific locomotives have Norfolk Southern train 202 northbound over the trestle at Compton, VA, October 26, 2017. It's a GE sandwich with two EMD SD70ACEs on each end of the consist. It was most unfortunate that a cloud blocked the near perfect morning sunlight about ten minutes before the train showed up.

Pictured: Mixed freight train M8T, traveling from Roanoke to Enola, crosses one of the many high trestles along the Shenandoah Valley line. The South Fork Shenandoah River in Compton, Virginia, makes for a beautiful background in this photo.

Freshly repainted Macto. I think I'm reading 101580 as the number. What a beauty, I think even the signboard is new!
The extensive grounds at Compton Verney provide a good setting for artistic works old and new. This is the Green Dwelling installation by Krijn de Koning, which echoes the site of the medieval village that was swept away in Capability Brown’s recreation of the landscape in the 18th century. These two photos were taken about a year apart, and show that obviously the pieces can be moved around. (The small child wasn't part of the artwork.)
The cliffs here are rapidly eroding and sliding into the sea. These little plants hang on.
Compton Bay, Isle of Wight.
Well placed at the entrance to the wonderful collection of ancient Chinese art is a pair of gilt-bronze guardians or heavenly kings. They date from the Ming dynasty (AD1368-1644). This is the other figure and I thought at first he was lacking a fierce head and then spotted the more subtle one in the next photo.
Built beside the main house but not part of Compton Verney gallery itself is this beautifully proportioned one. It was designed by James Gibbs in 1736-43 as a stable block, later converted into accommodation.
