To be driven with care

One of four spinxes that guard the Adam Bridge as you approach Compton Verney House. This, wierdly, is more or less the unaltered photo (I don't have any whizzy software like PhotoShop anyway). I think, after a whole afternoon photographing Cranach paintings, my camera just got tired...

The thatched ice house, restored some years ago. I suppose it was the Smeg of its day...

Built in 1924, Compton Acres, situated Nr. Sandbanks in Dorset. The garden is a fine example of a historic Victorian Mixed Style design garden and consists of seven distinct gardens. Including both Italian and Japanese, a lovely garden to visit.

This is from a visit to Compton Castle, an impressive fortified manor house, part of the National Trust.

I found it challenging to take a photo without any people in it before I found that spot from the formal gardens towards the front of the house. I liked how the black and white treament adds a lot of drama and atmosphere although the weather was quite lovely that day.

Compton Verney is an award-winning art gallery located in a beautiful 18th century Grade I listed mansion built by Robert Adam. The house is set in over 120 acres of landscaped grounds designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. There was a manor at Compton Verney at least as early as 1150.

Outside the gallery was a colourful installation by Morag Myerscough, rather more colourful when the sun is shining on it.

Compton at low tide

Back to the 1990's here at Fenny Compton, as 47281 is seen with a down liner.

Capability Brown rarely designed buildings, however this is one of them.

A rare example of a building designed by Capability Brown.

Compton Verney's grounds are parkland with mature trees, and a one or two sections with topiary bushes. Here in the car park they have planted some roses, however - I think this is Rosa Mundi. They almost look edible.

Bert Edwards Tea Rooms.

Should you wander down Compton St Adelaide, you will find this fantastic little shop. Once a Bakery, and also Metropolitan Saw Works - but for our story the Tea Rooms of Burt Edwards (1887 - 1963)

The shop is now in private hands, the owner a Potter, runs his business behind this shop.

In 1912, Bert an Adelaide Politician(among other things) ran a Tea Room from this little building.

The photograph of Bert and an employee are found within the shop. On close inspection of the photograph of Bert, the shop window once displayed Pastilles by Rowntree and other cakes for sale.

As the story goes, Bert also ran games of Two Up, in the tiny back room of this shop.

I also note the signage that says ' Metropolitan Saw Works',

The shop is now used a dress shop, with clothes from the 40's,50's and 60's, displayed.

Note that the shop also appears to be 'joined' to the potting business. The current owner does not believe the house next door was part of the Tea Rooms, rather the little shop as we see it was it.

Perhaps in the day, when - as the plaque states, the building was once a house - but the owner also stated he did not believe this was the case, and that the tiny little shop was the Tea Room.

Compton Verney, near Kineton in Warwickshire, was requisitioned by the Army during World War II and became vacant when the war ended. In 1993 it was bought in a run-down state by the Peter Moores Foundation, a charity supporting music and the visual arts established by former Littlewoods chairman Sir Peter Moores. The property was restored to a gallery capable of hosting international exhibitions. Compton Verney Art Gallery is now run by Compton Verney House Trust, a registered charity, and is open to the public.

The latest in a series of red phone box 'creations' by local florist Chris Sharples marking Easter.

White Storks will surely choose a nest higher off the ground than this phone box when the time comes, but its still quite eye-catching. Look closely and you will see two chicks too.
