Souter Lighthouse, South Shields, Tyne and Wear, UK.
Compressor
Souter Lighthouse, built in 1871, was the first to be powered by AC electricity. It was sorely needed as in 1860 alone there were 20 shipwrecks on the treacherous rocks off Souter and Lizard points, between the Tyne and Tees estuaries.
Compressed air was needed to power the massive foghorn situated at the nearest point to the sea. The blast from here could be heard up to 20 miles away.
The lighthouse was totally decommissioned in 1999, having served only as a radio beacon since 1988.

Taken on 18th June, 2014 at 1218hrs with an Olympus OM-2sp through a Zuiko Auto-W 28mm ƒ/2.8 lens with a circular polarising filter on 35mm Kodak Ektar 100 ASA colour negative film, developed in Fuji-Hunt X-Press C-41 chemicals..

Inside the Pumphouse building on Cockatoo Island, one of the best preserved industrial sites in Sydney. According to my guide when the facility was decommissioned the workers were told to leave as though it was an ordinary day. Hence machinery was just covered, coffee cups and books left on the desk in the office etc.
Apart from generating power for the island, the pumps were used to pump out the two dry docks.
