A Compressed Fiddler Crab (Uca coarctata) picks its way across the mud on the banks of a tidal creek at the Cairns Botanical Gardens. This species prefers to inhabit high tidal areas of steep riverbanks or stream banks. Unlike the similar Orange-clawed Fiddler Crab (Uca vomeris), this species prefers muddy substrate over sand or a mix of mud and sand. (Photographed at Flecker Botanic Gardens & Centenary Lakes area of Cairns Botanic Gardens, Cairns, Queensland, Australia)
