I had a change of heart and decided to plant the new Medlar next to rather than instead of the Choisya.

For our test garden, we upgraded from a 1-compost bin system to a 3-compost bin system. Photo by Andrew of www.gardenerd.com, where you can get more info.

We built this compost bin over the weekend using instructions from Lowe's ( www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=howTo&p=LawnGarden/com... ). It has a hinged lid, removable slats in the front, and ventilated side panels.

This photo shows it in action, decomposing in the left container.

I move the unfinished compost from the top portion of one compost bin to the other to aerate and mix it up... then collected and sifted the finished compost at the bottom. #compost #sifting #shovel #compostbin #biostack June 11, 2017 at 06:06PM

The frame of recycled cedar posts stacked on concrete pavers to keep the wood off the ground.

Coming together: more salvaged and recycled cedar. Former deck stairs create the base. We could have parked our deck chairs right there, it's so sturdy!

My small vegetable garden - it used to be a lawn but I dug it up last year a day in the life of... group.

Mixing a good bucketful of grass clippings into my compost. I managed to get the job done in a short period of beautiful sunlight between hail storms.

Compost bins sitting side by side, flanked by two free-ranging hens looking for insects. The symmetry of this image still amuses me.

What a great idea a compost bin is; your garden cuttings and vegetable matter from the kitchen are turned into compost for the garden... sadly the bin is like a supermarket for rats!

We decided to get rid of ours after our neighbour found our stuff across her garden and then the tunnels under the fence and up into the bin. So it has to go!!!

Look forward to seeing how this looks in a season or two..

Step 3: Use a pitch fork to move the pile from the old bin to the new bin. I just start scooping it out on top of the leaves I just put down. If you look closely...

Here is our homemade compost bin that is actually doing quite well. After numerous aborted attempts, we've come up with this model. We've had it going for about 3 months now with no odor or insects. I'm very proud of us. This is the porch off our appartement so you can see that it works in small spaces.

The determination to outwit one's situation means that one has no models, only object lessons.

I started making a compost bin .... a very large one because there is enough natural material around to compost.

And you never know what critters you'll find when you turn the pile. You always find bugs like pincher bugs or some kind of larvae in the pile. That is normal and they help break things down. This time around I actually found some kind of newt in the pile. He must love the moisture and probably hunts down some of those bugs. It is a good sign when there are living things in the pile. It should be a healthy ecosystem of rotting and composting material that many things contribute to and benefit from.

When it's raining and wet, the Soldier Fly Larvae start crawling out of the compost bin.

It warms her butt, she says.

...and other stuff previously added that is now rotting and composting, like this corn stalk from this past summer. I think that watching all this stuff decompose is just about as interesting as growing it in the first place. I enjoy turning the compost pile and really getting my hands dirty.

The Original Composter/Composteamaker - produces a strong, natural fertilizer. By simply turning the composter, the materials inside will adequately mix together and the liquid will then be collected by the unique design of the base. Buy now envirocycle.com
