Bad news - not looking good at all. Entire inside of lid is frozen as is top several inches of composting mass. Temperatures down below are only a few degrees (Celsias) above zero.

Time to pack it in till spring I think

on the inside of the compost bin. Snails aren't so good for my garden, so I'll be getting rid of these.

Excellent compost from the plastic bins

The old compost bin frame can be seen in front, but we decided to make one which would allow for easier turning. So we bought hay bales and started by digging a 12 inch square hole closer to the wall.

What we take out of the compost bin!

Unfortunate but necessary culling of some rose blooms before their time.

The old compost pile. Very rich leaf compost that has been "brewing" for 2-3 years. It makes good starter material. If anyone wants some, I have plenty with more coming in the fall! It isn't the best quality because it is so shallow, but probably 10 feet across. Making a tall pile is difficult due to the incline. Compost bin. August 2009.

The old one was surrounded with chicken wire, which doesn't stop big dogs!

This is our third compost bin in as many years ~ having big, determined dogs has proven to be quite a challenge! We got the idea (and basic how-to's) for building a bin using old pallets from here: www.instructables.com/id/Pallet_Compost_Bin/

The dark pallet has hinges on it so it can be swung open for emptying. We nailed ours together, instead of tying them to each other.

As you can see, I put a healthy amount of leaves on top of the pile. This helps keep it moist between turns and cuts down on flies and such. I also use it in the next step...

a homemade compost bin - a wooden crate with cardboard and paper packaging as liners.

next to the box is the lucioius aloe vera, used as moisturizer

Had to fix the hole by cutting and/or shoring in order to make it more closely match the bales. The old bin can be seen in front.

We will maintain two bins a year (we'll need to build another bin). One we will add stuff to, one we will use for taking composted stuff out of.

Shannon was very excited about getting to help out!

Step 6: Add the kitchen scraps I've been saving, cover with more leaves.

The leftover remains of the original compost heap. I think I'll build a raised bed here, since the soil will be so abundant with nutrients! (Oh yeah, and Bit posing nicely again).

Item# CAG001009

Made from 100% recycled Polypropylene plastic. This composter narrows towards the top. It has a lid but no bottom, and it has access gates on all four sides. Some assembly is required - the four sides and the lid ship unassembled.
