An example of bad composition: people appear to be walking on the subject's head.

This is a high angle shot of my dog Segui. I like the way that the hand (with the treat) in the foreground helps create a sense of depth and perspective in which Segui appears abnormally small. I think the photo is a bit comical, and the high angle definitely contributes to that. It's also nice that the focus and lighting work so you can see a shimmer in Segui's eyes.

"Earth laughs in flowers. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

My photo meets the project goals by using symmetry to make the image look more appealing. I first went to my garage, set up a tripod, attached my phone, made an invention (attached led lights to a metal rod), then made the shutter speed 10 and proceeded to wave the rod until I got the shape I wanted. I think I did really well in managing to make the light create a nearly perfect circle. I would’ve liked for it to be a little less grainy in most areas.

Heiligenstädter parish church of St. Michael

For centuries the parish of saint Michael of Heiligenstadt was a major parish on the present territory of the region. The church was first mentioned already in 1243 as a branch church of the monastery of Klosterneuburg, in the 14th Century it became a parish church. But to the parish belonged not only the Holy City (Heiligenstadt), but also the surrounding villages Nussdorf, Grinzing, Sievering, Salmannsdorf, Neustift am Walde, Oberdöbling and Unterdöbling. The pastors of the church were again provided by the monastery, whose stuff still today is looking after the numerous parishes in the district. Since the faithful from the surrounding communities had to be co-supervised, Holy City also received a relatively large village church. But gradually received more and more of the surrounding villages the parish rights, so that the importance of Heiligenstadt declined slowly. Through the establishment of the parish Sievering Holy City lost in 1348 large parts of the western parish area, as well as Salmannsdorf and Neustift am Walde fell to the newly formed parish.

Also Döbling that later fell to the parish Währing soon became independent. The neighboring towns Nußdorf and Grinzing, however, remained to the parish reform by Joseph II at Holy City. The Gothic parish church had to be repaired after the destruction by the Turkish wars, in 1723 it was remodeled into the Baroque style. End of the 19th century, however, it was so dilapidated that it had to be demolished 1894-1898 except for the choir and down to its foundation walls. For the new building, which resembles the old building except for the tower, Richard Jordan was responsible, who also built the neighboring Carmelite Monastery Döbling. Furthermore, were involved in the new building Joseph and Martin Schömer.

As to the present parish church of Holy City we have to do with a multi-naved neo-Gothic church. Inside the preserved Gothic choir is striking. It stands not in a straight line to the main ship, but slightly offset. In addition, it runs slightly oblique. The cause of this fact either the composition of the ground or the symbolism for the slightly oblique inclined head of Jesus after the Kreuzigungstod (death on the Cross) are suspected.

The high altar, which designed the aforementioned architects, shows in the middle the patron saint of the parish, one also from the architects stemming neo-Gothic side altar the Holy Mary. From the Baroque reconstruction of the church, only the side altar has been preserved, which is dedicated to Saint Sebastian. The original high altar of Matthias Steindl was handed over to the parish Leopoldau, the high altar painting by Johann Georg Schmidt emigrated, however, in the museum of the monastery of Klosterneuburg. The Way of the Cross of the Church is still more recent. It was designed in 1930/31 by Franz Zelezny. The main characters of the Passion of Christ were effected here with the faces of celebrities (such as Federal chancellor Seipl) and residents of the Holy City.

The Korean Cultural Centre UK presents Hanji: Paper Compositions

Event Details

Date : 10 June – 13 August

Venue : Korean Cultural Centre

Private View : 6:00-8:00pm 10 June

The Korean Cultural Centre, UK presents Hanji: Paper Compositions, an exhibition that explores the possibilities of traditional Korean paper, or hanji. The exhibition approaches hanji as a versatile material, and features the work of over 20 internationally recognised and emerging artists whose mastering of various hanji techniques allows them to push the boundaries of making processes and practices.

While hanji was originally enjoyed by the royal family and nobility, its uptake became more widespread during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) when craftspeople, engaged with making goods for everyday use, took to recycling paper from discarded, old books. The paper products they created ranged from shoes, briefcases and ornamental objects, to lamps, basins, and even water buckets. The making techniques devised by artisans using hanji, which include jiho, jiseung and jeonji, have been developed over time ever since.

Through spotlighting methods of making, the Hanji: Paper Compositions exhibition presents audiences with the rare opportunity to encounter art and craft practices, all the while revealing the intricacies of creating paper-based works.

*Hanji: Paper Compositions is a special exhibition that is also touring to the Korean Cultural Centres in Italy.

A lamp, a wall, an arm and the sunset.

Next to a Randleman high school, there sits this water tower. Dona spotted it. I refer to her as my "eyes" since she has a greater ability to see things than do I. I have said before, I am not a visually-oriented person. My visual acuity is probably slightly below average.

The challenge in getting a decent compositional angle for this shot was the matter of trees. In fact, the challenge of shooting around trees proved to be an on-going situation throughout the day. Dona, however, is like a feisty chihuahua once she sets her mind to something. After some movement up and down the road to see where we needed to be to get a good shot, we found an area that afforded a workable perspective. I actually shot this tower from inside the car. I rolled the window down, stuck my camera out the window and took the shot. I did not try to get artsy with angles or anything. All I needed and wanted was a straightforward shot of the water tower displaying the name, Randolph County.
