Went out the second night to shoot this again, and am I glad I did!! The air was clear, the sky had color, and it didn't rain on me!! :D

Side note: I found out the hard way that the newspaper served a purpose. Scraping 3 inches of sticky black tar out of my boot lugs in 23 degree weather isn't easy. LOL

Do you ever have those dreams where you found yourself just there? With no beginning or ending but that somehow, intuitively, it felt right? Dreams are such a fascinating thing. Some of us wake up not remembering at all what we dreamt about and some of us wake up with the memory so vividly engrained in us that we can’t decipher whether it was real or not.

On my walk tonight, I began to think about my next project. I haven’t worked on a creative project in over a month. In part because I have been so busy with work and in part because I keep using my ancient computer as an excuse to be lazy. But the truth is, art has a spirit. Art has life. If you don’t feed the creative spirit, it will soon wither away. Now, this gets me thinking about many wonderful artists who are in a current state of “creative break to feed the soul”. Those artists need and deserve that break that they have earned – you HAVE to recharge the batteries. But me, I don’t need a break because my art is my break from real life. I haven’t been creating pieces long enough or consistently enough to warrant a break. So I must push on because if I don’t use it, then I know I will lose it.

Opened at Marlton Circle in 1959, Olga's, named after the mother of owner John Stavros, a first-generation Greek American, was known for its large selection of diner food and fine bakery goods.

She served us well, from coffee to waffles with crispy bacon, turkey rubens and apple pie a'la mode...fare well, dear diner.

There is something so wonderfully magical about just playing and experimenting. What if? What if we just tried this? Then what? If we added a little bit of that just to see what happened, what would the outcome be?

Sometimes, it works out and sometimes it doesn't. In the end you'll come out of the experience enriched. I am really trying to find myself as an artist, and what things I gravitate towards. I took a bit of a hiatus this year to reconnect with myself. For a while, I was feeling discouraged by having my work compared to this artist or that artist. I asked myself, “At what point will someone look at an image and be able to say, ‘That is so Anna.’?” After attending the NYC Promoting Passion Tour I felt rekindled with my inner creative child. My biggest take aways were from Lindsay Adler and Brooke Shaden. From Lindsay, I learned all about defining your style with a few keywords. She also stressed the value of scheduling days to play and how they positively influence her business. From Brooke, I learned all about legacy. She asked us to write down our legacy and so I did - I want to be remembered for taking bold action that inspires people to take action on the things they daydream about.

This shoot with Briauna from Just Bee Healing was all about taking bold action (for me). I felt scared to go in public with a yogi (who looked nude from a distance), use body paint on her and start flinging flour and baby powder just because that was my vision. However, it felt liberating and I remember thinking to myself, “This is what I am made for.” I love taking portraits and I love them even more when they can be different.

What beliefs are you hanging onto that are weighing you down?

One of the most beautiful parts of creativity IS the ability TO CREATE. Creativity is not bound to something or limited by something. It is free, ever changing, ever growing. Only you can set the boundaries of how far you wish to explore your creativity. Some choose a smaller piece to work from and grow to be amazing at their craft. Others will have no bounds and be forever curious as to what their imagination can create.

My art is entering a very exciting period of freedom. This freedom has come from freeing myself of beliefs that I have accumulated that don’t serve me. You see, opinions can be a valuable tool to be taken into consideration but they are just that and not a life sentence. You are not sentenced by what someone thinks or feels about you. Of course, unfavorable opinions can hurt and as human beings we want to fit in… but at what cost?

Up until this point in 2020, I was accepting every opportunity that I could and clinging to it because I felt like I was not doing enough to support my family. Quarantine taught me how wrong I was. I started to work on myself and on the idea of setting myself free by releasing what no longer serves me or what has never served me – whether that be material possessions, thoughts in my mind or emotions. Let me tell you, this kind of purging is not easy. It takes a great deal of work and courage but the key is to take it one day or layer at a time. Yes, my mind is still cluttered and yes, so is my home but every day I take one step closer.

@dandapanillc taught me this year that one’s call in life should never be dependent on someone or something and this just struck such a strong chord with me. He went on to say, “What happens when that one thing or person go away? You find that you have no purpose now.” For the longest time, my purpose was to help others and then it changed to “be a successful artist.” But after giving this some thought, my life purpose is to love myself just as I am because the being that I am is perfect. And so, with that insight, I was able to set myself free.

I have always wanted to do a cellphone shoot. Sheila emailed me last night asking me if I knew someone who would love to composite her images. I opened this e-mail at 5am and literally said, “F*** no.” Then I reminded myself that I am not myself before that first cup of coffee. So, I sat down with my coffee and breakfast in hand and began to think what I would do with these images.

The most exciting part for me was that these are cellphone images which just goes to show you don’t need the fanciest of cameras to edit. All of the composited images (except for the scratches texture) were taken with a cellphone. I had taken a couple of textures photos with my cellphone earlier this year while in Mexico and I used only those for this photo.

That arm? That’s me! I am so excited about this image! I cannot believe that I shot and composited and image all before 8:30am.

The place I felt the most safe and peaceful was in my garden. Sitting in the shade under the giant heads of the sunflowers brought me the respite I needed to refocus and calm my head and heart during some difficult transitions.

The flowers wouldn’t shade me completely however. My feet were always sticking out into the sunshine, like two glowing beacons of light. I would eventually be found, often too soon. A curious neighbor child would peer over the fence and ask me what I was doing. Joe, our playful black lab, would find me and tenaciously want me to through his ball. It seemed like just as I would settle into the warm earth, I would hear my daughters calling me from the kitchen window, they needed their mommy.

Sometimes I just wanted to become so small I could fit inside a sunflower and pull the pedals around me like warm satiny blankets of happy yellow sunshine. To this day I will take myself there in meditation. I cuddle into a bed of warm moist pollen and carefully wrap myself up in the soft pedals. I hear the calming buzz of nearby bees and I feel gentle puffs of air on my skin from the wings of butterflies. The air is warm and fragrant. I rest, slumber, and dream.

I truly believe that a work of art has a life of it's own. Much like humans, even though we can create another person, that person is an individual and has a life of their own. I love photography because it is the one media that I can use to most accurately portray my imagination. But at the end of the day, I have accepted and acknowledged that my art will be formed by its own power through my vision and hands.

September 1957 - Mill workers clocked out after an honest day's work, only to be told not to return the next day, or ever. Owners closed the mill due to a labor dispute...without prior warning. Workers were not granted re-entry to claim their belongings. Now nature reclaims it all, building and contents.

Not much left in this old factory but a few remnants. The title also speaks to the number old factories still standing in this country. Scheduled for demo, this ol gal will soon join the other dinosaurs of US industry.

Cold Spring House, Tannersville, NY will soon be demolished. Once a proud resort, left to nature in the 60s, she'll remain forever in our hearts and well preserved in our photos. I'm honored to have documented her existence.

Some of my research efforts were documented in an article in the Register Star, December 13, 2012, by David Dorpfeld, Greene County Historian. "The couple" mentioned is hubby and I. Pretty cool. Unfortunately, he didn't have much more to add to the historic information that we already gathered. I'll continue to dig to feed my obsession about this grand place.
