I retrieved this piece from some 'junk' that was being thrown out. I think it is an early homemade variable inductor. The two end pieces are hinged on small nails. At one time either side could be made to stay at any distance from the central coil. Has anyone else seen one of these? It reminds me of the Crosley 'book condensers'.

The Belgian Air Component has 4 Piper L21B Super Cubs in use for towing military gliders of the Air Cadets. They are based at Goetsenhoven, east of Brussels.
Six were acquired in 1975, all former Netherlands Air Force. Two were written off. Between 2000 and 2002 the remaining four (LB01, 02, 03 and 05) were almost completely rebuilt. They received a new fuselage, wing and engine.
The photos were taken at Oostmalle, a Cold War reserve base near Antwerpen.
LB01 is former Dutch R-113 and 54-2403.

Multiple integrated circuits at the heart of Europe’s space missions, etched together onto a single piece of silicon.
This 20 cm-diameter wafer contains 35 replicas of five different space chips, each incorporating up to about 10 million transistors or basic circuit switches.
Laid down within a microchip, these designs endow a space mission with the ability to perform various specialised tasks such as data handling, communications processing or attitude control.
To save money on the high cost of fabrication, various chips designed by different companies and destined for multiple ESA projects are crammed onto the same silicon wafers, etched into place at specialised semiconductor manufacturing plants.
Once tested for functionality, the chips on the wafer are chopped up and packaged for use, then mounted on printed circuit boards for connection with other microelectronic components aboard a satellite.
Since 2002, ESA’s Microelectronics section has maintained a catalogue of ‘building blocks’ for chip designs, known as Intellectual Property cores, available to European industry through ESA licence.

Needed to get the roll of film out of the camera because it should be finished but advanced it and there was one more shot worth of film, took a picture, advanced it and hit the end, popped the lever to wind the exposed film back into magazine to drop it off at Long's Drugs on Shaw and First in Fresno, California.
A track inspector effects an on-the-spot repair of a pull-apart at Blue Island Junction, certainly among the busiest and most critical rail traffic nodes in Chicago. During cold weather, it’s not uncommon for steel rail, which contracts when chilled, to pull apart from an adjoining rail at a joint. As long as the gap between the rails is just a few inches, trains may still pass over at slow speed; however, it won’t take too long for the breach to grow, posing risk of a major derailment. Fortunately, eagle-eyed inspectors examine every inch of mainline track at least twice each week (and aways immediately following a sudden cold snap), looking for broken or defective rail and paying careful attention to rail joints and switches, the most vulnerable components of track.
To fix this particular pull-apart, the inspector merely has to heat the rail up (so it expands enough to close the gap) and secure it with fresh joint bars and bolts. To do this, he starts a controlled fire along the inside of about a hundred feet of rail—fifty feet on either side of the break. In his track inspection vehicle, he keeps a bucket (the blue bucket in the foreground of the photo) filled with a mixture of finely-shredded cellulose insulation soaked in diesel fuel. The inspector (wearing protective gloves) slaps a generous handful of this flammable concoction, which has the consistency of thick oatmeal, onto the rail above every wooden cross tie—about every eighteen inches. Before setting the whole deal ablaze, he makes a quick phone call to the local fire department to let them know not to be alarmed by the sudden clouds of black smoke coming from the railroad tracks. Then, he lights a fusee (a roadside flare) and walks along the track, touching the bright red jet of flame to each little pile of incendiary goo. Soon, it looks like a hundred campfires strung out along the section of railroad. Acrid black smoke billows into the grey winter sky. Now he waits.
Training and experience have taught the inspector that as soon as the little fires begin to die out, their fuel consumed, the steel will have warmed and expanded enough to bring the estranged sections of rail back together. Sledge hammer in hand, he walks the line amidst smoldering fires, gently tapping the rail, coaxing it to inch back into place. Once the rail ends are reunited, he quickly applies two new steel joint bars, one to the inside and one to the outside of the rail. The joint bars, about eighteen inches long, fit snuggly against the rail and span the joint. On each side of the joint, there are bolt holes through the rail, which align with holes in the joint bars. A few new bolts, a few tightening tugs with a very large wrench, and the track is as good as new, ready to handle a quarter of a million tons of freight every day. The whole repair, from discovery to remedy, only takes about 20 minutes. Time is money for the railroad.

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?
I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.
Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.
Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.
With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.
This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.
Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.
In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.
What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.
The true creator was Jonathan Ive.
A minority of people may share this perspective with me.
However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.
The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.
Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.
It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.
I have always loved music.
Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.
It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.
And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.
(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)
Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.
It was those artists who moved me to my core.
The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.
Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.
In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.
Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.
Unfortunately, I will never feel the same from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.

We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.
On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.
Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.
If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.
The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.
My wife is showing us the hotel room.
But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.
When I played the DVD that arrived, it showed footage of our arrival in the Bahamas.

マークザッカーバーグ氏の批判に、アップルは耳を傾けるだろうか。
僕にはそう思えない。アップルヴィジョンプロに夢を見せられた僕には。
メタのマークザッカーバーグ氏は、有名なポッドキャストに出演し、アップルはアイフォン以来革新的な製品を発売せず、売り上げも落ちていると批判したようだ。
アップル発祥のポッドキャストに現れ、アップルを批判すると言うのは軽いジョークに思えるが、真剣に訴えたんだろうと僕は思う。
なぜなら、今の彼はARグラスという武器を手にしているからだ。
おそらく、さまざまな関係機関や優秀なスタッフが彼を支え、それなりの目標を達成したんだろうが、パワーブック５４０cから使い続けてきた僕のような古いアップルファンからしてみれば、まだ物作りのアイデンティを彼からはまったく感じない。
これは他の、現在世界を制覇しているIT企業らも含む。
メタ、アマゾン、テスラ。マイクロソフト。グーグル。
社名が並ぶだけで、このテキストを読まれている方は名前と顔をすでに浮かべているはずだ。
僕は以前、スティーブ・ジョブズはアーティストではないと書いた。
彼は、現世界に散らばったイメージを紡ぎ合わせ、それを膨らます。そして未来へリンクさせる。それが得意だっただけだ。
実際に創作していたのはジョナサンアイブだ。少数ながらも僕のような意見を持っている方もいるだろう。
しかし、先述したIT関連の面々が、トランプ氏に再び権力が戻るとなった途端に会社の方針を覆す様子を見ていると、僕は一言、どうしても意見したいのだ。
彼らが作ったARグラスや車などには、肝心な観念が欠けている。思想という重い言葉や、軽めのアイデンティティと言い換えてもいい。
確かに、ティムクック氏やアップルの現在のスタッフらは、発売前の商品に関して口を滑らせることが多くなった。
僕は、以前から書いているように音楽が大好きだ。
外界を断ち、アーティストらがスタジオにこもって、怒りや憎しみ、喜びや悲しみを一心不乱になって一音に吹き込む。何かを託すと言ってもいい。
そして、完成したアルバムを発表し、どんな思いを込めて制作したのかを語る。（僕が好きなプリンスはほとんど語らなかったので、完成された作品を理解する必要があった）
アルバムが完成し、発表するまで、彼らはひとことも語らない。
僕の胸を震わせたのは、そんなアーティストらだった。
僕の中に淡く灯っているアップルの革新性は、いまでも消えていない。
それは昨年、大失敗だと批判されたアップルヴィジョンプロでさえも消すことはできない。むしろ、アイフォン以上の強烈な光を放っている。
ただの斬新な電化製品ではなく、細かな電気部品の向こうに観念や思想を感じるからだ。
残念ながら、メタのARグラスやテスラの車に、僕がその観念や思想を感じることは今後もないだろう。
長々と書いてきたが、結論は以下の記事だ。

一読すると、ティムクック氏も他のIT会社同様、魂を売ったのかと思われるがそうではない。
ティムクック氏は個人的にトランプ氏へ献金をするが、アップル社だけは他社と同じようには献金していない。
アップルは、トランプ氏になびかなかったのだ。
アップル社の観念や思想とは、具体的に何かと訊かれたら、僕はこう答える。
アップルとは、自分自身を信じる人間が集まっているグループだ。
たぶん、天国のスティーブ・ジョブズは、僕がクソ真面目に書いたテキストを、鼻で笑っていることだろう。
トランプ氏に媚びない会社。
それがAppleさ。:)

新婚旅行の8mmフィルムが数十年ぶりに出てきて、DVDに焼きました。
１９９３年６月６日、僕らは結婚し、そのままニューヨークを経由して、バハマのナッソーへ向かいました。
目的地は、亡くなられたダイアナ妃が新婚旅行へ向かったピンクサンドビーチです。
もしもこれからバハマへ向かうならば、参考に見てもよいかもしれません。
泊まったホテルは、今はもうないラマダホテル。
妻がホテルの部屋を紹介しています。
でも、今はリアルタイムで美しい景色が見られますね。

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

“Cuatro Torres Business Area” (CTBA). Antigua Ciudad Deportiva del Real Madrid. Paseo de la Castellana. Los componentes más recientes de la Skyline de Madrid
El parque empresarial “Cuatro Torres Business Area” (CTBA) se edifica sobre los terrenos de la antigua Ciudad Deportiva del Real Madrid al extremo norte del paseo de la Castellana, conformado por cuatro rascacielos, los edificios más altos de España. El conjunto comprende un anillo de circulación subterráneo que da servicio a aparcamientos y plantas bajo rasante de cada uno de los edificios. Proyectado en 2002-2003, la construcción se inició en 2004 y la urbanización se culmina en 2009 con la inclusión de algunas interesantes esculturas como la Menina de Manolo Valdés entre las torres CajaMadrid y Sacyr Vallehermoso.
En este recinto se situará además el Centro Internacional de Convenciones de Madrid con un auditorio principal con capacidad para 3.500 personas, según proyecto del equipo formado por Emilio Tuñón y Luis Moreno Mansilla ganadores del concurso convocado en 2007. El edificio propuesto se conforma mediante un círculo erigido verticalmente que se presenta como un disco solar delante de las dos torres centrales.
El Conjunto es fruto de la operación urbanística llevada a cabo por el Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, siendo presidente el empresario Florentino Pérez, por lo que algunos han dado a las torres el nombre de cada uno de los jugadores “galácticos” que fichó el citado presidente como consecuencia de la operación: Figo, Ronaldo, Zidane y Beckham.
Torre CajaMadrid (inicialmente Torre Repsol)

Estructura: Halvorson & Partners - Gilsanz Murray Steficek LLP. Instalaciones: Aguilera Ingenieros. Responsables del proyecto de construcción José Ramón Burgos Morcillo y Pedro González Lejarriaga
Es el edificio más alto de España, con 45 plantas y 250 metros de altura. Proyecto: 2003. Edificado entre 2004 y 2009. La estructura está compuesta por un entramado de acero, que permite una planta rectangular de oficinas, soportado por dos grandes núcleos de hormigón, que encierran los elementos de comunicación vertical y de servicio, que se unen en el remate superior mediante un elemento tipo puente. La fachada se cubre de vidrio en la zona de oficinas y de placas de acero inoxidable en los núcleos de hormigón. Las plantas de oficinas se agrupan en tres cuerpos prismáticos intercalados entre los dos núcleos verticales que los sustentan, conformando una geometría que da su característica imagen al edificio.
Una vez iniciada la construcción, Repsol decidió cambiar la ubicación de su futura sede por lo que el edificio en obras fue adquirido por Caja Madrid con el fin de convertirlo en su sede principal en 2009
Torre Sacyr Vallehermoso (Hotel Eurostars Madrid Tower)
Arquitectos: Carlos Rubio Carvajal y Enrique Álvarez-Sala Walter (R&AS).
Estructura: MC2, Julio Martínez Calzón y Miguel Gómez Navarro. Instalaciones: UTE Aguilera-Úrculo.
Proyectada en 2003, promovida por el Grupo SYV, se construye entre 2004 y 2008, con una altura de 236 metros y 52 plantas
Los autores conciben el edificio a partir del análisis de geometrías rigurosas, capaces de albergar diferentes usos aportando la flexibilidad necesaria. Se configura mediante la superposición de un centro de congresos, un hotel de gran lujo, que ocupa los dos tercios inferiores, y unas oficinas en alquiler, sobre las 17 plantas superiores.
Su planta se genera mediante un triángulo equilátero cuyos lados son curvos, tres arcos que envuelven a tres cilindros situados en posición triangular, optimizando la longitud de la fachada en relación con la superficie construida. Tres pliegues verticales dividen el edificio en gajos, haciéndolo más esbelto e introduciendo luz y ventilación en el núcleo central. Las fachadas, compuestas de una doble piel formada por escamas de vidrio y aluminio que ofrecen una resistencia mínima al viento, presentan una imagen singular dentro del Conjunto, con su tonalidad oscura.
Torre de Cristal
Arquitecto: César Pelli.
Colaboradores: Íñigo Ortiz y Enrique León.
Promovido por la compañía aseguradora Mutua Madrileña, es el edificio más alto de España, junto a la Torre Caja Madrid, con una altura de 250 metros distribuidos en 52 plantas. Proyectada por el arquitecto de origen argentino afincado en New York Cesar Pelli en 2003, se edifica entre 2004 y 2009. Las plantas varían a lo largo de la altura, generando cuatro planos con biseles oblicuos, que confieren a las fachadas del edificio, formadas por muros cortina de vidrio, la apariencia de un cristal tallado, rematado por un plano inclinado bajo el que se conforma un jardín cubierto de invierno. Un gran bloque de cristal transparente, cuyas caras captan la luz “como si fuera un diamante tallado”. La variedad de los ángulos que delimitan cada uno de las caras da vida y movimiento a la torre a través de la diferente intensidad de luz que éstas reflejen durante el día. Su destino es el de oficinas de alquiler. Uno de los atractivos del edificio, que finalmente no autorizó el Ayuntamiento, era una especie de faro situado en su parte más alta, destinado a iluminar el invernadero, que haría visible el rascacielos desde varios puntos de la ciudad.
Torre Espacio
Arquitecto Henry N. Cobb de la firma Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, fundada por Ieoh Ming Pei. Colaborador: José Bruguera.
Colaborador en la dirección de las obras: Reid Fenwick Asociados, de Madrid. Estructura: MC2. Instalaciones: R. Úrculo Ingenieros Consultores.
Proyectada en 2003, promovida por la Inmobiliaria Espacio S.L, se construye entre 2004 y 2008, con una altura de 236 metros y 57 plantas sobre el nivel del suelo. La fachada está formada por un muro cortina de vidrio. Las plantas, varían de forma y dimensiones a lo largo de su altura, pasando del cuadrado en la base, hasta alcanzar la forma de un ojo abierto, es decir dos arcos de circunferencia secantes, en su culminación; dando al edificio una fisonomía exterior muy variable, desde un prisma a una botella, dependiendo del punto de vista. Las aristas son curvas y las fachadas no son planas, por lo que hubo que dotar de un especial diseño a los soportes de hormigón. Alberga, entre otras, oficinas de empresas pertenecientes al grupo promotor como la Inmobiliaria Espacio o la constructora OHL, y algunas embajadas. Cuenta con dos áreas de descanso de ocho metros de altura situadas en las plantas 18 y 33.
