1912 dated postcard view of a parade in Vallonia, Indiana. A crowd was on hand to watch the parade, but only two wagons and a pair men on horses with flags and banners were captured in this scene. This appears to be the main street in town. The street was unpaved and wasn’t identified. The flags indicate it was a holiday celebration.
The second wagon was clearly carrying Vallonia Band members and the first wagon may have been carrying band members as well. Another postcard shows the Vallonia Band, but was undated. There were 12 members when that postcard portrait was taken and they were wearing uniforms with caps. In this parade postcard, the drummer (or drummers?) on the second wagon wasn’t wearing a uniform.
Two business signs at the left edge of the scene are unreadable. The two signs near the center of the scene are unclear, but one of them includes the name _. F. TURMAIL at the bottom. The Jackson County Genealogy Trails website lists George F. Turmail as a merchant in Vallonia back then.
From a private collection.

This project is part of the Ars Electronica Garden Santiago de Chile. This Garden presents the SPACE / EARTH / WATER TRIAD. The three conceptual axes embody the main components of Chilean geography and the wide diversity of its natural terrain from north to south. They comprise projects developed by artists together with scientists, live-streamed performances, excursions, videos, and virtual environments at the crossroads of arts, science and technology. With the aim of exploring creative imaginaries that challenge traditional boundaries among these fields of knowledge, all of them outline alternative ways of living, thinking and feeling within our ever-changing environment.

One of the most exciting components of A+ Partners in Education, Battle of the Books gets fifth grade students excited about reading. A lively academic competition, Battle of the Books improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, and teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship. The 2015 competition runs concurrently at Howard, Mt. Hebron, Oakland Mills, River Hill and Wilde Lake high schools.
Teams of five students and one adult coach each read the same 16 pre-assigned books over four months. Selected by HCLS instructors and HCPSS media specialists, titles include a wide range of reading levels and subjects. Thanks to generous sponsors, all teams receive a set of books. In addition to reading the books, teams choose a team name then dress accordingly.
During the "battle" (a 50-question exam), a moderator asks questions that relate to one of the following: a direct quote from one of the book characters; a statement about something that happens in the book; a passage taken directly from the book; details about an illustration or picture. Winning teams receive prizes.
Here's another shot i took of Ground Components in the studio. It appeared in Australian Rolling Stone last month to illustrate an article about their new album. It's nothing spectacular, but i like their relaxed, friendly vibe in this.
THe shoot wasn't without its dramas. About 15 minutes before the band arrived at the studio i was adjusting the big boom arm that holds the 1000 watt light (which wasn't attached at the time). I loosened the arm and it came crashing down with a crunch on my hand.
It made quite a gash in my finger and being the big wuss i am, i began feeling faint at the sight of my own blood. Thankfully i regained my composure (thanks Cybele!) and stopped bleeding (thanks Band Aids!) before the band arrived.
Another little drama happened during the shoot as i was encouraging the boys to get animated and move around a bit. In the excitment someone stepped backwards onto the black paper roll we were using as a backdrop, it ripped and the whole contraption fell apart. No one was hurt, but several metres of paper were written off.
Despite the mishaps, it was a fun shoot and the band were a pleasure to hang out with.
I think this component forms part of the automatic railway grade crossing circuit.
