Completion 2020 by Peter Knight

Finally the last mile has been completed. And now the bike trail is done from Pittsburgh to Washington DC. The GAP runs from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, MD and is 150 miles. At Cumberland, the trail becomes the C&O Towpath to DC and runs 184 miles.

I participated in the GAP Completion ceremonies and parties on Saturday, June 15. Parked 20 miles from downtown Pittsburgh in 'Little Boston', and then rode north to join in the fun. This 20 mile section was the only portion of the 330 route from DC I hadn't ridden yet. I purposely waited for the last 1 mile to be completed at Sandcastle Water Park. What a great day I had. Excellent urban biking over there.....simply excellent!

At the start of the American Civil War in 1861 the construction of Fort Point, which had begun in 1853, was rushed to completion. Troops were ordered into the fort immediately, and before its cannon were even mounted, to make sure that local Confederate supporters did not seize the empty fort. When the soldiers began installing the guns shortly after, they positioned many weapons to face south to defend against possible land attack rather than to the north side facing San Francisco Bay against a naval assault.

Throughout the war, Union artillerymen garrisoned the fort and readied its dozens of smooth-bore cannon in anticipation of enemy attack—either by Confederate warships or by Confederate insurgents living in California. At its height of readiness in 1865, Fort Point mounted 55 cannon ranging in size from 24-lb. howitzers up through 10-inch caliber Columbian cannon. More than 500 enlisted men, officers, and civilians lived within the fort’s casemated living quarter rooms or in nearby wooden barracks.

Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, built above the fort, began in 1933 and was completed in 1937, Today, Fort Point is a National Historic Site reminding us all of the important role it played in the history of San Francisco.
