The Dohany Street Synagogue is located in the inner part of Budapest's District VII. I've been to a handful of synagogues around the world. For me, this is the prettiest one I've seen.

It was built on this spot, tree-lined Dohany Street, from 1854-59. At the time of its completion, it was the largest Jewish house of worship in the world. Even now, in 2022, it's one of the largest working synagogues in the world. (Fourth-largest, I think?) The synagogue seats about 3,000: 1,492 in the men's gallery and 1,472 in the women's gallery.

The original organ was a 5,000 pipe organ built in 1859. Among those to play it were Franz Liszt and Charles-Camille Saint-Saens. The current organ, though, dates only to 1996, due to the ravages of history.

World War II,had a devastating effect on this synagogue. It was bombed by the Hungarian pro-Nazi Arrow Cross party in February 1939. For most of WWII, it was used as the base for German Radio...and a stable. At the very end of the war, with the creation of the Budapest ghetto, this synagogue (along with nearby Kazinczy Street Synagogue) fell within the walled border of the ghetto.

As a result of its enclosure in the ghetto, this synagogue has a sad distinction of having a graveyard (mass graves, really) attached to it. This is contrary to the Torah, which states that descendants be buried outside the city.) The 2,000 or so who have their final resting place here died during the time of the ghetto -- and the ghetto was only in existence for about 2 months. (I feel dirty saying "only," as it should never have existed at all.)

So, notes on the complex itself. In addition to the synagogue, there is also the Jewish Cemetery and, next to that, the Heroes' Temple and arcade. The Heroes' Temple was built in 1931 to serve as a memorial to Hungarian Jews who gave their lives serving in World War I.

At the rear of the complex is Raoul Wallenberg Holocaust Memorial Park. (Wallenberg was responsible for saving thousands of Jews in Budapest by facilitating their escape. He later, sadly, died at Lubyanka by the hands of the Russians. That's an entirely different story and merits study on its own.)

The highlights of the park at the rear is the Memorial of the Hungarian Jewish Martyrs. The Nazis murdered at least 400,000 Hungarian Jews. It resembles a weeping willow, with leaves bearing the inscriptions of the names of viictims. Also located back here is a memorial to Raoul Wallenberg.

Lastly, in the synagogue complex, you can find the Hungarian Jewish Museum, which occupies the spot where Theodore Herzl's house stood.

If the temple looks "new," it's mainly because of the reconstruction that took place in the 1990s. The Hungarian government contributed five million dollars to its renovation and reconstruction, which took 3 years. Of the remaining twenty million dollars needed to finance it, Estee Lauder and actor Tony Curtis were among the main donors.

It's a beautiful building, faithfully restored to its original Moorish Revival style by designer Ludwig Forster. (He relied on models from North Africa and medieval Spain -- the Alhambra -- as he couldn't identify a distinctively Jewish architectural style.)

These words pale in comparison to the actual history of this place and the atrocities that were committed here. The pictures, too, do little justice. This is a place that needs to be seen in person, felt, and absorbed in the soul.
