Kavya returns in the rain for lunch. Her school is nearby and as she wades through the water with an umbrella in her hands. She must be a little hungry. But she is still very lively as she runs to her mother and hugs her. “I like both my parents equally” she says with a shy smile and hides behind her mother. Both her parents work really hard to send her to school. They make ropes from coconut coir for a living, but two years ago it was not this easy.
Kavya’s father ‘Venu’ used to be a daily wage labourer, who climbed coconut trees for a living. He would haul down coconuts and on a good day he would earn 200Rs a day. Unfortunately in Kottayam it rains 150 days in a year. “I slip when the coconut tree trunk is wet,” says Venu. So on rainy days the family was heavily dependent on ‘Ananda Velli’ Kavya’s mother.
The training was aimed to train key leaders of the communities on community mobilization, conflict management and peace building
Baran district is one of the worst drought prone areas in Rajasthan. That has impacted the communities in negative sense. In the summer season hand pumps dries up and water is not available for safe drinking water in the communities. There are some areas people have not experience even one proper shower during the whole monsoon. The community used to go a long distance to fetch the water. Since it is uncertain, people engage their children to stand in the queue to fetch the water without going to school.
In order to focus on healthy drinking water Barn ADP has been constructed seven water tanks in very strategic locations where majority community would be benefited. Chainpura Sunda is among that vulnerable area where earlier people used to go two- three kilometers to fetch the water. Since they didn’t get experience with good availability of water and shower during dry season. Villagers of Chainpura Sunda are very privileged and thankful to World Vision India that, yet community has been received relief after a long time.
Jai Maharastra Ganesh Maidan, a BMC (Brihanmumbai
Mahanagar Corporation) School, in Azadnagar conducts day
and night school for children. Of the total 1200 children,
125 attend night school. Night classes are conducted from 6 pm
to 9 pm.
The school has a water tank that is used by the children for
drinking purpose. However, the water tank is always left open
as it has no cover. Adding to the misery, the same water tank is
used as a swimming pool after 9.00 pm by the youth and
children of the community. This poses a tremendous health
hazard to children of the school. This was noticed by the World Vision Child Protection Committee. We informed the school management about the plight of the water tank and the risks posed by this. The very next day, the tank was cleaned up with the support of BMC. Moreover, the tank is now covered providing children with access to safe drinking water.
