The South Chicago Art Center was founded in 2001 to provide a safe place for children after school and to bring arts education to local schools. Kids who go here learn to imagine, to see differently through the eyes of the arts and to feed their self esteem and curiosity.

Calumet Park was first conceived in 1903, as part of the South Park Commission’s revolutionary plan to create neighborhood parks in overcrowded city neighborhoods. The original park was supposed to be a mere 40 acres; by 1924, when the fieldhouse was constructed, the park was actually 200 acres. When visiting Calumet Park, stop by the Southeast Chicago Historical Society at 9801 S. Avenue G.
We then walked on to meet little Gangamma. This ten year old was all eager to take us to her house. Her parents were waiting near her broken house – evidence of another dream shattered. The father explained the fine details of how they had to abandon their only house only to find it collapse completely 30 minutes later. But Gangamma kept quiet. Instead she brought us her soiled school bag and damp school books - a stark reminder that she too was not spared. The broken house or the failed crop did not bother her much as her wet books did.
