The former home of U.S. Steel's South Works is now 573 acres of vacant land awaiting redevelopment right next to South Chicago. Massive walls that stored iron ore, coke and limestone for steelmaking are the last vestige of the site's history. This ore wall picture was taken by our local artist Elisa Botello.

The original park was supposed to be a mere 40 acres; by 1924, when the fieldhouse was constructed, the park was actually 200 acres. The children gather at a community center in an urban village in North Kolkata where World Vision India works. A train station running adjacent to a large canal which divides the community into two distinct halves, make this a picturesque setting. It’s just the place for children to experiment with photography. The children look confused as cameras are handed out to them and their expression turns to joy as they are told they can take photos of whatever they like in their community.
The next day they return with photos of the station, the canal, a celebration in the night, children playing various games. They listen curiously as they are taught about the basics of photography and are sent out again into their community to experiment with light and colours. They are told to profile the life of one of the children sponsored through World Vision India.
They nail the brief brilliantly and capture life in motion to the full. There seems a very natural attraction to the medium of photos as children listen eagerly as the final brief is told to them - What does world vision India do in your community? How are these activities benefitting children and how are these activities helping them stay in good health? Some children decide to follow the lead of health and take pictures of children playing and eating healthy food. Some look for family and children who have benefitted from World Vision India’s work. Others seek our World Vision India’s initiatives by interviewing World Vision staff.
Rakhal Naiya is 15 years old. He was the lone boy in this exercise but he never lost his interest and excitement throughout. His interpretation of 'I am healthy' is very typical of a teenage boy. Open grounds for playing sports, games, dancing in celebrations etc... When asked to look for World Vision initiatives he found out about the water filters which were distributed and the health appraisal of sponsor children. All through his experiments with camera angles and composition show that he is naturally talented when it comes to photography.
Hirdamal is small, remote and tribal village. About 116 families with 614 people live in this village. There are 57 POP families residing in the village. 12 SHGs are functioning in the village. Among them Savitri Bai Phule SHG members are very active, organized and empowered. They were involved in planning, designing and implementation of the development program. Women were planning to initiate income generation activities jointly but due to financial problem they were unable to start the programs. But they have strong unity among each other and wanted to make a dent in the village.
Seeing their interest the CDC Ms. Sushila Valvi, motivated and guided them to start a flour mill which is a need of the village. They have requested to World Vision through Village Development Committee for the same. So WV came forward to support financially to Savitri Bai Phule SHG. In their village there was no flour mill so people used to go to other villages for any kind of milling which is 3 – 5 kms away from their village. Even the women had to spend half a day for this purpose. The SHG planned to set up a big flour mill. It will help them to generate income source as well as people will be benefited at their own village as they need not go to other villages for milling purpose.
During last year ADP provided a big flour mill to SHG along with the contribution of the SHG and it is being run successfully. SHG hired a technical person cum operator named Saibu who can run the mill regularly. So with the help of technical person they were empowered to create income source. The daily income is Rs 400/- and the monthly income is Rs 12000/-. They are providing Rs.100/- to the operator and also spending Rs. 125/- for diesel and kerosene purpose. Every day they are able to save Rs.175/- to Rs.200/-. Due to their continuous efforts and good monitoring they were able to save money in the bank.
This program really helped them to create income source throughout the year. Poorest households are highly benefited as they received profit equally. The villagers also directly benefited as they are able to access flour mill in their own village and no need to go outside. The status of women has improved in the community as they are empowered to generate income source and children are enjoying good health and education. Food security is ensured in the families. The members of the SHG are planning to learn the operating system so that the money need not go to others.
Seeing this impact in the village, the women of the SHGs are truly happy and proud to be member of SHGs. Truly unity is key to brining lasting changes in the lives of children, families and their communities. Members of the SHGs are deeply thankful to World Vision as their lucrative income source is created.
