This was at the Northern Communicators conference Yellowknife, NWT. June 2010. I'd listened to his podcast for years. Great guest speaker. Alas, the photo's not the best (sorry Jesse! Doesn't do you justice!)

These are five drying lino block proofs of Countess, Lady Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), who published the first computer program.* She worked together with Charles Babbage, the inventor of the Difference Engine and the Analytical Engine (the first - analogue! - computers), correcting his notes on how to calculate Bernoulli Numbers with the Analytical Engine. More importantly, she (a great communicator, daughter of mad, bad and dangerous to know Lord Byron) was able to understand and explain the workings of the analytical engine and the potential of computing machines. Her comments seem visionary to the modern reader. Babbage called her the Enchantress of Numbers and the Princess of Parallelograms.

The prints are in gold, purple and turquoise water-based block printing ink on mauve Japanese gampi paper 15.25 inches x 10.5 inches.

In today's Metro. Plural or singular?

CLASSIC HAND COMMUNICATOR

This was my very first classic communicator.

Got it from vendor (Marco Ent) in the 1990's at a good price. It is a bit bulky in the back, but everything else is where it should be. When you flip it open the all 3 lights come on and stay on until you close it. You also hear Spock's voice saying "Enterprise..Spock here" In the early 90's this was a big deal. The flip-open antenna is made of metal but in time some of the metal has oxidized.

Eventhough I consider the recent released Art Asylum ones to be superior in everyway, I still treasure this communicator and maintain it as one of my favorite garage kits of that era.

Has opening sound, voice, and lights.

Sea Grant communicators from across the nation gathered to participate in a citizen science field trip at Honeymoon Island State Park in Florida. Communicators took turns searching for bay scallops, a species that is prohibited from harvest in Southwest Florida due to low populations caused by water quality problems and harmful algal blooms. Florida Sea Grant agent Betty Staugler led the group project and taught participants how to snorkel and search for scallops along a transect. She is currently conducting restoration efforts for try to bring the bay scallops back to healthy populations.
