At Beddington, south of London, a housing development known as BedZED (Beddington Zero energy development) was designed from the start to produce little waste of any sort. It was built on a depolluted plot of land, previously used by industry, and recycled materials were used in its construction.

Awareness and preparedness for emergencies at local level (APELL). APELL achieves its aims through community participation in emergency planning, via a structured dialogue between representatives of the source of the hazard (e.g. a land-owner), local authorities (the emergency services, e.g. fi re and /or police) and community leaders (who inform their constituencies). This dialogue is achieved through a ‘Coordinating Group’ which reviews the hazard situation and then proposes some measures to address the risks. The outcome is an emergency plan to which the community has provided substantial input and which is understood by ordinary citizens.

With Rememberance Day just over two weeks away I thought some history was in order.
In Calgary, Signal Hill is something of a landmark, a hub of retail shops, located along two major traffic arteries. Not being a native of Calgary I have asked many people why these numbers are here and what they mean ... no one really knew, some thought it was to signal approaching planes ... though that did not explain what the numbersmeant. I finally researched it and it is much more interesting than that. These are the regiment numbers of the Alberta contingent of the Canadian Expeditionary Force from WWI. These soldiers hauled 16,000 stones from the river to mark their battalion numbers on this hill. Typical for WWI, very few of these soldiers came back; those who did requested that the provincial government make this hill an historic site in memory of the fallen ... the saddest part of the story is that it took 73 years for the provincial government to do so and none of the soldiers were alive to see it.
