Garden Warbler is one of Britain’s most nondescript birds earning it the true moniker of little brown job.
A warbler of dense scrub understorey and woodland edge, the Garden Warbler is more often noticed in well-wooded countryside rather than in gardens. It is evenly coloured brown with beige underparts, and has a stout black bill and beady black eye. Garden Warblers spend our winter months south of the Sahara.
The Garden Warbler comes into its own when it sings, with rich, fluty whistling notes. In addition to its lack of a black cap, to the practised ear its song distinguishes Garden Warbler from the commoner and more widespread Blackcap.

Another neglected commoner, house wrens occur nearly everywhere from just a bit above the Canadian-US border to Tierra del Fuego. What they lack in flashy plumage patterns is made up by what the Cornell Ornithology Lab's website describes as their "effervescent voice" calling out their "rush-and-jumble song."
The Dinh Vua Mèo, or Hmong King’s Palace, was built in the early 20th century by Vuong Chinh Duc, a powerful Hmong leader whose wealth stemmed from the opium trade. The palace is a stunning fusion of architectural styles, combining Chinese feng shui principles, French colonial influences, and Hmong cultural motifs. Constructed by skilled Chinese craftsmen, its intricate carvings, tiled roofs, and strategic design reflect both the grandeur and functionality required during a time of political autonomy and territorial pride. Today, it stands as a symbol of the Hmong people’s cultural resilience and the region’s layered history.
Local folklore surrounding the palace tells of a forbidden love between a Hmong prince and a commoner, a romance that defied the rigid social expectations of the time. When their secret was uncovered, the couple faced the wrath of the king, who forbade their union. The tale diverges in its endings: one version recounts their tragic separation, with sorrowful echoes said to haunt the palace halls; another imagines a daring escape into the remote mountains, where they lived in anonymity but free to love. This duality—tragedy and freedom—adds an air of mystery and poignancy to the palace’s storied past.

Taken in the New Forest. One of many New Forest Ponies who roam free on the common ground
It’s easy to see why New Forest ponies are often mistaken as being wild – they are free to roam all around the Open Forest and can appear more or less anywhere at anytime. Their movements are restricted only by fencing and cattle grids on every road that crosses the New Forest area boundary (not the general National Park boundary).
Commoners
New Forest pony owners are known as ‘Commoners‘, a term that dates back to when the New Forest was first created in 1079 by King William I.
The ponies that you see today on the Open Forest are being allowed to graze (‘depastured’). This is a right of the Commoner, and again comes from the time of King William, when local animal owners were permitted to graze their livestock on open Crown land, in return for abiding by the very strict Forest Laws put in place to protect the natural wildlife of the area.
However, this right (along with several other commoning rights) is attached to the property of the Commoner, not the person.
The ponies in the New Forest are cared for not only by the owners but also by Agisters, the employees of the Verderers of the New Forest. The Verderers are the local governing body for all present day New Forest activity regarding animal ownership and land use.
The most intense times for controlling the ponies are the ‘drifts‘ which take place around autumn time. All New Forest ponies are rounded up by the Agisters, Commoners and volunteer helpers and are counted for, marked and checked over for any health problems that might have gone unnoticed.
A marking fee is paid to the Agisters, by the Commoners, for every New Forest pony that is depastured. This fee goes towards covering the cost of managing the animals and the Agister’s duties. When a payment is received the tail hair of that pony is cut a certain way, with each Agister having his own unique cut pattern.
A New Forest pony must also be branded to identify the owner, before they are allowed to roam freely.
Once the drifts are complete, auctions are held at the Beaulieu Road Pony Sales, a few miles east of Lyndhurst. The original holding pens, recently replaced and improved, were once in Lyndhurst but were moved to their present location shortly after the railway line was extended across the New Forest, making after-sales transport of livestock a bit easier.
The earliest official New Forest pony sales were recorded almost a century ago. (Wikipedia)
Another shot of the Great Northern Diver at Farmoor Reservoir in Oxfordshire. The largest of the UK's divers, it has a bigger, heavier head and bill than its commoner relatives. It is largely a winter visitor to our shores although some non-breeding birds stay off northern coasts in the summer.
It seems a little perverse uploading a photograph of a Bluetail that doesn't show its blue tail but I do like that creamy throat marking when viewed front-on. Back in the 1980s Red-flanked Bluetail was top of nearly every birder's wish list. In 1993 I drove from Yorkshire to Dorset just to see my first British Red-flanked Bluetail. But they have become much commoner since, and I have seen several without really trying, plus many abroad. But they are still one of my favourite birds and I still get a thrill each time I see one. To give an idea of their former rarity only four were seen from the first in 1903 in Lincolnshire through to 1960. There were four during the 1970s, and three in the 1980s until I saw my first in 1993. This was the twelfth ever to be recorded in Britain, yet just this year so far there have been eight seen in Britain. It colonised Finland in the 1940s and the population there has increased and expanded in range. There is currently a rather vague population estimate of between 300 and 1,500 pairs and apparently this species has had a good breeding season this year. But weather plays a part too as numbers vary from year to year. 2016 saw a record 26 Red-flanked Bluetails in Britain but 2017 and 2018 combined only saw ten. This years run of easterly winds at migration time certainly plays a big part in the numbers turning up here. I photographed this one at Spurn in East Yorkshire last week.

Orchis purpurea (Orchidaceae) 115 25
Orchis purpurea was first described by Hudson from the county of Kent (England) in 1762 and its name refers to the purple coloration of the inflorescence. It has long been known commonly as the Lady Orchid, this being a reference to the individual flowers resemblance to the flowing skirts of the countrywomen of the time. It should be remembered however that despite this feminine allusion, an appendage similar to that of Orchis anthropophra (the Man Orchid) is visible beneath the skirt !
This is one of Europe's commoner Orchis with a range extending from the south of England, across central and southern Europe into Russia. It can also be found in parts of north Africa. Orchis purpurea is one of the tallest and most robust of the continents orchids which in exceptional cases can reach nearly a meter in height and produce multiple stems from a massive rosette of broadly lanceolate, shiny leaves. It is also known to form huge colonies in its favored locations.
Orchis purpurea is essentially a species that exhibits little significant variation in stature or form but lip patterns and coloration can differ, with the named variety albflora a frequently encountered example. This variety has an unmarked pure white lip with a light green hood that may be found throughout the range of the type species.
It is strictly a species of alkaline soils and favours a position in slightly shaded locations such as hedgerows, verges and light woodland. Hybridisation is common and particularly with the similar Orchis militaris with which it frequently occurs. Intermediates do however seem to appear in relative isolation and rarely form the swarms that can be common within the Serapias group.

Pannage is an ancient practice still used by local people called Commoners whereby they let their pigs lose in the New Forest to hoover up fallen acorns and beech nuts which are poisonous to ponies and cattle. This pig is doing just that and has an acorn in its mouth. Pannage usually lasts around 60 days and started on11th September this year.

Kadaň, Franciscan monastery, West Bohemia
The late medieval pilgrimage monastery in Kadaň was the cynosure of monarchs and diplomats, priests and secular pilgrims, artists and patrons, noblemen and commoners for more than half of a millennium. One of its first benefactors, John Hassenstein of Lobkowicz, conceived the construction as a reflection of his impressions from sacred places of Jerusalem.
The spiritual management was entrusted to the members of the Franciscan-Observant order. Artistic merit was impressed into the monastery by its builders mainly in the basement vault (perhaps the first one in the Czech lands), by painters around Lucas Cranach senior (and by other artists later on) in decorations of walls of the entire interior of the Fourteen Holy Helpers Church and by sculptors mainly in their sepulchral works, as the church was also used as significant burial place.
______________________________________
St. Matthew and the Angel was painted by Caravaggio at a later time, but the first version of the painting was rejected due to excessive realism.
St. Matthew is represented with the appearance of an almost illiterate commoner, to whom the angel must direct his hand to help him write. Of this work, which was lost in Berlin during the Second World War, only photographic copies remain.
In the second version of the painting, however, Matthew is always represented in the act of composing his Gospel with the angel providing suggestions.

From a cutting taken last autumn - I didn't realise it was as vigorous as the commoner species, but it took just as easily and is already a few feet tall although in a relatively small pot...
Edited: The more I look at this, the more I think these don't look like the distinctive balls of the Orange-ball-tree, and wonder if it might not be Buddleja x weyeriana - the hybrid of B. globosa and B. davidii... I will watch it and its parent grow...

Epping Forest is a 2,400-hectare area of ancient woodland, and other established habitats, between Epping in Essex to the north, and Forest Gate in Greater London to the south, straddling the border between London and Essex. It is a former royal forest, and is owned and managed by the City of London Corporation.
For nearly a thousand years people have been grazing cattle on Epping Forest. It is part of the commoner rights to be able to do so. Currently the only breed of cattle being grazed in the forest are English Long Horn.

Surrounding St. John the Baptist church, Markyate, Hertfordshire. This is a very old fence and I do not know who put it there. If it was the Church, then in order to place a boundary between the sacred and the profane (sheep and cow very likely being in the profane bracket). If it was the landowner, the person owning the mansion Markyate Cell, it was probably meant to keep the commoners off his land. Anyway, the iron fence is still there and telling you to respect boundaries. Leica M8, Voigtlaender NC 1.4/35 wide-open.

Simply Three - Rain (Original Song)
Though yesterday morning was exceptionally misty, this chocolate brown Common Buzzard stood out clearly whilst perched on a dead tree stump in a roadside field. A beautiful specimen of a local commoner and I personally liked they way the fog created a washed-out background.
The legend of this castle says that Charles VIII rewarded a certain Lafon, commoner by birth, for his bravery and temerity during the Italian military campaigns by making him a knight.
The king granted him also the privilege of building towers and machicolation, a right then reserved to the nobility.
The knight of Lafon also chose a star for his coat-of-arms, The Castle is in the beautiful village of Autoire , Lot , France
It was quite foggy when we got up this morning but as it is Pannage time in the Forest we thought we would go out anyway to see if we could spot any pigs. We ended up seeing about 30 dotted along our short route
Pannage, also known as Common of Mast, is the right of commoners to release their domestic pigs onto the open forest to forage for fallen acorns, chestnuts and beech mast. It’s a custom that dates back to the time of William the Conqueror, who founded the New Forest in 1079. These spiky, nutrient-rich snacks are harmless to pigs, but toxic in large quantities to the New Forest ponies and cattle who roam year-round - which is why the pigs are so important.
Each autumn, around 600 pigs and piglets snuffle through the undergrowth, clearing the forest floor in a way that’s both natural and vital. It’s the only time of year they’re allowed to roam freely - the rest of the year, they return to their smallholdings under the care of their commoner owners.
Sky burial (Tibetan: བྱ་གཏོར་, w bya gtor), lit. "alms for the birds") is a funerary practice in the Chinese provinces of Tibet, Qinghai, and Inner Mongolia and in Mongolia proper wherein a human corpse is incised in certain locations and placed on a mountaintop, exposing it to the elements (mahabhuta) and animals – especially predatory birds. The locations of preparation and sky burial are understood in the Vajrayana traditions as charnel grounds.
The majority of Tibetans and many Mongolians adhere to Vajrayana Buddhism, which teaches the transmigration of spirits. There is no need to preserve the body, as it is now an empty vessel. Birds may eat it or nature may cause it to decompose. The function of the sky burial is simply to dispose of the remains in as generous a way as possible (the source of the practice's Tibetan name). In much of Tibet and Qinghai, the ground is too hard and rocky to dig a grave, and, due to the scarcity of fuel and timber, sky burials were typically more practical than the traditional Buddhist practice of cremation. In the past, cremation was limited to high lamas and some other dignitaries, but modern technology and difficulties with sky burial have led to its increasing use by commoners.
