Lovely and sunny at home, not so along the coast at the hides, but some nice waders about. A lovely flock of Bar-tailed Godwits came and went. Nice to see them here - Blackwits are much commoner on the scrapes

The commoner of two large snipeflies with strongly marked wings. The thorax is grey on the top and sides with darker stripes along the top. The abdomen is yellow with dark spots on the tergites. The third antennal segment is pointed. The female frons is about one-quarter the head width. The second species with marked wings, R. strigosus, has the third antennal segment blunt-tipped, and females have the side of the thorax yellowish and the frons much narrower (only about one-sixth the width of the head).

Rhagio scolopaceus is a widespread and frequent species that can be encountered in a variety of habitats including woodland rides and clearings, damp meadows and moorland, usually where some trees are present. Records extend to Orkney and the Hebrides. Adults fly from May to August and males characteristically rest on tree trunks or walls with heads facing downwards. Larvae have been found in pasture and woodland soil and wood detritus of tree stumps.

* Well for almost three years Mary and I have dodged the Covid bullet . However we are now both suffering from the Virus so far the symptoms seem reasonably mild. Though I do feel incredibly tired .Hopefully all the vaccines we have had will at leat blunt its impact

This was taken on my first visit to the New Forest in Hampshire . I was hoping we might spot some of the wild ponies I had read about , I need not had worried there were ponies everywhere also pigs goats deer and donkeys roaming around; you need to drive cautiously in the Forest. The photo was taken on a walk on some of the open pastures in the forest .I have never seen unfenced horses before in England, it was rather delightful

If you have the time the text underneath gives an explanation as to how the system works its rather peculiar and archaic

The breed of horse is indigenous to the New Forest in Hampshire in southern England, where equines have lived since before the last Ice Age; remains dating back to 500,000 BC have been found within 50 miles of the heart of the modern New Forest. DNA studies have shown ancient shared ancestry with the Celtic-type Asturcón and Pottok ponies. The grass in the New Forest always looks remarkably tidy, it is a direct result of animal activity. In fact, their grazing and browsing supports rare plant species including wild gladiolus and chamomile. This in turn helps the wider ecosystem and encourages other species to thrive here including the Dartford warbler and the southern damselfly. In fact, the southern damselfly lays its eggs in the water-filled hoofprints of ponies (and cattle) nearby to the streams that pass through the New Forest.

All ponies grazing on the New Forest are owned by New Forest commoners – people who have "rights of common of pasture" over the Forest lands. The ancient tradition of commoning dates back from before the days when William the Conqueror made this area his private hunting reserve and imposed strict laws on the locals. In return for this, the locals were given the rights to graze their animals on the ‘common’ (this being the land which is now known as the New Forest).

An annual marking fee is paid for each animal turned out to graze. The population of ponies on the Forest has fluctuated in response to varying demand for young stock. Numbers fell to fewer than six hundred in 1945, but have since risen steadily, and thousands now run loose in semi-feral conditions. The welfare of ponies grazing on the Forest is monitored by five Agisters, employees of the Verderers of the New Forest. Each Agister takes responsibility for a different area of the Forest. The ponies are gathered annually in a series of drifts, to be checked for health, wormed, and they are tail-marked; each pony's tail is trimmed to the pattern of the Agister responsible for that pony.

The heron is Aosagi (grey heron, Ardea cinerea), and the turtle is Nihon Ishigame (Japanese pond turtle, auremys japonica). The former is found in Eurasia and Africa, while the latter is endemic to Japan.

Yasuda Garden is located in the eastern riverside of the Sumidagawa, which is a rare location for Daimyou's residence.

Most of the Samurais or Bushi (侍/武士, warrior bureaucrat) including Daimyous used to live on the river terrace called Yamanote (山の手, hillside or uptown) overlooking the lowland of the Sumidagawa called Shitamachi (下町, lowland town or downtown) to the east. Shitamachi, where Yasuda Garden is located, used to be the area for commoners called Chounin (町人, civilians) such as merchants, craftsmen and fishermen.

A long shadow of Skytree is cast over Shita-machi (下町) or the old downtown of Tokyo.

The straight river in the photo is Ara-kawa (荒川), which is a canal constructed in the early 20th century to reduce the risk of flooding in Shitamachi. It, however, cut and killed the meandering Naka-gawa (中川) river.

Edo or old Tokyo consisted of two parts: Shitamachi and Yamanote (山手 hillside).

Shitamachi is located on the delta created by Sumida-gawa, Naka-gawa and Edo-gawa rivers. It was basically the area for Chounin (町人) or commoners. Shitamachi had been the incubator of popular cultures flourished in the Edo era such as Kabuki, Ukiyoe, Sumo etc..

Yamanote is located on the river terrace of the Sumida-gawa. It was basically the area for the Samurai ruling class (武士).

After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, while Yamanote developed as the commercial centre of Tokyo, Shitamachi was left behind from the development, which is apparent if compared with the cityscape from Tokyo Tower.

The Pale-bellied Brent Goose (in the middle of three) shows the strong contrast between breast and belly compared with the more suffused and commoner Dark-bellied variety. Two races of Pale-bellied birds visit Britain from Greenland and Spitsbergen. There seemed to be only one Pale-bellied bird amongst a large flock of Dark-bellied ones feeding on land at Farlington Marshes.

The Waite Building was constructed in 1893. It housed the Fair department store on the ground floor, along with offices upstairs— including attorneys, accountants and the Colfax Commoner newspaper.

The building was remodeled in 1916 and sometime in the 1920s, the Waite Block was purchased by Linville Brothers Furniture, who opened a passageway between this building and the Ellis building next door. During the 50s or 60s the entire facade of the building was sheathed in aluminum siding— covering all of the upper windows.

The building continued to house furniture stores (most recently Hunter's Furniture) into the 2000s. In the early 21st century, the aluminum facade was removed, returning the building to it's 1916 state.

Brooches have a rich history that dates back to ancient times. Originally, they were used as practical items to secure garments. However, over time, they evolved into decorative jewelry worn by royalty, nobility, and commoners. In different cultures, brooches have taken on symbolic meanings and have been used to express status, identity, and beauty.

The two birds were quenching their thirst side by side, but this image is a blend of two views in order to show each in good detail.

The Red Lotus

The hardest friendships are those born in the midst of adversity. The Red Lotus clan and the Sakura Clan were once greatest allies that fought countless wars hand in hand in order to fend off other kingdoms from overtaking their territories. Both lands were rich in nature, fresh produce and animal life.

As the legends speak, an enemy clan disguised themselves as the Red Lotus and destroyed one of Sakura's villages. It caused retaliations and despite multiple pleas from the real Red Lotus clan, the Sakura clan closed its gates forever.

The feud continued for thousands of years till only very few knew of the history of both the clans. However, are the Gods and goddesses tired of this long never ending story? Is that the reason why they somehow brought both heirs to the throne to meet?

There is no such thing as a coincidence, they say. She was out on a mission, disguised as a commoner. No one would realize she was actually part of the upper world. He, on the other hand was riding as a soldier, no colors, no announcements of his true linage and no companions. They crossed paths during a rest stop at the same Inn located in between their territories.

There was injustice in view, some travelers were harassing one of the servers. She interjected, demanding it to end, due to her petite frame, she was not taken so seriously. When the brawl started, she was outnumbered despite trained to defend herself. Lucky for her, he walked in just in time and they fought side by side, just like their ancestors before them.

On discussions about each of their missions, they discovered they were of enemy clans. They should have ended each other then but considering they already fought side by side, it was difficult. A secret friendship was in order. They kept in touch through sneaky letters. They met outside their territories. There was so much discussions about the future of their clans. So much hope for a truce and an alliance once again. Only time was in the way.

She packed the best textiles and herbal tea for him to take back to his family. He would always play a tune for her and bring her the red lotuses from his lands as a symbol of hope for the future and betterment of both their people.

P.S. Been ages since our last photo collab! Between work and timezones. I am so happy to have finally gotten the chance! Thank you Ji, for being the best story teller/ photo planner! He will post his version soon! Check out his stream!

Another pair of Japanese cultural icons on the wall of the passageway.

In the right is Hatsune Miku (初音ミク). It was originally the name given to a vocal synthesiser application first released in 2007 by Crypton Future Media Inc.

Later, its anthropomorphic mascot character was promoted as a virtual singer and became an icon of the Japanese Otaku (おたく 御宅) culture that is associated with Manga, Anime, computer games, cosplay and pop idols.

In the centre is a partial copy of the famous woodblock printing in the 19th century by Toushuusai Sharaku (東洲斎写楽) of Segawa Kikunojou III (三代目瀬川菊之丞), a Kabuki “actor” playing the wife of a Samurai. Kabuki is a classical theatre play performed only by men.

Kabuki used to be a negative word for outlaws, rogues, punks etc.

A woman named Izumono Okuni (出雲阿国) invented a dance performance that incorporated their fashions and styles in the early 17th century. It was originally performed by women and became a popular entertainment for the commoners. I suppose it was like cabaret shows in the beginning.

Kabuki was drastically transformed by the government ban in 1629 on women’s performance in Kabuki as the Confucius government thought it was against the public morals. The Kabuki business tried to survive by replacing women with boys, which was also banned.

The present form is their desperate last resort, with which they barely survived.

Seems like I was just chasing goldeneyes up and down the Yellowstone River, though it's actually been a few months. This "commoner", a Common Goldeneye female, is actually at a SoCal coastal wetland, busy diving with her friends. Second year in a row I've seen them here, and for me, NEVER before that. Ever. What a treat. They need to bring the boys with them though - I didn't see any this time or last year either.

Crataegus monogyna, known as common hawthorn, oneseed hawthorn, or single-seeded hawthorn, is a species of flowering plant in the rose family Rosaceae. It is native to Europe, northwestern Africa and West Asia, but has been introduced in many other parts of the world.

Other common names include may, mayblossom, maythorn, quickthorn, whitethorn, motherdie, and haw.

This species is one of several that have been referred to as Crataegus oxyacantha, a name that has been rejected by the botanical community as too ambiguous. In 1793, Medikus published the name C. apiifolia for a European hawthorn now included in C. monogyna, but that name is illegitimate under the rules of botanical nomenclature

Mythology and folklore of hawthorn.

In Gaelic this thorny shrub is known as sgitheach. Thomas the Rhymer, the thirteenth century Scottish mystic and poet met the Faery Queen by a hawthorn from which a cuckoo was calling. She led him into the Faery Underworld for a brief sojourn. Upon reemerging into the world of mortals he found he had been absent for seven years. Similar themes are common in Celtic mythology.

The hawthorn was one of, if not the, most likely tree to be inhabited or protected by the Wee Folk. In Ireland most of the isolated trees, or ‘lone bushes’, in the landscape and said to be inhabited by faeries, were hawthorn trees. Such trees could not be cut damaged in any way without incurring the often fatal wrath of their supernatural guardians. The Faery Queen by her hawthorn can also be seen as a representation of a pre-Christian archetype. She reminds us of a Goddess-centred worship, practised by priestesses in sacred groves of hawthorn. The site of Westminster Abbey was once called Thorney Island after the sacred stand of thorn trees there.

Hawthorn is at its most prominent in the landscape when it blossoms during May. One of the most popular of its many vernacular names is the May-tree. As such, it is the only British plant which is named after the month in which it blooms. ‘Thorn’ it is also the most common tree found in English place names. It is the tree most frequently mentioned in Anglo-Saxon boundary charters. It has many associations with May Day festivities. Though the tree now flowers around the middle of the month, it flowered much nearer the beginning of the month. This was before the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1752.

People used the blossoms for garlands. They also cut leafy branches and set them in the ground outside houses. These so-called May bushes were decorated with local wildflowers. Using the blossoms for decorations outside was allowed. But there was a strong taboo against bringing hawthorn into the house. In the early 1980s the Folklore Society’s survey of ‘unlucky’ plants revealed that 23% of the items referred to hawthorn. This was more than twice as many instances as the second most unlucky plant. Across Britain there was the belief that bringing hawthorn blossom into the house would lead to illness and death. Adults would scold hapless children for innocently decorating the home with the flowers.

Medieval folk also asserted that the smell of hawthorn blossom was just like the smell of the Great Plague in London. Botanists later discovered the reason for this. The chemical trimethylamine present in hawthorn blossom is also formed in decaying animal tissue. In the past, when corpses were in the house for several days before burial, people would have been very familiar with the smell of death. So it is hardly surprising that hawthorn blossom was so unwelcome in the house.

It is possible that some hawthorn folklore may have originated for the related Midland hawthorn. The latter tree may well have been commoner during the early Middle Ages. Midland hawthorn blossom gives off much more of an unpleasant scent of death soon after it is cut. It also blooms slightly earlier than hawthorn. Its blossoms would therefore have been more reliably available for May Day celebrations.

In spite of the above taboo, the leaves were eaten and were commonly referred to as bread and cheese. People used the blossom and berries to make wines and jellies. Decoctions of the flowers and leaves were also used to stabilise blood pressure. The strong, close-grained wood is good for carving and people used it for making tool handles and other small household items. Probably its greatest practical use to people has been as hedging.

Britain’s most famous hawthorn is the Holy Thorn of Glastonbury. Legend tells of how Joseph of Arimathea, the uncle of the Virgin Mary, arrived at a hill overlooking Glastonbury Tor. With him were a few disciples and two sacred vessels containing the blood and sweat of Jesus. Where he thrust his staff into the ground it sprouted and grew into a thorn tree. Though the original is obviously not there any more, one of its supposed descendants does still stand on the hill. Other offspring grown from cuttings can be found around Glastonbury and further afield. This particular hawthorn blooms twice a year, once in May and again around Christmas. A sprig of one of these Glastonbury thorns from outside St Johns Church is traditionally sent to the Queen. She is said to decorate her breakfast table with it on Christmas morning.

A red vented bulbul on a branch at my place in the country. Though the bird is a commoner, I was struck by the position it took on the branch, and of course the evening light was just gorgeous. I could just get a couple of shots before it flew away though.

I did have to crop it carefully to showcase the symmetry in the branch.

Parkini subspecies of the House sparrow, also known as the Kashmir house sparrow, is seen in very selected areas of the Indian subcontinent. Otherwise completely identical to the common House sparrow, it's only distinguishing feature is the colour of the beak. Whereas the beak of common House sparrow is black, this one's is pinkish.
