A long day alone

Emptiness is so real

Never having peace of mind

Running from what I can't see

And there is nowhere left to hide

Turn and face these empty eyes

All alone, heart untold

Break Me Down - Red

For the Smile on Saturday group - theme Pigs and Piglets

Every autumn hundreds of domestic pigs, owned by commoners in The New Forest, are allowed out to roam the Forest to eat nuts including acorns, chestnuts and beechmast which are poisonous to the New Forest ponies. A pig will pick up an acorn, crack it like a nut and eat the kernel after spitting out the harmful skin, whereas if ponies eat too many green acorns, the tannins in them can destroy their liver. Commoners must pay a fee for each pig which must have a ring put through their noses to limit ground damage by rooting (there would be no ground left if they didn't wear the rings). Like many things New Forest, Pannage, known as ‘Common of Mast’, is one of six ancient rights accorded to commoners from the era of William the Conqueror and is believed to be unique in the UK. Pannage this year started on 13 September and finishes on 14 November. It is wonderful seeing them all running around.

Chuffed to add this rare species of bee-fly to my garden list today. Hardly an award-winning shot, but it identifies the species. This southern species is moving northwards & recently reached Shropshire. Told from the much commoner dark-edged bee-fly (B. major) by the dots on the wings. Also tends to have a dark tail.

We think this may be the most northerly Shropshire record so far. Thanks to Nigel Jones for confirmation.

Tarot card XIII, the nameless:

" 'Death (XIII)' is the thirteenth trump or Major Arcana card in most traditional Tarot decks. It is used in Tarot, tarock and tarocchi games as well as in divination.

The 'Death' card commonly depicts a skeleton riding a horse. Surrounding it are dead and dying people from all classes, including kings, bishops and commoners. Some decks, such as the Tarot of Marseilles, omit the name from the card.

Some frequent keywords used by tarot readers for the interpretation of Death are:

Ending of a cycle ----- Loss ----- Conclusion ----- Sadness

Transition into a new state ----- Psychological transformation

Finishing up ----- Regeneration ----- Elimination of old patterns

Being caught in the inescapable ----- Good-byes ----- Deep change. "

The Dinh Vua Mèo, or Hmong King’s Palace, was built in the early 20th century by Vuong Chinh Duc, a powerful Hmong leader whose wealth stemmed from the opium trade. The palace is a stunning fusion of architectural styles, combining Chinese feng shui principles, French colonial influences, and Hmong cultural motifs.

Local folklore surrounding the palace tells of a forbidden love between a Hmong prince and a commoner, a romance that defied the rigid social expectations of the time. When their secret was uncovered, the couple faced the wrath of the king, who forbade their union. The tale diverges in its endings: one version recounts their tragic separation, with sorrowful echoes said to haunt the palace halls; another imagines a daring escape into the remote mountains, where they lived in anonymity but free to love. This duality—tragedy and freedom—adds an air of mystery and poignancy to the palace’s storied past.

*Third Ending: After 3 weeks on the road we started to get a little silly. Perhaps a third version of the ending? Model Trang Nguyen was a great sport.

Like much of England, the site of the New Forest was once deciduous woodland, recolonised by birch and eventually beech and oak after the withdrawal of the ice sheets starting around 12,000 years ago. Some areas were cleared for cultivation from the Bronze Age onwards; the poor quality of the soil in the New Forest meant that the cleared areas turned into heathland "waste", which may have been used even then as grazing land for horses.

There was still a significant amount of woodland in this part of Britain, but this was gradually reduced, particularly towards the end of the Middle Iron Age around 250–100 BC, and most importantly the 12th and 13th centuries, and of this essentially all that remains today is the New Forest.

There are around 250 round barrows within its boundaries, and scattered boiling mounds, and it also includes about 150 scheduled ancient monuments. One such barrow in particular may represent the only known inhumation burial of the Early Iron Age and the only known Hallstatt culture burial in Britain; however, the acidity of the soil means that bone very rarely survives.

Following Anglo-Saxon settlement in Britain, according to Florence of Worcester (d. 1118), the area became the site of the Jutish kingdom of Ytene; this name was the genitive plural of Yt meaning "Jute", i.e. "of the Jutes". The Jutes were one of the early Anglo-Saxon tribal groups who colonised this area of southern Hampshire. The word ytene (or ettin) is also found locally as a synonym for giant, and features heavily in local folklore.

Following the Norman Conquest, the New Forest was proclaimed a royal forest, in about 1079, by William the Conqueror. It was used for royal hunts, mainly of deer. It was created at the expense of more than 20 small hamlets and isolated farmsteads; hence it was then 'new' as a single compact area.

The New Forest was first recorded as Nova Foresta in Domesday Book in 1086, where a section devoted to it is interpolated between lands of the king's thegns and the town of Southampton; it is the only forest that the book describes in detail. Twelfth-century chroniclers alleged that William had created the forest by evicting the inhabitants of 36 parishes, reducing a flourishing district to a wasteland; however, this account is thought dubious by most historians, as the poor soil in much of the area is believed to have been incapable of supporting large-scale agriculture, and significant areas appear to have always been uninhabited.

Two of William's sons died in the forest: Prince Richard sometime between 1069 and 1075, and King William II (William Rufus) in 1100. Local folklore asserted that this was punishment for the crimes committed by William when he created his New Forest; 17th-century writer Richard Blome provides exquisite detail:

In this County [Hantshire] is New-Forest, formerly called Ytene, being about 30 miles in compass; in which said tract William the Conqueror (for the making of the said Forest a harbour for Wild-beasts for his Game) caused 36 Parish Churches, with all the Houses thereto belonging, to be pulled down, and the poor Inhabitants left succourless of house or home. But this wicked act did not long go unpunished, for his Sons felt the smart thereof; Richard being blasted with a pestilent Air; Rufus shot through with an Arrow; and Henry his Grand-child, by Robert his eldest son, as he pursued his Game, was hanged among the boughs, and so dyed. This Forest at present affordeth great variety of Game, where his Majesty oft-times withdraws himself for his divertisement.

The reputed spot of Rufus's death is marked with a stone known as the Rufus Stone. John White, Bishop of Winchester, said of the forest:

From God and Saint King Rufus did Churches take, From Citizens town-court, and mercate place, From Farmer lands: New Forrest for to make, In Beaulew tract, where whiles the King in chase Pursues the hart, just vengeance comes apace, And King pursues. Tirrell him seing not, Unwares him flew with dint of arrow shot.

The common rights were confirmed by statute in 1698. The New Forest became a source of timber for the Royal Navy, and plantations were created in the 18th century for this purpose. In the Great Storm of 1703, about 4000 oak trees were lost.

The naval plantations encroached on the rights of the Commoners, but the Forest gained new protection under the New Forest Act 1877, which confirmed the historic rights of the Commoners and entrenched that the total of enclosures was henceforth not to exceed 65 km2 (25 sq mi) at any time. It also reconstituted the Court of Verderers as representatives of the Commoners (rather than the Crown).

As of 2005, roughly 90% of the New Forest is still owned by the Crown. The Crown lands have been managed by the Forestry Commission since 1923 and most of the Crown lands now fall inside the new National Park.

Felling of broadleaved trees, and their replacement by conifers, began during the First World War to meet the wartime demand for wood. Further encroachments were made during the Second World War. This process is today being reversed in places, with some plantations being returned to heathland or broadleaved woodland. Rhododendron remains a problem.

During the Second World War, an area of the forest, Ashley Range, was used as a bombing range. During 1941-1945, the Beaulieu, Hampshire Estate of Lord Montagu in the New Forest was the site of group B finishing schools for agents[18] operated by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) between 1941 and 1945. (One of the trainers was Kim Philby who was later found to be part of a spy ring passing information to the Soviets.) In 2005, a special exhibition was mounted at the Estate, with a video showing photographs from that era as well as voice recordings of former SOE trainers and agents.

Further New Forest Acts followed in 1949, 1964 and 1970. The New Forest became a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1971, and was granted special status as the New Forest Heritage Area in 1985, with additional planning controls added in 1992. The New Forest was proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 1999, and it became a National Park in 2005.

25th May 2024 The London Charterhouse is a historic complex of buildings in Farringdon, London, dating back to the 14th century. It occupies land to the north of Charterhouse Square, and lies within the London Borough of Islington. It was originally built (and takes its name from) a Carthusian priory, founded in 1371 on the site of a Black Death burial ground. Following the priory's dissolution in 1537, it was rebuilt from 1545 onwards to become one of the great courtyard houses of Tudor London. In 1611, the property was bought by Thomas Sutton, a businessman and "the wealthiest commoner in England", who established a school for the young and an almshouse for the old. The almshouse remains in occupation today, while the school was re-located in 1872 to Godalming, Surrey.

Although substantial fragments survive from the monastic period, most of the standing buildings date from the Tudor era. Thus, today the complex conveys a vivid impression of the type of large rambling 16th-century mansion that once existed all round London.

The largest of the UK's divers, it has a bigger, heavier head and bill than its commoner relatives. It is largely a winter visitor to our shores although some non- breeding birds stay off northern coasts in the summer.

The Long Mynd is a heath and moorland plateau that forms part of the Shropshire Hills. The high ground, which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, lies between the Stiperstones range to the west and the Stretton Hills and Wenlock Edge to the east. Much of it is owned by the National Trust, and is managed by the Longmynd Commoners.

The Long Mynd is one of Shropshire's highest hills and is approximately seven miles long by three miles wide. It is broadly characterised by steep valleys on its eastern flanks (such as Townbrook Valley - seen here), and a long slope to the western side rising in a steep escarpment. In the centre of the picture can be seen the pretty little town of Church Stretton.

Portrait Street - nel AD1398 Un salto indietro nel tempo, fino al Medioevo.

A step back in time, until the Middle Ages.

The rufous-bellied thrush (Turdus rufiventris) is a songbird of the thrush family (Turdidae). It occurs in most of east and southeast Brazil from Maranhão south to Rio Grande do Sul states, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and central regions of Argentina.

It is one of the most common birds across much of southeastern Brazil, and is known there under the name sabiá-laranjeira (Portuguese pronunciation: [sabiˈa laɾɐ̃ˈʒejɾɐ]). It was famously referred to in the well-known first strophe of the Brazilian nationalist poem Canção do exílio. The rufous-bellied thrush has been the state bird of São Paulo since 1966, and the national bird of Brazil since 2002.[2] It is highly regarded in Brazil, where its song is often heard in the afternoons, but specially during the nights between August and November, where thousands of them sing until the sunrise, and is often seen as "the spirit of the Brazilian commoner".

in twelfth century britain swans were hunted and eaten to the point of near extinction. these birds were seen as a delicacy not to be wasted on the likes of commoners. laws were enacted forbidding anyone to kill swans without direct permission from the crown.

"the privileged few who were allowed to breed and own swans were granted a "swan mark," the oldest of which dates to 1230."

Marks were cut into the swan's beaks with sharp knives. as the birds matured their black beaks would turn orange, and the markings - sometimes referred to as cigninota - would become even more pronounced.

Stenodema calcarata

Family: Miridae

Stenodema species are elongate grass bugs with a longitudinal furrow between the eyes. The genus is best distinguished by the coarsely and densely pitted pronotum, although the two spurs on the hind femora of S. calcarata make this species unmistakeable. S. trispinosa has three femoral spurs.

Common throughout the UK, both adults and larvae feed on the unripe grains of a number of grasses, although this species is often commoner in drier habitats than S. laevigata.

This bug overwinters as an adult and emerges in April, following which females turn green while males remain mostly straw-coloured. Late-instar nymphs have a single femoral spur. The new generation is complete by August

"The New Forest pony is one of the recognised mountain and moorland or native pony breeds of the British Isles.

All ponies grazing on the New Forest are owned by New Forest commoners – people who have "rights of common of pasture" over the Forest lands. An annual marking fee is paid for each animal turned out to graze." The fence is only there to stop the ponies wandering on to the nearby railway line.

www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/m/meadowpipit/

A small, brown, streaky bird, it is the commonest songbird in upland areas and its high, piping call is a familiar sound. In flight it shows white outer tail feathers and in the breeding season it has a fluttering 'parachute' display flight. In winter they are quite gregarious and gather in small flocks, often invisible among the vegetation, suddenly flying up with typical jerky flight.

Meadow pipit numbers in the UK have been declining since the mid-1970s, resulting in this species being included on the amber list of conservation concern.

Overview

Latin name

Anthus pratensis

Family

Pipits and wagtails (Motacillidae)

Where to see them

Found across the UK but commonest in the west and north. In winter it moves south, to more lowland areas and becomes much commoner in the southern half of the UK. Found in open country - upland moors to saltmarshes in summer, more agricultural land and marshes in winter. Will even come to suburban parks and playing fields.

When to see them

All year round. In summer most common in upland areas which become deserted in winter as birds move to more lowland habitats, some migrating to Continental Europe.

What they eat

Insects - flies, beetles and moths - and spiders

Wingspan: 2.5 to 2.9 cm. The Essex Skipper is a very common and widely distributed species in Europe, occurring throughout the region with the exceptions of Sardinia and northern Scandinavia. It's range extends eastward across Asia from Turkey to Amurland. In Africa it is common north of the Sahara, particularly on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco and Algeria.

The butterfly was accidentally introduced into Canada in 1910, and within a few decades had spread across much of North America where it is known as the European Skipper. It is believed that the major cause of this expansion was the transportation of hay bales - in one study over 5000 lineola eggs were found in a single bale.

In Britain it was first discovered in 1888 in Essex, and for many years it was thought to be restricted to south-east England. In truth it has probably always occurred over a much wider area, but equally there is little doubt that it is now far commoner and more widespread than in earlier times.

www.learnaboutbutterflies.com/Britain%20-%20Thymelicus%20...

One of the commoner garden butterflies throughout the UK, the small tortoiseshell is bright orange and black with a row of blue crescents around the wing edges. Underneath, they are camouflaged dark grey and brown. Adults emerge from hibernation on the first warm spring days and look for mates.

Females usually lay their eggs on tender, young stinging nettles in batches of 60 to 100. Caterpillars hatch after about 10 days and spin a dense web over the plant’s growing tip. The caterpillars live communally for most of their lives, dispersing to pupate. Adults often hibernate in houses, outbuildings and sheds.

Caterpillars are bristly and black with two discontinuous yellow lines along their sides. Their bright colours warn predators that they are poisonous.

New Forest Donkeys

There are many different types of livestock put out to pasture in the New Forest including the famous New Forest ponies, pigs and cows. One of the more overlooked animals which can be found in the forest is the New Forest Donkey. Found throughout the Forest, only around 300 donkeys are turned out into the forest in comparison with the 3,000 New Forest ponies. Male donkeys (known as a ‘Jack’) and female donkeys (known as a ‘Jenny’) are all owned by the New Forest’s commoners, people who live here and have rights to let their animals graze the open forest - this tradition goes back many hundreds of years.

I am going to be a bit ON/OFF with Flickr this week as I am looking after my eldest grandson who is eight, whilst his parents are in the Greek Islands. As well as doing the school run, I need to deliver him to various after school clubs which include a piano lesson, swimming, dance and football training. It appears his clarinet is missing, he needs it for his school music lesson which is on Thursday, so I will make a special trip to my daughter’s house to collect it. If it is not there then it will be at a long stay car park at Gatwick airport! I also have to check his homework which needs to be handed in at the end of the week. I could not believe just how much 'stuff' came with him and for his feet alone; school shoes, black trainers, white trainers, football boots (studs), football boots (astro), tap shoes and crocs! I have also agreed that I would take him to the local playpark, cycling in the forest and that he can make a Biscoff cheesecake! Oh, and there is a school disco as well!

All ponies grazing on the New Forest are owned by New Forest commoners – people who have "rights of common of pasture" over the Forest lands. An annual marking fee is paid for each animal turned out to graze. The population of ponies on the Forest has fluctuated in response to varying demand for young stock. Numbers fell to fewer than six hundred in 1945, but have since risen steadily, and thousands now run loose in semi-feral conditions.

The New Forest pony is one of the recognised mountain and moorland or native pony breeds of the British Isles. Height varies from around 12 to 14.2 hands (48 to 58 inches, 122 to 147 cm); ponies of all heights should be strong, workmanlike, and of a good riding type. They are valued for hardiness, strength, and sure-footedness.

The breed is indigenous to the New Forest in Hampshire in southern England, where equines have lived since before the last Ice Age; remains dating back to 500,000 BC have been found within 50 miles (80 km) of the heart of the modern New Forest. DNA studies have shown ancient shared ancestry with the Celtic-type Asturcón and Pottok ponies. Many breeds have contributed to the foundation bloodstock of the New Forest pony, but today only ponies whose parents are both registered as purebred in the approved section of the stud book may be registered as purebred.

This Church amongst the trees at Bramdean Common in Hampshire took 5 days to build in 1883. It was instigated by Reverend Alfred Caesar Bishop who was concerned that commoners, charcoal burners and itinerant seasonal workers around the common had nowhere to worship.

Note: it'll take you to the landing point first probably. If you click it again, it'll take you to the underwater room.

2nd Note: if you decide to visit and go out into the water, piranhas lurk near the octopus so give that a berth unless you like to get eaten. Fair Warning.

Credits: I do credits because I don't have the time to make everything and would rather take photos anyways. It's only fair to credit the creators just as they do in movies, books and magazines.
