The ostriches of the Kenyan savannah have never been so prized: first by jockeys, who ride them to the delight of spectators, and then by meat lovers, their flesh being reputed to be healthy.
These birds, which can reach up to 2.60 meters and weigh a hundred kilos, can kill with a single blow of their legs.
The ban imposed at the end of 2003 on the sale of meat from wild animals, apart from ostrich and crocodile, has led to an increase in demand for ostrich meat, which is high in protein and low in cholesterol. Only the meat of the legs is marketed. Ostriches are slaughtered at the age of eight months to ensure that the meat is tender.
Ostriches have a life expectancy of 70 years and females can lay up to 35 eggs per clutch, some of which are never fertilized.
I didn't see a single large dragonfly today but had a couple of butterfly sightings, also a cattle egret fly by.

I have again re-edited another of my old movie of Kestrels, I took the movie and photos in Qatar several years ago, I must warn you some may find some of the content a little gruesome, but that's nature, that is cruel to species lower in the food chain.

'WORLD FROG DAY, 20TH MARCH, 2021.'
An individual Common Frog, found in a log pile in the back garden last week. All on its own, I don't know whether it had already visited a spawning site or would be doing soon. Sadly, we don't have a garden pond, but there are houses nearby that do. Exactly what it was doing there that day must remain a mystery1

Like most insect populations around our way, number of odonata are down this year. On our pond which by now should have tens of darters, I found just 5. This male was jealously guarding its patch.

The Nightingale sang from a very awkward position, low in a gorse thicket. This was probably the best view it gave of itself during the time I photographed.

Another Common blue found enjoying the British sunshine. While I walked down a country path, my shadow disturbed a group of Common Blues, this one was the only on that stayed.
After a successful catch the kingfisher emerges beak first and flies back to its perch. It will then wriggle the fish about until it is held by its tail, before bashing it against the perch several times to kill it. This makes the fish easier to swallow and in the case of sticklebacks relaxes the spines to stop it become trapped in the kingfisher’s throat
The kingfisher then turns the fish around to position it lengthways and swallows it headfirst.
