This statue in Tuoro Park, Newport RI commemorates Commodore Matthew C. Perry (1794-1858), who is most famous for leading a flotilla of US warships into Japanese waters, forcing an end to the country’s 250 years of isolationism. A prime example of Gunboat Diplomacy, Perry’s arrival caused consternation in Japan, leading to the signing of Convention of Kanagawa. This opened up Japanese ports to trade with the United States and other western nations. Submissive Japanese plenipotentiaries are depicted on the frieze at the base of the statue.
The statue is the work of sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward and was completed in 1869. The pedestal was designed by Richard Morris Hunt, who gained later fame for designing several of Newport’s Gilded Age mansions.

Description: Commodore Lewis Warrington, the first chief of the Bureau of Navy Yards and Docks. From 1826 to 1830, Warrington served as one of three commissioners on the Navy Board, a body charged with the administration of naval materiel. Afterwards, Warrington returned to Norfolk Navy Yard to serve as commandant. In 1840, he was reassigned to Washington for another two years as commissioner on the Navy Board. After the 1842 reorganization of the Navy Department, Warrington became first Chief of the Bureau of Navy Yards and Docks.
On February 28, 1844, Warrington became interim Secretary of the Navy for a month after Secretary Thomas W. Gilmer died as a result of wounds received when the large cannon "Peacemaker" exploded during a firing demonstration on board the Princeton. In 1846, he became Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance, an office he held until his death on October 12, 1851.

The VF generation Commodore was the last of a long line of cars with that nameplate to be manufactured in Australia and one which I had almost completely forgot was also briefly sold in the UK as a Vauxhall VXR8. Not really the kind of car which would instantly spring to mind as being chosen by Matchbox to model even though they're no stranger the Holden marque.
Matchbox went for the hot SSV variant which debuted as a Police car but quickly reverted to being totally factory stock which in my opinion suits it better. Seen here in its brand new 2025 recolour proudly showing off its intricate front and rear tampo detailing.
Mint and boxed.

For the past couple of days, I've been getting into some designing on Forza Motorsport 7, and I figured I may as well do something Australian. What I have done is recreated the livery of Peter Brock's VH Commodore that won the 1982 James Hardie 1000 on the 2017 VF Commodore.
Personally, I'm happy with how it turned out. It took some time creating some decals so I could actually share this on the Storefront, but I got there in the end.
EDIT: I've chosen to make this a thing, now. There's more on the way...
