Seen here on 29th December 2021 is the Commodore Cinema in Star Street, Ryde, which opened in August 1936. At the time of opening, the Commodore was the largest cinema built on the island, having a seating capacity of 1,507 in stalls and circle levels. It was operated as an independent cinema by Ryde Cinema Ltd, a subsidiary of Southern Cinemas Ltd. It was fitted with full stage facilities and there was a cafe and a ballroom inside the building.
In 1962 it was acquired by Isle of Wight Theatres Ltd, and then in October 1965 was taken over by the Star Cinemas circuit of Leeds. They sub-divided the building into a bingo club in the former stalls area and a twin-screen cinema in the former circle, each seating 184. The ballroom was converted into Screen 3, which has a seating capacity of 176. It was taken over by the Cannon Group and re-named Cannon. The 3-screen Cannon was closed in September 1987, but the bingo club remained open.
Ten years later, the cinema section was taken over by Peter Walker and re-opened on 11th December 1997 as the Picturedrome. It was then operated by the independent chain Reeltime Cinemas. It continues today operated by Leo Leisure, as does the Cascade Bingo Club in the former stalls area. It is well known as one of the cheapest cinemas in the country, with an average ticket to see a current release being £4.00!

The fantastically named Commodore 64, Jason Chan's delicious orange-infused variation on the classic Commodore cocktail (created by Jason Chan of Seamstress, Melbourne, via Food & Wine):
2/3 oz fresh orange juice
2/3 oz fresh lemon juice
2/3 oz white creme de cacao (Marie Brizard)
1 1/3 oz bourbon (Bulleit)
.5 oz real pomegranate grenadine
dash aromatic bitters (Angostura)
Shake with ice and strain on rocks, garnish with orange wedge.
As a kid I grew up on the entire line of Commodore computers, from VIC-20, to C64 and C128, then the Amiga 500 and Amiga 2000. So not only is this lovely to sip but it also appeals to my fully developed sense of nostalgia. (You might also pretend this is a subtle nod to Lionel Richie's 70s incarnation.)
A note on the 1/3 oz measurements, which caused me some confusion: Since 1 oz = 6 tsp, I measured most of the ingredients by the teaspoonful (2/3 oz = 4 tsp). Labor intensive but worth it.

Rain was coming. The Gaudy Commodore flew off after this last satisfactory shot. There was no chance to use a more befitting background. It was all good!
My favourite Skoda vehicle shares name with this affable butterfly. Always captivated by its mature and trim saloon body build.

Canadian-built version of Czech Consul 1511 was made by company that went on to produce one of the pioneering lines of personal computers. This machine has a distinct cast-metal body and different keytops than the Consul — ones similar to those on Underwood portables of the period. Serial number Zp-120814 indicates it was made 1958-1959.

The cheap Texet calculator which I bought for the office was doa. So I ordered this on ebay and it just arrived today. Approx. 35 years old too, and it still works. It takes one of the large 9 volt batteries though. This is my second Commodore LED calculator, I have a slightly thinner black one which I keep on my desk, and that too still works while being approx 35 years old also.
