On March 31 1854 representatives of Japan and the United States signed a historic treaty. A United States naval officer, Commodore Matthew Perry , negotiated tirelessly for several months with Japanese officials to achieve the goal of opening the doors of trade with Japan.
For two centuries, Japanese ports were closed to all but a few Dutch and Chinese traders. The United States hoped Japan would agree to open certain ports so American vessels could begin to trade with the mysterious island kingdom. In addition to interest in the Japanese market, America needed Japanese ports to replenish coal and supplies for the commercial whaling fleet.
On July 8,1853 four black ships led by USS Powhatan and commanded by Commodore Matthew Perry, anchored at Edo (Tokyo) Bay. Never before had the Japanese seen ships steaming with smoke. They thought the ships were "giant dragons puffing smoke." They did not know that steamboats existed and were shocked by the number and size of the guns on board the ships.

while others like dale where running around in the rain taking pictures, i was cleaning my room and found some old tech. like this dusty old commodore 64. man when i was young u used to play with this thing and write cheesy programs and stuff. "hello world" anywho with all the corrosion and dry rot, i doubt very much this thing works. but we've had it since 1985 :)
Alas, I placed this manual with the C64 for apperances. This is the same manual from my first C64 ever, and not one that came with this new beastie. Thus, it's a little beat up

Stopped off to photograph the awesome vista near West Wyalong on the way to Adelaide (ex Brisbane) for a work conference. Of course I elected to drive rather than fly - I liked nothing better than to get out on the open road with this lovely car.

Located in Willow Creek Canyon north of Creede, Colorado. This mine was at the southern end of the Amethyst Vein and produced as much as 200 ounces of silver per ton of ore.
