Committed to our Goals

The Pella Wildlife Company is committed to the conservation of wildlife in Iowa as well as educational outreach programs in the Des Moines Area.

One of the recent additions to their program is a "photography club". Each session includes a brief educational seminar about the subject as well as some different techniques for photographing wildlife. Afterwards, you go out and practice what you learned in a natural setting.

In this case, we were shooing two black bear cubs in Waterworks Park. The lighting was good, even if the subjects were a bit fiesty. This is a fun event, and if you are a fan of wildlife I would encourage you to check them out.

From the log of the U.S. Steam Frigate Colorado, 18 January 1865: at 3:30 committed to the deep the body of Josiah Nason ...

Josiah, 23 years old, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in late September 1864 and became a member of the crew of the USS Frigate Colorado after its overhaul at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine. He voluntarily enlisted as a substitute for Elijah Blaisdell Jr of York. For this act of volunteering, he received a bounty from the Town of York of $550.

After leaving Portsmouth harbor in early October, the Colorado headed south to join the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron off the coast of North Carolina. This ship, along with 59 others, was eventually stationed off the coast of North Carolina for what would become known as the Second Battle of Fort Fisher.

Fort Fisher, an earthwork fort, lay at the tip of a peninsula that is separated from the mainland by the Cape Fear River and was designed to protect the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina. At the time of the two Battles of Fort Fisher, December, 1864, and January, 1865, Wilmington was the last port accessible to the Confederate Navy and blockade runners and thus was crucial to supplying General Lee’s armies.

One aspect of the plan to capture Fort Fisher on 15 January, was to send ashore a 2,200+ man contingent of well armed Marines and poorly armed Navy personnel to attack the sea facing wall of the fort. Josiah was one of the Navy men who went ashore. While the Marines were armed with rifles so as to provide cover for the Navy men, they were sent in to attack the part of the fort known as the Northeast Bastion armed only with pistols and cutlasses.

“As the Union tars and leathernecks rush headlong to the palisades below the Northeast Bastion, Lamb's Confederates unleash a devastating fire at close range. Armed only with revolvers and cutlasses, and under a murderous fire from the fort, the naval contingent tries in vain to breach the rebel defenses.....The attackers are mauled severely, and forced back up the beach in a perfect rout.”

(Battle Chronology, North Carolina Historic Sites: www.nchistoricsites.org/fisher/ )

Why would you have seamen, whose normal battle stations are onboard a ship, acting as a poorly armed infantry unit, charging a portion of a fort said to be 32 feet / 9.8 meters high? As could be expected, the navy suffered heavy casualties, one of whom was Josiah. The men were knowingly sacrificed so as to allow a strong Union Army force to attack at the fort’s western end and successfully overwhelm the Confederate forces.

Josiah had been severely wounded by a minnie ball that shattered his lower jaw. He was somehow transferred back to the Colorado where he was treated by the medical personnel with “stimulants” and an opiate. Even though he must have lost a lot of blood, his condition must have been somewhat stable, since it was noted in the ship’s medical records, date unknown, that he

was “rational and can swallow beef tea and gruel” and that he had “Slept well last night”.

He, however, did not survive.

Even though the official death certificate indicates that he died on 19 January, the ship’s logbook, showing Josiah’s burial at sea, was written on 18 January.

I swear when I am committed to go to bed at a decent time, EVERYONE wants to talk to me. I stayed up till 3am....I think? Or maybe it was 2, which isn't normally so bad if you're not getting up at 7:30AM. My parents, brother, grandparents, and my uncle Craig did a road trip up to Fergus Falls. It's three hours, which isn't so bad, but I forgot my headphones. It's been ages since I've been a passenger on a long trip with my family. I love sitting in the car with my music, looking out the window and thinking about whatever is on mind. Sleep was a back up plan that actually paid off.

We saw my aunt Joan whom I miss dearly, then my great great grandma Botts, went to an old neighbor's of ours at the cabin we used to own, my parents had to leave after that, but myself, my uncle and grandparents drove over to cousin and then home. To which somehow I got car sick and spent the rest of the night feeling like crap.

These two photos don't say much, but they are of my great great grandma's hands and propellers that were on my grandparent's old lawn at the cabin. I miss Fergus Falls, I miss the lake, I miss the family up here, I miss the distance from the world, I miss the relaxing freedom that came with the cabin. It was in our family for fifty years. I can't blame my grandparents for selling it. They're getting older and none of my family members can afford it, neither can they. One day I will get that cabin back, even if I have to wait.

SINGULAR ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE IN RIPON HOUSE OF CORRECTION

A man calling himself Thomas Sword, who is committed for trial at the ensuing Quarter Sessions for the Liberty of Ripon, attempted to cut his throat, a few days ago, in the following manner. It appears an iron spoon was missing from the number delivered to the prisoners at their meals, which the fellow had contrived to hide in his apparel, and in the course of the night had broken off the shank, and with the aid of a little scouring stone used in cleaning the floor, had managed to get it tolerably sharp, and commenced operations, obtaining a little blood, with which he besmeared his hands and clothes, so as to make the best appearance of his claret. This attempt failing, (as it will appear it was his intention it should,) his next plan was to tear a new blanket, with which he made a rope, fixing it to the iron grating of the window; but sly Thomas reserved three chances for escape, but not one for death - viz. the window not above four feet high being too low to suspend him , the frail rope being too weak to bear him; and at last the noose was made above a foot wide, secured by a fast knot, that it could not draw upon his neck. In this state, Mr. Stubbs, the governor found him in the morning, when he unlocked his night cell, but this did not in the least create that fear and alarm which this Sword of Subtlety intended; for all his plans were seen in their proper light, and received the treatment they so well deserved, by having him placed in double irons, he of course pretending to be mad. He enjoyed himself in that way till the surgeon arrived, who immediately bled him profusely, and finally caused his head to be shaved and well blistered, when Thomas, for fear of repetition, declares himself quite well, and laughs at the joke he has played off, but declares that this Sword shall not again be drawn to effect it’s own conquest, but submit patiently to the Sword of Justice.

RIPON SESSIONS AT RIPON COURT HOUSE

Thomas Sword, was charged with stealing a pair of half-boots on Sunday 10th July last, from Jane Smith, servant to Miss Benson, of Ripon, and also with stealing a great coat from Langthorne, near Bedale, the property of Mr. Anthony Stebbing, on 6th July last. Evidence was produced to bring the robbery clearly home to the prisoner, and the jury returned a verdict of GULITY on both charges, Sentenced to be transported for seven years.

Timeless Echoes

The Highlights of a Decade Long Musical Journey

Presented By: The Old Joes Choir

30th and 31st of August 2008 at The British School Auditorium

It has been ten years, and The Old Joes Choir has come a long way, evolving musically, and as an entity that continues to enthral its public. A decade of dabbling, experimenting and extending the boundaries and limits of sound and music has stood in good stead, enabling a group of talented and committed individuals hone and perfect something they were already good at.

It was in 1997 that The Old Joes Choir embarked upon their musical journey; a voyage that has augured well and ushered in positive change, along with a loyal audience, fans of choral music, who have stood by them through the last ten years of evolution. Thus, it is only right that The Old Joes Choir pay tribute to their loyal, unwavering fans, and their decade old journey, through a musical celebration of the last ten years.

You are welcomed to witness a unique event, involving diversity in sound and style, in celebration of a ten year old journey, as The Old Joes Choir embarks upon a voyage of rediscovery; an expedition that will strike at the very core of their musical soul. Sit back, relax, and prepare to be enthralled, as they go back to their roots to present you with our Timeless Echoes.

My mom's "Aunt Mary", as she was called, even though she wasn't her aunt, passed a way over the weekend and we made the drive to basically West Virginia for the calling hours. Mary was a very happy person and had a very distinct laugh from what I can remember. I also remember that she had the best sledding hill on her land. I don't know how many acres she had but me and my brother would go on these epic rides down the hill in her field.

Martha is my grandfathers sister. Her and Bob have been married for I don't even know how many years, but I will guess it is over 50. I get to see them every holiday and they are always in a great mood and laughing and just having fun. I wish I could have had a few more minutes with each of them so I could bust out the lights and get some real nice shots, but I didn't want to take up too much of their time.

To God Be the Glory!

July 28, 2013. Somerset, MA.

Hundreds of protesters rallied near Brayton Point Power Plant and called upon Governor Deval Patrick to close the electricity-generating power plant in Somerset. 44 of the participants committed non-violent civil disobedience and were arrested for trespassing on the plant’s grounds. The plant is one of the largest electricity generating plants in New England, using a combination of low-sulfur coal, natural gas, or oil and diesel fuel to generate 1,528 megawatts of electricity. Demonstrators asserted that in 2010, the plant emitted 6 million of tons of carbon dioxide, making it one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases in all of New England and that annually the plant emits 15,000 pounds of mercury, arsenic, lead, and other hazardous air pollutants into the air. Participants called on Governor Patrick to shut down the plant as soon as possible, while guaranteeing the plant workers and community a just transition.

I think I have committed to having a "word" for 2011. This word has been bouncing around in my brain for the past week or so, and I have a lot of ideas around it. I think it will have a lot of meaning for me in 2011...both for the space in my life as well as the four walls that I live within.

It snowed again here in NYC today. I saw this pristine sidewalk while out walking Willow this morning and thought it was as good a time as any to write down my word for all the world to see!

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is a fully committed partner in Los Angeles River revitalization efforts, including the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan. We are participating in several multi-purpose studies and demonstration projects within the watershed--starting at the confluence of Bell and Arroyo Calabasas Creeks in the San Fernando Valley and moving downstream to the heart of Los Angeles. We are helping create open space, wildlife habitat and an interconnected trail system.

One correction for the record. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has always considered the Los Angeles River to be a jurisdictional waterway, fully protected by the Clean Water Act. That status was not affected by the Supreme Court’s Rapanos decision. We fully support EPA’s recent decision categorizing the entire River as a "Traditional Navigable Water." EPA had authority to make a comprehensive evaluation of the watershed, while the Corps reviewed a four mile segment relevant to a specific permit application. During the two years between EPA’s decision to evaluate the navigable waterway status of the L.A. River and its ruling, 96% of the Corps’ determinations in the watershed found the section under review had full CWA protection!

As a fully committed partner in river revitalization, we proudly participated in Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's L.A. River Day of Service. - Col. Mark Toy, District Commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District.

On Rescuer's Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the personnel of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, congratulated them on their professional holiday, and awarded state honors.

He emphasized that today is the professional holiday of all those whose job and calling is to save lives.

"Whatever happens, the SES of Ukraine is always there to help, and always promptly. They remain fully committed to their most important mission: saving lives," said the President.

The President inspected samples of automotive and robotic equipment. In particular, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and SES Head Andriy Danyk reported on the use of surface drones and robotic systems for mine disposal.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukrainian rescuers have responded to over 170,000 shelling occasions and extinguished more than 20,000 fires. SES sappers have neutralized over half a million explosive devices.

As a result of Russian aggression, 97 SES personnel have been killed, 395 injured, and 4 are currently held in Russian captivity.

The attendees observed a minute of silence to honor all those Ukraine has lost due to the war.

The President presented the Order of the Golden Star to the family of the fallen Hero of Ukraine, Lieutenant Colonel of the Civil Protection Service Artem Kostyria. The Lieutenant Colonel participated in over 70 operations to mitigate the consequences of Russian attacks. After the liberation of the Kharkiv region, he organized the restoration of nearly 100 damaged fire and rescue units. Thanks to his efforts, over 2,400 people were evacuated. Artem Kostyria was killed on July 13 this year while responding to the aftermath of an enemy missile strike when Russian forces launched a second ballistic missile attack.

The President also awarded SES employees the Orders "For Courage", II and III class, and the Order of Danylo Halytskyi.

Additionally, in Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s presence, the winners of the nationwide "Hero – Rescuer of the Year" campaign were honored. Eight Ukrainians received awards:

Oleh Holubchenko, a maxillofacial surgeon from the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital. On July 8 of this year, during a Russian missile strike, he was performing surgery. Medical equipment failed, but he found alternative ways to maintain breathing and carried the child to shelter. Despite his injuries, he assisted rescuers and volunteers in clearing the hospital’s rubble.

Artem Makarov, a cadet at Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs. In April of this year, he saved an eight-year-old boy whom his own mother tried to drown.

Andriy Bibik, a police officer in the Novopillia community. In one of the villages, he noticed thick smoke near the houses. An outbuilding was on fire, and the flames were spreading toward homes. Andriy rescued a 13-year-old girl, an infant, and two dogs.

Yuliia Oholikhina, a personnel specialist at the SES in the Zaporizhzhia region. While on vacation, she saw a child drowning in a pool. She pulled the girl out of the water and provided first aid.

Andriy Lubenets, a Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman. Severely wounded in the war, last September, near a pond, he heard a 17-year-old boy’s cry for help. Despite his injured leg, Andriy swam to the boy and pushed him 20 meters to safety with one arm. Patrol police officers helped pull the boy out of the water and resuscitate him.

Ihor Kalashnyk, an electrician at a construction hypermarket. In May of this year, after Russian aerial bombs hit the hypermarket, he fully shut down the power to the building and helped evacuate four visitors from a smoke-filled area. He also removed generator barrels with fuel from the premises to prevent another explosion.

Polina Sholokh, a SES signaller. While at a car wash, she heard a woman screaming. Next to her was a boy with no signs of life, who had been pulled out of a drainage pit. Polina immediately began CPR, and after several minutes, the boy was breathing again.

Oleksandr Zhuk, a physical education teacher. Near a lake, he heard cries for help and saw three girls in the water. One had already lost consciousness and was pulling another down. Oleksandr rescued two of the girls from the water, while the third made it to the shore on her own.

Rainy Sunday and finally a day off after a crazy week!

I actually got a lot of dolly organization time last night! My nine year old son participated in a Lip Sync show for his school with 3 other friends. They had a blast and we let him have a sleepover last night with the 3 boys. Not a lot of sleeping took place, the night was filled with giggles, flashlight tag, trying to catch the attention of girls next door, too much sugar and staying up all night. My favorite line in the am was, "we had so much fun we forgot to play video games".

I sat quietly in my office organizing doll clothes and laughing at their conversations all night. It is great to know that life does slow down for kids every once in awhile in this over scheduled and over committed lives that seem to be stealing kids childhoods.

The international commercial trade is changing, and the dangers are everywhere. Due to the different countries and regions where the two parties are involved in international trade, and a number of procedures of the sale, transportation, insurance and payment of goods, the mutual influence and restraint of the two parties are weak, it is not easy to be detected when fraudsters implement frauds. After the fraud is committed, it is often difficult for the victim to obtain compensation and the victim is easy to escape the legal sanctions.

Our international trade fraud risk business survey solution is centered in China and helps multinational companies in different countries conduct business survey services for different industries and different needs, effectively identify international trade contract fraud risks, and provide customers with accurate background checks, credits investigate services and risk solutions of preventing fraud, helping customers gain insights at all time and make wise planning decisions. this one wasn't quite a real toss, more of mild shake in my hand before tossing it (i was still trying to get the timing down). i cropped it down since the monitor didn't take up much space with the minimal amount of movement.
