Police are searching for a bicycle-riding purse snatcher who committed two crimes within fifteen minutes last night in and near downtown Palo Alto. There were no injuries and the suspect remains at large.
On Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at about 6:54 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a 9-1-1 call reporting that a suspect had just stolen a woman's purse in the 400 block of University Avenue. The victim, a woman in her sixties, had been dining at an outdoor sidewalk table of a restaurant. She had placed her purse under the table. The suspect walked up and said, "Excuse me." He reached down, grabbed her purse, and ran eastbound on University Avenue before getting onto a dark-colored bicycle. The victim called out for help, and a passerby gave chase on foot. The passerby last saw the suspect riding eastbound on Lytton Avenue from Cowper Street. The victim was not injured.
At about 7:32 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call reporting a strong-arm robbery attempt that had occurred around 6:45 p.m. at a bus stop on Quarry Road near Palo Road. The victim, a woman in her sixties, was standing at the bus stop when the suspect approached her on a bicycle. He tried to take her purse off her shoulder as he rode by, but the victim held onto the purse. They both struggled over the purse for a brief moment, but the victim was able to keep it. The suspect rode away westbound on Quarry Road, and was last seen heading south towards Palm Drive on either Sweet Olive Way or Arboretum Road. The victim was not injured, and returned home to call police.
Despite an extensive area search after both crimes, officers could not find the suspect.
The victims provided similar descriptions of the suspect. They described him as a male (described as possibly white, Hispanic, or Asian) in his late teens or early twenties, between 6 feet and 6 feet 3 inches tall, with a thin build. They said he was clean-shaven. He was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans, and may have been wearing a white hat. They said his bicycle was dark in color, and may have had whitewall tires. Police released the above sketch of the suspect on Tuesday, February 4, 2014.
Detectives are actively investigating these incidents, and do not believe there is any connection to the home-invasion armed robbery that occurred near downtown on January 23. No crimes committed by a similarly-described suspect have occurred recently in Palo Alto. The most recent unsolved purse-snatch case occurred on the afternoon of September 28, 2013, in the 500 block of Middlefield Road.
Detectives do not know if the suspect intentionally targeted these victims due to their age, or if he targeted them due to the circumstances and opportunities unique to each case.
Police recommend that you remain aware of your surroundings at all times, and we ask that you report suspicious behavior immediately via 9-1-1. Purses should be worn close to the body, with a firm grip kept on them, to dissuade would-be robbers. We have an abundance of other personal safety tips available on our website at www.cityofpaloalto.org/StopCrime.
Anyone with information about either of these crimes is asked to call our 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413. Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent via text message or voice mail to 650-383-8984.

“The Saturn V is the ideal icon to represent a big dream. This rocket was designed and built as a collaboration of nearly half-a-million people and allowed our human species to venture beyond our world and stand on ANOTHER - SURELY one of the biggest dreams of all time. ENABLING THE DREAMS of young people to touch this mighty rocket sends a powerful message in conjunction with creating an educational curriculum to engage students to embrace the power of learning through many important subjects”

Chris Kelly (Dudley South) (Con):
Jihadi crimes committed in the name of the Islamic State are completely incompatible with the British way of life, so I welcome the plans announced by my right hon. Friend to seize British passports from dual nationals, and to remove rights of residency in the UK from foreign nationals known to have been fighting with ISIL in Iraq and Syria, in order to keep such people from committing terrorist atrocities in the UK. What progress have the Government made concerning jihadis with only British citizenship, whom my constituents believe have forfeited their right to return to the UK, even though they may be rendered stateless if deprived of citizenship?
The Prime Minister:
First, I pay tribute to my hon. Friend for his great work representing the people of Dudley South for the past four years and all the work he has done. He is absolutely right that people in Dudley South—indeed, people across our country—take the basic view that if someone leaves this country, travels to the heart of Iraq, declares they are in favour of some so-called Islamic state, and that is the country they want to be part of, they should effectively forfeit their right to come back and live in Britain. That is what people feel, and they feel it deeply, which is why it is right to consider how we can have legal powers not just to strip dual nationals of their British citizenship or to exclude foreign nationals, but to prevent British citizens who make those statements from coming back to our country.

I'm still committed to these bar-ends mounted as they are. They're there for a variation in hand position, not for aero-bar wanna-be's. They work very well. I've done this to several of my machines. It works for giving your hands a rest or a variable hold when climbing or descending inclines. Super simple and elegant.
When was the last time you went out to a Chicago nightclub and heard strictly the best hip hop music, you know, that buttery, sexy, bouncy, make -you-want-to dance hip hop?
Don’t worry, I’ll wait….
I know, great hip hop nights in Chicago are growing in scarcity, and we are committed to doing something about it.
That’s why we brought out none other than Slum Village’s DJ Dez to the Funky Buddha to play a set of nothing but hip hop classics all night, the kind of ish that all hip hop fans love.

For 37 years the Ronald McDonald House has been committed to helping families of children who are in need of more than medicine and treatments. Providing a stable environment during hospital visits and treatments, gives children and their parents a loving approach to healing. Our family learned the value of RMH personally, July 10, 2009. My niece, Libby Claire not even two years of age, took a very bad fall while on vacation. If you would like to read the story, Caringbridge holds it all.

go to the journal and read oldest to newest. One thing I remember from that time is the call, saying Libby may not make it. Over time I am happy to say Libby has bloomed into quite a beautiful girl. During the battle, RMH opened their doors, hearts, and love to her parents and siblings. They were able to be with Libby through it all. I will never be able to tell you what a blessing that was. RMH will always remain precious to our family, and during the recent opening of the new Charlotte, NC RMH Libby was even asked to be a spokes model Shes appeared on billboards and a variety of advertisements.
It is by far an honor to give back to RMH in any method we can. If you have ever had the need for RMH, you too will know they are there when you need them. No questions asked. That is why I would like to take this opportunity to give back. No child should have to battle any illness or treatment alone. That hug, touch or smile from family is healing too!

Catholic Relief Services has committed more than $1.5 million in private funds to continue its emergency response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The number of deaths and people infected with the virus continues to increase rapidly. CRS and its Caritas partner have been working to train more than 400 volunteers on key messages about Ebola as well as psychosocial counseling for those who’ve lost loved ones to the disease. Education is the only way to stop the spread of the disease, so CRS has been working on public awareness campaigns aimed at teaching the population about Ebola, including its spread and prevention.
CRS provided funding to help rehabilitate this graveyard in Freetown, Sierra Leone. As the Ebola outbreak continues to escalate at an alarming rate, safe and dignified burials have become more difficult.

I made a commitment to my youngest son to decorate his room and have it done before he comes home from school for Christmas. I used to love decorating, but over recent years, i have to be honest and found it a chore, its boring and makes you dirty and ache and his room is large, so the task was very daunting.
A promise is a promise though.
So back from Bootcamp, i loaded up onto itunes an audio book to entertain me whilst i worked, it was a freebie so not really my choice -Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert.
I had read Eat Love Pray , her previous book and loved it so much that as soon as the movie came out i had to see it on the first day. Howevere this book had not really appealed to me at all, not sure why, because the reason i loved the first one so much was, i could relate to so many of the authors experiences emotions and views.
Well yet again I find that it is true that sometimes things you need hunt you down of themselves. The book had me captivated, I found myself relating to so much in it , my feelings and experience of divorce, why the next relationship I had did nothing to nurture me so of course failed and left me so empty. Why i have been happy to be single since enabling me to truly love and know myself, and actually love being single, yet know that i will be just as happy happy if I stay single or if i do find myself in a fulfilling relationship.
The day disappeared, the decorating seemed like a dream, i didn't really even notice i was doing it. I have not finished listening to the book yet, but i will tomorrow when I finish the decorating, and you know what i am actually looking forward to it.

A restored example of village stocks this is on a small area of grass in the village of Sandon, Staffordshire, England. They are leg stocks which were used in the middle ages as a punishment for villagers who had committed minor misdemeanours such as indebtedness, petty pilfering, gossiping, etc. As well as exposing a miscreant to the humiliation of being publicly identified, it also provided the opportunity for other villagers to pelt the poor unfortunate with rotten fruit and veg. Explore changed again today and committed a minor masacre among my explored photos. I used to have 16-19 photos in explore. Now I have just 9 of them left. But got back an old favorite which had dropped out of explore and one new photo from september appeared for the first time. Most of my pictures that have been in commenting groups dropped out of explore despite of the activity in the commenting groups beiing only a small to insignifant part of the total activity of those photos.
The older explore calender pages now look quite different too than they did before.

Rik Poot (1924 Vilvoorde - 2006 Jette ) is a strongly socially committed Flemish artist. In the initial period, his work was more abstract. Later on, he used a more figurative art form, within classical modernism. Essential to Rik Poot's formal language are the hollow spaces between the bronze parts from which his sculptures are constructed. By creating these openings, his monumental sculptures simultaneously acquire something light and a certain fragility. This gives his works a powerful and expressive rhythm. He was a great advocate of craftsmanship. He stated: "Without craftsmanship you cannot make art. An artist is a craftsman."

I finally committed and bought my registration and a T-shirt. Work says they'll let me get my Lego on somehow, so I will be doing a short week!
Looks like I will be driving so I can bring more than one or two mobile suits and whatnot.
As of right now, I still need to either make hotel arrangements or contact some of my Seattle buddies to see if I can sofa crash. If anybody wants to room up for the weekend, I'd be happy to split the tab...separate beds, though.

Hundreds of protesters rallied near Brayton Point Power Plant and called upon Governor Deval Patrick to close the electricity-generating power plant in Somerset. 44 of the participants committed non-violent civil disobedience and were arrested for trespassing on the plant’s grounds. The plant is one of the largest electricity generating plants in New England, using a combination of low-sulfur coal, natural gas, or oil and diesel fuel to generate 1,528 megawatts of electricity. Demonstrators asserted that in 2010, the plant emitted 6 million of tons of carbon dioxide, making it one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases in all of New England and that annually the plant emits 15,000 pounds of mercury, arsenic, lead, and other hazardous air pollutants into the air. Participants called on Governor Patrick to shut down the plant as soon as possible, while guaranteeing the plant workers and community a just transition.

Pearl Hart (born Pearl Taylor; Nov. 13, 1876 – Dec. 30th, 1955) was a Canadian-born outlaw of the American Old West. She committed one of the last recorded stagecoach robberies in the United States, and her crime gained notoriety primarily because of her gender. Many details of Hart's life are uncertain, with available reports being varied and often contradictory.
Hart stood 5-feet-2 and weighed about 110 pounds. Some stories said she was a camp cook or ran a boarding house. Others claimed she was a morphine and opium addict.
Folk Figure, Old West Outlaw. Eloping at the age of 17 to a gambler named Hart, Pearl was on the fast track to outlaw fame. Born in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada. brought up in a respectable middle-class family and received a good education. Pearl would leave her abusive husband numerous times only to reconcile and return and it the midst of all this give birth to two children, Little Joe and Emma. In 1893, the couple traveled to the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, here he worked as a sideshow barker and she found odd jobs. While in Illinois she became enthralled with the Wild West shows and was especially fascinated by Annie Oakley, who she saw performing. Inspired by seeing strong women and fascinated by the heroes and legends of the Wild West, she soon mustered the courage to leave her shiftless husband and boarded a train to Trinidad, Colorado. There, she became a popular saloon singer. Pearl was disappointed in the "West” not finding the glamour and heroes she had been so enamored with, instead working as a cook in a café and taking in laundry to supplement her income. She ran into her ex, Frank, while living in Phoenix and he persuaded her to move to Tucson with him. They lived well for a brief period but once the money ran out, he became abusive again. Frank ended up enlisting in the military service during the Spanish-American War, leaving Pearl alone. By 1899; she had hooked up with a miner named Joe Boot. When she received a letter from her brother that her mother was ill and needed money for medical bills. By May of that same year, the two of them decided to rob the Globe to Florence stagecoach near the settlement of Troy and Kane Springs Canyon. Pearl cut her hair, dressed in men’s clothing, and was armed with a .38 revolver. Boot held a gun on the victims while Pearl stole two firearms and money. They gave each passenger a $1.00 for food, took the driver’s gun and fled south towards Benson. They worked their way up the San Pedro River hoping to get far away from the crime. The stagecoach driver unhitched a horse, road to town and alerted the sheriff, W. E. “Bill” Truman. Taken to the Globe jail, Hart played up her part as a lady bandit, giving autographs and entertaining those who just wanted to get a glimpse of the "Bandit Queen.” A few weeks after her capture, Pearl escaped from the jail on October 12, 1899, with another prisoner by the name of Ed Hogan. As the posse quickly pursued the pair, Pearl's legend began to grow throughout the west. But her freedom would be short as the law soon found her and returned her to the jail. She and Boot came to trial for robbing the stagecoach passengers in October 1899. During the trial, Hart made an impassioned plea to the jury, claiming she needed the money to be able to go to her ailing mother. Judge Fletcher M. Doan was shocked and angered by the jury's not guilty finding and scolded the members for failure to perform their duties.[14] Immediately following the acquittal, the pair were rearrested on the charge of tampering with U.S. mails. The pair were convicted during their second trial, Boot receiving a sentence of thirty years and Hart a sentence of five years. Both were sent to Yuma Territorial Prison to serve their sentences. Pearl became even bigger of a celebrity while she was in prison and the warden, who liked the attention, accommodated her with a larger than usual cell as well as a few other perks. While there her legend grew as she "entertained” visitors and reporters, often posing for pictures. After just 18 months in prison, she was paroled on December 19, 1902 and moved to Kansas City. In 1904, while running a cigar store, she was arrested for receiving stolen property. She was declared innocent of the charge. There are claims that she lived a private life with her husband of 50 years, George Calvin “Cal” Bywater. She is acknowledged as the only known female stagecoach robber in Arizona’s history earning her the nicknames of “Bandit Queen” or “Lady Bandit”.
Some relatively modern photos of Exchange Square taken in 2002. I was still committed to slide film at that time.
