The EBRD is committed to supporting the Green Energy Transition in its countries of operations. As more variable renewable energy sources are incorporated into the generation mix, new solutions are needed to ensure the stability of the electricity grid and the provision of reliable, high quality electricity supply. Additionally, the rise of distributed, consumer-led energy generation models may increase demand for solutions that decrease end users’ reliance on a centralized grid. Energy storage is likely to play a key role in providing such solutions to grid operators, generators and consumers alike.

This event brought together stakeholders from the private, public and financial sector to discuss the future of energy storage and its role in creating resilient, green economies. The panel explored the potential disruptive effect of storage on the energy industry, and how businesses and governments can contribute to and benefit from investment in energy storage solutions.

Catholic Relief Services has committed more than $1.5 million in private funds to continue its emergency response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The number of deaths and people infected with the virus continues to increase rapidly. CRS and its Caritas partner have been working to train more than 400 volunteers on key messages about Ebola as well as psychosocial counseling for those who’ve lost loved ones to the disease. Education is the only way to stop the spread of the disease, so CRS has been working on public awareness campaigns aimed at teaching the population about Ebola, including its spread and prevention.

As schools are closed due to the Ebola outbreak, many students are looking for employment. This call center is filled with young people who want to get involved in stopped Ebola. It is using innovative technology to identify the cases and follow-up appropriately.

Ardmac committed to improving environmental performance

Ardmac recently added a number of new Ford vans to their fleet. The vehicles were selected for their EcoBoost technology, which greater fuel efficiency, providing lower carbon emissions than previous models. The new vehicles will support site activities across the business as Ardmac continue to serve their clients from the pharmaceutical, micro-electronics, commercial and retail sectors whilst reducing their environmental impact.

Roy Millar, Group Business Director said “As our vans had aged, we explored options for new vehicles. We have purchased these Ford Transit and Ford Connect vans in an effort to reduce costs and our environmental impact. A commitment to improving environmental performance is at the forefront of Ardmac’s corporate responsibility policy, thus the purchase of more energy efficient vans was an easy decision for us.”

For those people who committed a criminal act, be it shoplifting, breaking and entering, etc, THIS is one place that they would have seen the inside of...the charge office at Rice Lane nick.

Indeed, the place would have echoed with the sound of earthy language from both prisoner and officer alike...especially the phrase "turn yer pockets out!"

Unlike the city that gave us the first computer and Belle Vue (I'm talking about Manchester of course) Liverpool doesn't HAVE a police museum and this would be the perfect place for it (either that or Westminster Road) but I think that Copperas Hill would be the ideal venue because, unlike Rice Lane, it has somewhere to park the odd old police vehicle or two.

Nobody may like the police on Merseyside (or perhaps that's a generalisation) but policing has just as big a part to play in our local history as education and public health.

Anyway, this is a close up of entrance to something that no-one wanted to see the inside of...the charge office.

Locally committed (cont'd) -- Council Plan 2017/18 half-year performance report (December 2017) -- Coventry City Council

On Rescuer's Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the personnel of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, congratulated them on their professional holiday, and awarded state honors.

He emphasized that today is the professional holiday of all those whose job and calling is to save lives.

"Whatever happens, the SES of Ukraine is always there to help, and always promptly. They remain fully committed to their most important mission: saving lives," said the President.

The President inspected samples of automotive and robotic equipment. In particular, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and SES Head Andriy Danyk reported on the use of surface drones and robotic systems for mine disposal.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukrainian rescuers have responded to over 170,000 shelling occasions and extinguished more than 20,000 fires. SES sappers have neutralized over half a million explosive devices.

As a result of Russian aggression, 97 SES personnel have been killed, 395 injured, and 4 are currently held in Russian captivity.

The attendees observed a minute of silence to honor all those Ukraine has lost due to the war.

The President presented the Order of the Golden Star to the family of the fallen Hero of Ukraine, Lieutenant Colonel of the Civil Protection Service Artem Kostyria. The Lieutenant Colonel participated in over 70 operations to mitigate the consequences of Russian attacks. After the liberation of the Kharkiv region, he organized the restoration of nearly 100 damaged fire and rescue units. Thanks to his efforts, over 2,400 people were evacuated. Artem Kostyria was killed on July 13 this year while responding to the aftermath of an enemy missile strike when Russian forces launched a second ballistic missile attack.

The President also awarded SES employees the Orders "For Courage", II and III class, and the Order of Danylo Halytskyi.

Additionally, in Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s presence, the winners of the nationwide "Hero – Rescuer of the Year" campaign were honored. Eight Ukrainians received awards:

Oleh Holubchenko, a maxillofacial surgeon from the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital. On July 8 of this year, during a Russian missile strike, he was performing surgery. Medical equipment failed, but he found alternative ways to maintain breathing and carried the child to shelter. Despite his injuries, he assisted rescuers and volunteers in clearing the hospital’s rubble.

Artem Makarov, a cadet at Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs. In April of this year, he saved an eight-year-old boy whom his own mother tried to drown.

Andriy Bibik, a police officer in the Novopillia community. In one of the villages, he noticed thick smoke near the houses. An outbuilding was on fire, and the flames were spreading toward homes. Andriy rescued a 13-year-old girl, an infant, and two dogs.

Yuliia Oholikhina, a personnel specialist at the SES in the Zaporizhzhia region. While on vacation, she saw a child drowning in a pool. She pulled the girl out of the water and provided first aid.

Andriy Lubenets, a Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman. Severely wounded in the war, last September, near a pond, he heard a 17-year-old boy’s cry for help. Despite his injured leg, Andriy swam to the boy and pushed him 20 meters to safety with one arm. Patrol police officers helped pull the boy out of the water and resuscitate him.

Ihor Kalashnyk, an electrician at a construction hypermarket. In May of this year, after Russian aerial bombs hit the hypermarket, he fully shut down the power to the building and helped evacuate four visitors from a smoke-filled area. He also removed generator barrels with fuel from the premises to prevent another explosion.

Polina Sholokh, a SES signaller. While at a car wash, she heard a woman screaming. Next to her was a boy with no signs of life, who had been pulled out of a drainage pit. Polina immediately began CPR, and after several minutes, the boy was breathing again.

Oleksandr Zhuk, a physical education teacher. Near a lake, he heard cries for help and saw three girls in the water. One had already lost consciousness and was pulling another down. Oleksandr rescued two of the girls from the water, while the third made it to the shore on her own.

The Niihau Incident

This is one display of many of the Niihau Incident in the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum about the Niihau Incident, low resolution picture is attached.

For many years I have been aware of the WWII Niihau Incident (a special Hawaiian Island), quoted from Wikipedia and this URL: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niihau_incident

The Japanese pilot then sought and received the assistance of the three residents of Japanese descent on the island in overcoming his captors, finding weapons, and taking several hostages. Eventually, Nishikaichi was killed by Niihauans Benehakaka "Ben" Kanahele and his wife Kealoha "Ella" Kanahele;[1] Ben Kanahele was wounded in the process, and one of Nishikaichi's supporters, Yoshio Harada, committed suicide.

One of the first Canadian women who enlisted into the Royal Canadian Air Force committed suicide less than a year later.

miniHazelTen days after her 29th birthday, Hazel Winnifred Webb Seymour left a steady job with the Bell Telephone Company of Canada to enlist in the Canadian Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. The unit operated under the motto: “we serve that men may fly.”

Ten months later, she swallowed three bottles of cleansers (iodine, cresol and carbolic acid) while in the hospital for hysteria. She died on September 10, 1942.

When she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), Webb Seymour seemed like the perfect candidate. She was healthy, high-school educated, the right age and height, and well-trained in administrative duties. She was married, and had been for seven years, but the couple had no children as he was deployed overseas.

Her early days in the Air Force reinforced her aptitude for the job. One test resulted in the comment:

“One of the best on the course – always cheerful and will make a wonderfully reliable and good N.C.O. Suitable for a difficult station.”

An “assessment of character” completed in March 1942 also contained high praise: “industrious, capable, willing worker,” “highly resourceful,” and “merits accelerated promotion.”

Four months later, Seymour was admitted to the Station Hospital with something so serious, she stayed for eight days. From then on, she went in and out of hospitals, both civilian and military, until her suicide.

During an inquest about her death, Flight Lieutenant Allan Campbell Blair described what happened in the final three days of her life.

“It was considered that before she should be discharged on the grounds of this nervous disorder that it would be worthwhile to give her another chance and to this end was admitted to Station Hospital again to be kept under observation and the be employed doing small jobs about the hospital which was thought might be of benefit to her. She was apparently responding and there was, in my opinion, no need to restrict her freedom about the hospital. There was no evidence or intentions from her that she was planning self destruction. On September 10, at 1205 hours as Dr. Williams and myself were leaving the hospital we encountered her in the hall holding an iodine soaked stained towel to her mouth and she stated that she had just drunk three bottles of poison….”[1]

After she died, her mother wrote to the military needing help.

“The funeral refund has not been sent to me and I really need that amount to help with my winters’ coal, if I can get any.”[2]

Despite those pleas, the only cheque to the family reimbursed $154.16 they paid for Webb Seymour’s funeral.

Chitaurgarh (Urdu: چِتوڑگڑھ‎), (Hindi: चित्तौड़गढ़) pronunciation (help·info)} (also Chittor, Chittaur, or Chitorgarh) is a city and a municipality in Rajasthan state of western India. It lies on the Berach River, a tributary of the Banas, and is the administrative headquarters of Chittorgharh District and a former capital of the Sisodia clans of Rajputs of Mewar. The city of Chittaurgarh is located on the banks of river Gambhiri and Berach. The district was bifurcated and a new district namely Pratap Garh was created with certain portion taken from Udaipur district in the newly created district of Pratap Garh.

Fiercely independent, the fort of Chittor was under siege thrice and each time they fought bravely and thrice Jauhar was committed by the ladies and children, first led by Rani Padmini, and later by Rani Karnavati. The famous warriors Gora and Badal, in the war against Allaudin Khalji (1303 AD), have become legendary. The sacrifice of Jaimal and Phata in the war against the Mughals (1568 AD) was so great that the Mughal Emperor Akbar installed their statues in the fort of Agra. It has also been land of worship for Meera.[1] Chittorgarh is home to the Chittorgarh Fort, the largest fort in Asia.

I loved going around capturing the lifes and times of Chittor.

July 28, 2013. Somerset, MA.

Hundreds of protesters rallied near Brayton Point Power Plant and called upon Governor Deval Patrick to close the electricity-generating power plant in Somerset. 44 of the participants committed non-violent civil disobedience and were arrested for trespassing on the plant’s grounds. The plant is one of the largest electricity generating plants in New England, using a combination of low-sulfur coal, natural gas, or oil and diesel fuel to generate 1,528 megawatts of electricity. Demonstrators asserted that in 2010, the plant emitted 6 million of tons of carbon dioxide, making it one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases in all of New England and that annually the plant emits 15,000 pounds of mercury, arsenic, lead, and other hazardous air pollutants into the air. Participants called on Governor Patrick to shut down the plant as soon as possible, while guaranteeing the plant workers and community a just transition.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is a fully committed partner in Los Angeles River revitalization efforts, including the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan. We are participating in several multi-purpose studies and demonstration projects within the watershed--starting at the confluence of Bell and Arroyo Calabasas Creeks in the San Fernando Valley and moving downstream to the heart of Los Angeles. We are helping create open space, wildlife habitat and an interconnected trail system.

One correction for the record. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has always considered the Los Angeles River to be a jurisdictional waterway, fully protected by the Clean Water Act. That status was not affected by the Supreme Court’s Rapanos decision. We fully support EPA’s recent decision categorizing the entire River as a "Traditional Navigable Water." EPA had authority to make a comprehensive evaluation of the watershed, while the Corps reviewed a four mile segment relevant to a specific permit application. During the two years between EPA’s decision to evaluate the navigable waterway status of the L.A. River and its ruling, 96% of the Corps’ determinations in the watershed found the section under review had full CWA protection!

As a fully committed partner in river revitalization, we proudly participated in Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's L.A. River Day of Service. - Col. Mark Toy, District Commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District.

At a time of tremendous turmoil and progressive opportunity, we invite you to participate in a historic convening of organizations and individuals committed to social, racial and economic justice. On June 17-19, in Chicago, after the party primary season and before the party conventions, we seek to bring together activists committed to a different kind of agenda: a People’s Agenda that can enhance and expand issue campaigns and hold all elected officials accountable to popular demands for justice, equality and freedom. We envision this Summit as further deepening the relationship between participating organizations rooted in principled anti-corporate politics, development of community leaders, direct action not based on partisan identification, and strategic organizing to build power. The Summit itself will include plenary and workshop sessions devoted to key issues such as the Fight for 15, mass incarceration and criminal justice reform, voting rights and expanding democratic participation, a tax on Wall Street speculation to fund human needs and jobs, climate justice toward a sustainable economy, improved Medicare for All, the fight for free and debt-free higher education, secure retirement through expanding social security, ending HIV/AIDS, achieving Constitutional pay equity for women, and ending deportations and support for DREAMers, among others. We take action in Chicago against the big money system of politics that expands the power of the wealthy and corporations at the expense of the people. We also celebrate with music and a “festival of joyous rebellion.” And we plan how to move our People’s Agenda nationally and locally to help build the broad movement for people and the planet. — June 17-19, 2016, McCormick Place, Chicago #pplsummit

They are the type of professors that almost all students except the most committed are completely intimidated by ~ oh wait, *especially* the most committed are intimidated by them, because we realize how totally incredible these two individuals are; they work you to the bone and then push you to keep going even when you're scraped raw and breathless.

But at the end of all of that, when you see that look on their faces :: pointing :: it is absolutely one of the most rewarding things in the entire world.

They leave no Student unchanged, no mental door un-knocked. They challenge, they terrify, and they inspire. And if it weren't for these two people, I would never have felt so pushed to apply to a ton of UC's ... and in fact, it was their guidance and support that helped me develop as a student to the point where I raised my GPA almost a whole grade point, pulled straight A's for over six semesters running, and was accepted into every single university I applied to for transfer.

Thank you Paula.

Thank you Ted.
