Sunday night we went to see our lovely and so talented friends Smooth Operator playing in Hedon.
We went for delicious food at the Camerton pub beforehand and even managed dessert before heading to see the gig.
Helen (the singer in Smooth Operator) even borrowed my Orinoco womble to wear while she was singing Wombling Merry Christmas, ha ha!
NOTE: The comments that follow will be added to all of the photos from this 12/26/2014 excursion to Liberty State Park, for everything you see is connected to the overall message in one way or another.
Having done a very early morning start at Liberty State Park on Christmas day of 2013, while thoroughly enjoying the awe inspiring experience along the waterfront walkway with one of the world’s greatest urban landscapes (and waterscape) in and around the New York Harbor, I decided to do the same again this year; however, given some prior obligations, it was the day after Christmas, instead. Like the previous year, nary a soul besides me was out before sunrise, and it was not until about an hour after the sun first appeared that a group of visitors emerged. So, I basically had the entire waterfront park to myself for a pretty good stretch of time.
If you have never been there, it really is a sight to behold when one can see the majesty of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island with its unique place in American history, and the recently completed Freedom Tower, standing above all as the new proud symbol of what every person aspires to possess . . . FREEDOM. It took my wife and me quite a few years after the infamous, heart wrenching event of the fallen Twin Towers, simply known as “9-11.” If you go to our FLICKR albums, you will see the mid to latter construction stage of the Freedom Tower in photos under New York Skylines or the Meadowlands landscapes and such.
Initially, we both felt that nothing could ever replace or exude the same powerful presence as the original Twin Towers, and felt disappointment in the design of the Freedom Tower as it began to evolve from ground up, but when it reached its latter stages and the way the natural light over the course of any given day would play a significant role in its image, an overwhelming sense of admiration for the concept began to grow, and when finally completed, it all seemed to be a perfect visual symbol to the new landscape of New York Harbor. As we used to feel driving to the City or passing by from the New Jersey side, a similar kind of pride is felt with this new, great landmark that has made such a significant impact on the psyche of our citizens.
Many of you have likely stopped reading this long narrative, but you can probably surmise that aforementioned pride in these comments. Having personally seen the falling of the Twin Towers from work three miles away on that horrific weekday morning with all the confused and maddening reports being broadcasted on the radio and television news, it becomes an experience that is, indelibly, forever etched in my mind . . . So, that day is always present whenever I look toward the southern anchor of the Manhattan skyline, and I absolutely love how the Freedom Tower has not replaced, but serves as a natural extension of the Twin Towers and honors those who have lost their lives, accordingly.
Looking farther north offers the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building, the two iconic skyscrapers that ruled the architectural world of construction beyond imagination in the early 1930’s. And the Goldman-Sachs Tower of Jersey City, on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River, can hold its own amongst the giants of the NY Harbor landmarks. The captivating style of this particular modern design somehow compliments the glorious Manhattan skyline—practically blending in as part of a grand visual sweep from one side of the harbor to the other. And furthermore, the famous Brooklyn Bridge can be seen in the distance between the southern end of Manhattan and the borough of Brooklyn, and to the far south, the Verrazano Bridge dominates the entry way to the great harbor that saw thousands upon thousands of aspiring immigrants who traveled the vast Atlantic Ocean, ultimately arriving in America, while taking their first step on our soil at Ellis Island, under the protective presence of Lady Liberty.
One historic reminder after another permeates the air, causing just about everyone to feel something truly special. Even if visitors know little of the history here, it is nearly impossible not to be awe struck.
In closing, the two extreme ends of the waterfront park, the northern point and the South Lawn, offer monuments that are so powerful and captivating. I am always taken by the Liberation Monument, which honors all of those who served our nation in the fight for freedom. If any of you ever have the chance to visit LSP, please do take some time to genuinely appreciate this statue from all angles, for it almost comes to life. The northern end of the park has the “New Jersey EMPTY SKY 9-11 Memorial,” which must be seen. A surge of emotions will flood through your body as you stand at the site and gaze across to the East where the Twins once stood.
Anyhow, I hope that this passage would serve as a motivating factor to visit Liberty State Park, if possible. Regardless of the degree of personal meaning this may have, it is still a landscape that is well worth the trip . . . Nothing like it in the world.

'Blue Hour' in "Taman Seri Empangan", Putrajaya, Malaysia. 28th May 2013. Planning to capture the sunset and golden hour but arriving late at location because of company event, I could only captured the this beautiful blue hour as the sunset are fading away.

- Onderweg naar de Bilstein. Na een weg door het bos doemt plots de Bilstein op. Langs deze rotsformatie die boven de buurt uitsteekt staat deze merkwaardige constructie. Een kale stam van een spar is tegen de rots opgesteld. Aan de top van de stam is een kleine spar bevestigd. Dit zou het werk zijn van studenten van de TU Darmstadt (Technische Universität), afdeling bouwkundig ingenieur en geodesie. Die zakken jaarlijks af naar Breungeshain voor de jaarlijkse weerkerende Hauptvermessungsübung (HVÜ) (hoofd-metings-oefening). Na hun studie aan de TU Darmstadt komen deze toekomstige landmeters en geodeten (die Eckenschisser ofte hoeken schieters in het Nederlands) hier in Breungeshain de theorie in de praktijk omzetten. Destijds zouden ze deze constructie hier geplaatst hebben om tijdens hun geodetische metingen een duidelijk herkenbaar punt te hebben om hun metingen uit te voeren. De gastenkamer waar ik gelogeerd was ontvangt sinds vele jaren deze studenten tijdens hun HVÜ. Zeer toevallig raakte ik met de gastvrouw over dit onderwerp aan de praat. Interessant was dat één van de professoren die de groep hier begeleidt, ter gelegenheid van de 25 jarige samenwerking met Breungeshain een bundeltje geschreven heeft over deze HVÜ. Zo vernam ik het doel of nut van deze merkwaardige boom, die dus een baken blijkt te zijn.
Hoewel ik elders hoorde dat dit een jaarlijks ritueel zou zijn van de plaatselijke jeugd, die in het voorjaar om een of andere reden deze boom opzetten. Wie heeft gelijk? Ik geloof eerder de versie van de TU, aangezien het in de bundel van een professor stond, de bijzondere constructie van de top van het baken, en dat dit baken van zeer ver in de omgeving te zien is, wat nodig is voor de metingen van deze HVÜ. Wellicht is het een combinatie van beiden.
Nog vlug een laatste blik en een laatste foto van deze mooie en interessante plek, en dan verder op weg naar de Höherodskopf.
- Auf dem Weg zum Bilstein. Nach einem Weg durch den Wald erhebt sich plötzlich dem Bilstein. Entlang dieser Felsformation, steht diese bemerkenswerte Struktur. Eine nackte Stamm einer Tanne ist am auf dem Felsen gezogen. An der Spitze des Stiels ist eine kleine Tanne. Dies soll die Arbeit sein von Studenten der TU Darmstadt (Technischer Universität), Abteilung Bauingenieurwesen und Geodäsie. Die kommen nach Breungeshain für die jährlich wiederkehrende Hauptvermessungsübung (HVU). Nach ihrem Studium an der TU Darmstadt, bringen diese zukünftigen Bauingenieure, Vermesser und Geodäten (die Eckenschisser genant) hier in Breungeshain die Theorie in die Praxis. Damals sollen sie hier während ihrer Vermessungen diese Konstruktion aufgestellt haben um einen markanten Punkt zu haben. Das Gästezimmer wo ich übernachtete hat während die HVÜ, seit vielen Jahren, die Studenten und Professoren zu Gast. Anläßlich der 25-jährigen Partnerschaft mit Breungeshain, hat einer der Gruppe begleitende Professoren, ein Bündel geschrieben über diese HVÜ. So lernte ich den Zweck diesen bemerkenswerter Baum und die Verwendung davon. Der soll eine Bake sein für die Vermessungen. Obwohl ich auch irgend gehört habe, daß es sich hier handeln soll um ein jährliches Ritual der örtlichen Jugend, die im Frühjahr aus irgendeinem Grund dieser Baum errichten. Wer hat Recht? Persönlich glaube ich ehr die Erklärung der TÜ Darmstadt und seinen Professor. Auch wegen die besondere Konstruktion des oberen Teils der Bake, und daß dieses Bake von weitem um gut zu sehen ist, was für die Messung diese HVÜ notwendig ist. Vielleicht ist es eine Kombination aus beiden.
ch eine schneller letzten Blick und ein letztes Bild von dieser schönen und interessanten Ort, und dann den weg in Richtung Hoherodskopf fortsetzen.

Late September....
Very late in the Storm Season
Apparently I didn't go through all my images thoroughly!
Enjoy these GEMs of some of night photography in 2021. Outflow dominate till it reached Kearney Nebraska. Then this storm got its severe thunderstorm warning and we actually have a small cuplet (small but you can see in this set of images. It only lasted for about 2 mins it lasted and it was night so there were not that many pics @15 intervals)
Thought it was going to produce a brief nader but it didn't. Nice structure for this late in the year and I waited til the last second to leave to get under the belly of the beast!
There might be more but likely this will be my last batch of 2021.

This is a photograph is from a set of photographs from the Castlepollard 5KM Road Race and Fun Run 2017, also known as the Tullynally Challenge, which was held in Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 16th August 2017 at 20:00. The race is hosted by North Westmeath Athletic Club. The weather was reasonably good for road racing. The participants had a very stiff breeze in their faces on the outward stretch and all the way to the 2KM mark within Tullynally. This then became a helpful tailwail for the final KM of the race.
Starting off many years ago the race was very much a local affair drawing runners from the sounding areas of Mullingar, North East Meath, Cavan, and Longford. However, the race has grown in stature and popularity over the years and is now one of the most well attended road races in the midlands and sees participants from all over Ireland. The race offers prizes in all categories. The Castlepollard 5KM Road Race attempts to support young runners and walkers by organising a range of underage races around the town square before the adult race at 20:00. Profits from the race go towards grassroots athletics in the region - North Westmeath Athletics, Schools Cross Country, and local community games. As summer moves into autumn the Castlepollard 5KM can be considered as the unofficial ending of summer evening road racing in the midlands as with the fading light of the late summer evenings comes less opportunities to hold races in the evening time. Castlepollard is a small town located in North County Westmeath amongst the lakes of Lough Lene and Lough Derravagh. One of the show pieces of the race landscape is Tullynally Castle which provides almost 2.5KM of the race route. The name Tullynally is an adaption of 'Tulaigh an Eallaigh' – the Hill of the Swan. The hill overlooks the mythical Lough Derravaragh. Irish folklore legend names the lake as where the Children of Lir, who were turned into swans, were destined to live for 300 years. Tullynally Castle is still a family home to this day.
One of the enduring symbols of the Castlepollard 5KM is the tireless work of Andy MacEoin of North Westmeath AC who has been a visitor to almost every road race in the Midlands and beyond over the past number of months to publicize the event. Many of the participants tonight will have seen Andy's strategically placed advertising signs around other road race routes. Certainly this work, and that of many other members of North Westmeath AC, has paid off well.
The race begins near the center of the town square and proceeds directly out the R395 towards Coole and Edgeworthstown. The first KM is flat and quick allowing the field to spread out. The race then enters the Tullynally Castle estate and proceeds up the tree-lined avenue. The gardens, like the castle are on a grand scale, taking in nearly 12 acres. This allows the race to make a big loop of the gardens with a quick downhill stretch followed by a sharp climb before the race rejoins it's outgoing path for the final 1.5KM of the race. The final 1100M from the gate of the Castle grounds to the finish is as the first - fast and flat and allows for a great finish passing the GAA grounds with finish line just outside the local Fire Station.
This year almost 400 took part in the race. It goes without saying that the Castlepollard 5KM has become one of the "must do" road race events in the midlands. Everything that is good about club road racing in Ireland can be found here.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

9th July 2020 update: The cost of reinstating East Princes Street Gardens after the Christmas market was more than £150,000, three times higher than previous years. It transpired Underbelly did not actually have planning permission for the 2019 market. Underbelly paid the council in full for the repairs. The council paid an additional £40,000 for improved drainage work.

Wednesday 17th June. There was widespread expectation First Minister Nicola Sturgeon would announce a move to phase two of lockdown on Thursday 18th June and give indicative dates for further easing of lockdown.
In phase two the virus is controlled but remains; R is consistently below 1 and WHO conditions are met. Physical distancing would still be required.
Phase two includes: People meeting in larger groups; workers being allowed to return to construction sites; opening playgrounds; small shops selling non-essential goods reopening (but not shopping malls); outdoor beer gardens but not indoor areas of pubs.
