The Promethea Moth (Callosamia promethea) is a large attractive Giant Silk Moth whose numbers have been declining. The above photo is of its cocoon found on a Sweatgum Tree.

Cattail Pond, Patuxent Research Refuge, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

IC 5146 is a reflection/emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus.

To be more precise, the NGC catalogue description refers to IC 5146 as an open cluster of 9.5 mag stars involved in a bright and dark nebula, from which the name "Cocoon" given to the nebula which surrounds the cluster.

Indeed this nebula is a stellar nursery where star-formation is ongoing, like observed with astronomical satellites.

On the upper side of the image is visible the blue nebula VdB 147 and several dark lanes due to the dust.

All the complex is around 2500/3000 light years far from the Earth.

The Cocoon nebula can be found 4000 light years away in the summer constellation of Cygnus the swan, among the star fields which make up our galaxys disk. The young star at the center of the nebula is the power source for the the glowing hydrogen gas, which is 15 light years across. 15 light years is not far on a universal scale, but would take us more than half a billion years to traverse with current tech. Surrounding the nebula and continuing out of frame is a large molecular dust cloud which hosted the right conditions for the central star to be created around 100,000 years ago.

Cocoon Nebula Cygnus , RGB Ha image

IC 5146 (also Caldwell 19, Sh 2-125, and the Cocoon Nebula) is a reflection/emission nebula and Caldwell object in the constellation Cygnus. The NGC description refers to IC 5146 as a cluster of 9.5 mag stars involved in a bright and dark nebula. The cluster is also known as Collinder 470. It is located near the naked-eye star Pi Cygni, the open cluster NGC 7209 in Lacerta, and the bright open cluster M39. The cluster is about 4,000 ly away, and the central star that lights it formed about 100,000 years ago; the nebula is about 12 arcmins across, which is equivalent to a span of 15 light years.

When viewing IC 5146, dark nebula Barnard 168 (B168) is an inseparable part of the experience, forming a dark lane that surrounds the cluster and projects westward forming the appearance of a trail behind the Cocoon.

I participated in special photowalk with friends of Flickr on that day. Because I enjoy photography as always in Yokohama and roared with laughter until the last of the banquet, I cannot realize that he leaves for the distant place.

On November 30, 2013 in Yokohama.

The Cocoon nebula is an emission nebula in the constellation of Cygnus. A dark nebula, Barnard 168 (B168), trails to the west from the bright pink emission nebula. This is a particularly star rich region of the Milky Way.
